Ye Pingmo (b.1932) is from Zhaixia Village, Pengzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. He joined a commune in his twenties and did farming till the Chinese Economic Reform. During the Great Famine, apart from being forced to stay in a production team, Ye went to Shaoguan City to work in a brickyard. Being paid hourly, he had barely enough food, while his father at home died of hunger. Soon afterwards, his elder son, Ye Zuyan, who was only three years old, starved to death as well. In the eighties, Ye worked in graveyards, till he could not. After that, he stayed in the village living on elderly pension and took care of his grandson.
