Ye Xinji (b. 1927) is a resident of Zhaixia Village, Pengzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. Ye recollects that during the collectivization, people farmed together and many just pretended to work, so they ran out of food. Ye and the interviewer Ye Zuyi's father often went fishing at night. He also went to Qingzhou with some other people to sell vats in return for sweet potatoes.

Ye Yaolang (b.1938) is a resident of Zhaixia Village, Pengzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. Ye learned tailoring with his father after elementary school and then taught himself painting bed boards. He went to places to paint boards to escape the Great Famine. Ye recollects that, during the Great Leap Forward, the production team planted crops on two sides of the road just to impress their leaders, and used soil to fake fertilizers. The production team also spilled too many crop seeds and gained no harvest. They put layers of sweet potato vines on the field, which did not lead to more sweet potatoes at all.

Ye Yinying (b.1933) is a resident of Zhaixia Village, Pengzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. Ye recollects that many people would hope someone would die and have a funeral, so that they could go and help to have some food in return. When Gaolang's father passed away, Ye's husband went to offer a hand, but Gaolang's mother hid all the food to save it for her children. When people helped carrying the coffin and did not get food, they would complain.

Ye Yueming (b.1938) is a resident of Zhaixia Village, Pengzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. Ye explains how they calculated their work points and how they survived the hunger afterwards. Ye's brother-in-law was an officer in Guangxi, and brought him thirty jin of rice. Since they were not allowed to cook, they cooked the rice at night and ate cold rice balls the next day. His brother-in-law also got two little pigs back. Ye fed the pigs with human breast milk so that they could grow into adult pigs. Later he sold the pigs to build his house. In 1959, with some other villagers, he escaped to find work in Jiangxi. They begged for food and worked different jobs on their way. They got imprisoned for this after they were back. Ye listed details of 5 villagers who died of starvation.

Yi Guixiang (b. 1945) is a resident of Pengtian Village, Jiangxi Province. In this interview, Yi talks about the difficult time during the Great Famine when she was working at a mold factory. Since 1958, if the villagers did not work at the production team, they would not obtain any food. Since everyone was only assigned with two liangs of rice, the rice had to be cooked with bran, potato scrapes and others. Moreover, there was always a scramble at the canteen for the scarce supply of food. The transcript of this interview has been translated into English.
