Collection comprises over 500 black-and-white photographic prints, along with negatives, contact sheets, photographer's notes, journals, writings, speeches, correspondence related to photography, and printed material, totaling over 9000 items. Kwilecki's photographic work documents rural and small-town life in and around Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia, an undertaking he began as a self-taught photographer in 1960 and continued until his death in 2009. Subjects include local landscapes, tobacco workers, county fairs, hog slaughtering, cemeteries, churches, courthouses, recreation on the Flint River, local industry, shoppers, downtowns, and house porches and interiors. The themes of race relations and religious life predominate. Many of Kwilecki's subjects come from the African American community in Decatur County. Significant correspondents in the manuscripts series include photographers Alex Harris and David Vestal; the collection includes a small set of Vestal photographs. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Weston La Barre (1911-1996) was an anthropology professor at Duke University from 1946 to 1977. Prior to coming to Duke, La Barre worked in military intelligence in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The Weston La Barre Papers include correspondence, publications, lectures, committee materials, teaching materials, photographs, audio recordings, scrapbooks and other materials. La Barre's professional interests included cultural anthropology, religion, psychodelic drugs such as peyote, and psychology. Major correspondents include George Devereux, Allen Ginsberg, Alexander Morin, Richard Evans Schultes, and Howard Stein. English.

Creighton Lacy has seved as a professor at Duke University Divinity School since 1953. The collection contains correspondence, reports, sermons, directories, memoranda, printed matter and clippings.

Collection comprises thirteen programs and broadsides for private benefit musical concerts and dramas performed primarily in 1867. The majority feature dramas performed at Mr. Jerome's Private Theater. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Ladyslipper Music is a North Carolina non-profit organization which has been involved in many facets of women's music since 1976. Their mission is to heighten public awareness of the achievements of women artists and musicians, and to expand the scope and availability of musical and literary recordings by women. This collection documents the history, activities, and output of this organization.

Holograph manuscript, signed, in which Laennec desribes the case of a patient "W." A facsimile of an ALS to Baron Cuvier, in which Laennec presents various reasons why he should receive the prize, instituted by M. de Montyon and awarded by the Academy of Sciences, for the most useful discovery in the field of medicine.

Bernard Lafferty was hired as Doris Duke's butler in 1987 and he remained in that position until her death in 1993. In her will Doris Duke named Bernard Lafferty as the executor of her estate and for a brief period of time he was President of the Doris Duke Foundation. After a lengthy trial disputing the provisions of the will, Bernard Lafferty surrendered his post as co-executor and membership in the Foundation. He was replaced by a Board of Trustees who took control over Doris Duke's assets. Bernard Lafferty died in 1996, where upon he willed his assets to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The collection spans the years 1952-1999, although the majority of the collection is concentrated in the years 1993-1996. The holdings in this collection are from Bernard Lafferty's personal files and include condolences after the death of Doris Duke, memoranda and correspondence regarding daily business activities of Doris Duke's estates and of the Foundation, invitations, meeting notes, lists of visitors to Duke Farms, and requests for donations.

Member, House of Commons (1886-1890), Governor of Queensland (1895-1901), and of Bombay (1903-1907). Papers relating to Lord Lamington's governorship of Bombay, India. Letters and administrative notes concern budget surpluses and recommendations for local use; development of a program for inoculation against the plague; administrative and diplomatic matters in India; the relations between Hindus and Muslims, Europeans and Indians. Correspondents include George Nathaniel Curzon, Marquis Curzon; Gilbert John Murray Kynynmond Elliot, Earl of Minto; Sir Shahu Chhatrapati, Maharaja of Kolhapur; Horatio Herbert Kitchener, Earl of Kitchener; and John Morley, Viscount Morley. Includes two letter books containing regular and detailed dispatches from the governor to the Marquis Curzon, the Governor-general of India, and Lord Minto, the Viceroy. Handwritten indices to the letter books refer to various persons and topics such as administration, agriculture, the army, commerce, the courts, education, public finance, industry, journalism, public health, social life and customs, the British protectorate of Aden, and transportation, especially railroads.

Contains papers and a scrapbook of William Hall Lander, a Trinity College/Duke University student from 1919 to 1924. Types of materials include pamphlets, short writings, photographs, correspondence, artwork, receipts, report cards, class schedules, a plaque, patches, letters, cards, playbooks, programs, invitations, telegrams, and clippings. Major subjects include life at Duke University, adoption of the Blue Devils mascot, the Beta Lambda chapter of Sigma Chi, secret societies, and general fraternity governance. Photojournalist who documented the women's movement and associated human rights issues since the 1960s. The photographs in the collection date from 1959 to 2007, with the bulk taken by Lane in the 1970s and 1980s. Subjects focus largely on events and individuals. Events include consciousness raising groups, planning meetings, and local women's conferences. Large events include Equal Rights Amendment demonstrations, and International Women's Year and National Organization for Women conferences and marches, in major cities such as New York City, Washington D.C., Mexico City, and Houston. Other events folders document Pro-Choice rallies and protests addressing harassment, sexism, and violence towards women. Another large series documents women involved in the movement, from feminist leaders to event attendees and coordinators. Subject folder photographs are of women at work, women athletes, men for women's rights, and events relating to daycare, feminist slogans and signs, lesbian rights, opposition, women of color, sexist images, and sexual health. Smaller sets of images document protests against war, pornography, and nuclear power. The collection also includes photographs of Bettye Lane and her original inventory sheets. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

The Lane family were residents of Wallingford, Connecticut. This Civil War collection consists of a diary, correspondence, a scrapbook, and other materials. The diary belonged to Oscar B. Lane, who enlisted in June of 1861 and served as the drummer boy for the 5th Connecticutt Volunteers. The diary (1862, May 3-Sept. 10) contains entries concerning the Battle of Winchester during Jackson's Shenandoah Campaign and the Battle of Cedar Mountain of the second Bull Run Campaign. Correspondence (1863, Sept. 5-Dec. 18) from Theodore, Josiah, and Oscar Lane to their sister Harriet were written from Portsmouth, Va., while the three of them served with Harland's Brigade. Letters describe the shooting of deserters, camp life, and the social life in the city of Norfolk, Va. The scrapbook contains clippings concerning Veteran's Drum Corps, the Grand Army of the Republic, photographs, badges, a survivors roster for the 5th Regiment of Conn. Volunteers, postcards, and clippings concerning Wallingford, Conn. Other papers include programs for a veterans' reunion and a convention of the Conn. Fife and Drum Corps.

Rick Lang was a photographer and faculty member at the Creadlé School of Art, Winter Park, Florida. Collection comprises 229 black-and-white photographs documenting the American South, particularly Florida and Louisiana, with an emphasis on roadside advertising and signs, small businesses, and weathered buildings. There are also a few images from New Mexico and Arizona. Print sizes range from 11x14 to 20x24 inches. Accompanying the prints are 104 digital image files and one pdf, over 3000 negatives, and 258 contact sheets. In addition there are print materials chiefly associated with Lang's solo and group exhibits, including three photobooks, and condolences sent upon his passing in 2013. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Raleigh, North Carolina attorney. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, broadsides, and other records of Allen Langston related to his involvement in several North Carolina political campaigns from the 1940s-1960s. Specific campaigns covered include: Kerr Scott's, William B. Unstead's, and Terry Sanford's gubernatorial campaigns in 1947-1949, 1952, and 1960, respectively; and Frank Porter Graham's campaign for U.S. Senate in 1950. Papers from Scott's campaign deal specifically with his attack on his opponent, State Treasurer Charles M. Johnson, for allegedly mismanaging public finances.

U.S. Army colonel from North Carolina. Bound volumes, correspondence, scrapbooks, and clippings detailing Langston's activities as a Trinity College (later became Duke University) student, then later as a U.S. Army colonel in World War II, and assistant to General Lewis B. Hershey on the Selective Service Board. Langston also served on General E. H. Crowder's draft board in Washington, D.C. during World War I: Crowder was chiefly responsible for drafting of the Selective Service Act which was passed in May 1917, and as Provost Marshal General had responsibility for administering the program during the war. The bulk of the material covers the period 1941-1946. Other items provide evidence for Langston's support of Prohibition, and his role as opponent of Al Smith in the N.C. Democratic primary in 1928. Later additions to the collection document earlier Langston family history. They also contain Langston's poems, and correspondence with Professor Edwin Mims about them, a scrapbook of the Simmons-Bailey campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1930, and his correspondence with New York attorney Roscoe S. Conkling concerning Langston's opposition to compulsory military service during peacetime.

John Tate Lanning (1902-1976) was a historian, colonial Latin America scholar, and Duke University Professor of History. This collection includes correspondence, manuscript materials, committee notes, student papers, newsletters, conference materials, curriculum materials, travel diaries, interview transcriptions, and field research notes. Major subjects include the Duke University Department of History, Duke University Research Council, Hispanic American Historical Review, Latin American library resources, student and teaching of Latin American history, research in the social sciences, and Latin American colleges and universities. English.

William Thomas Laprade was Professor of History at Trinity College (now Duke University) from 1909 to 1953 and Chair of the Department of History from 1938 to 1952. Papers contain personal and professional correspondence, notes, reports, printed materials, manuscript materials, photographs, diplomas, memorabilia, clippings, student papers, and letters from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Major subjects include William Thomas Laprade, history of Trinity College, Trinity College Press, Duke University Press, Duke University Department of History, Duke University libraries, The South Atlantic Quarterly, the American Association of University Professors, study and teaching of European history, American Historical Association, the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, Kiwanis Club of Durham, and Phi Beta Kappa. Major subjects of correspondence include family life, the Great Depression, World War I, and World War II. Materials range in date from 1660-1975 (bulk 1898-1975).

Collection comprises a set of 48 color photographs, 13 reproductions of historic postcards, and several introductory panels, from a project by photographer and artist Nate Larson entitled "Map of All the Railroads," inspired by H.V. Poor's "Map of All the Railroads in the United States in Operation and Progress" (1854). The 13x19 inch digital color photographs, taken in 2015, explore social and economic aspects of thirteen railroad-centered cities and towns identified in Poor's publication, and their progress and potential future. Images feature cityscapes, railroad tracks, buildings and businesses, abandoned sites, monuments, several portraits of people, and other subjects. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Daniel William Lassiter was a physician of Petersburg, Va. Collection comprises correspondence and other papers of Daniel William Lassiter, and of his sons, Francis Rives Lassiter, lawyer and U.S. Representative from Virginia, and Charles Trotter Lassiter, politician. Much of the correspondence concerns the political career of Francis R. Lassiter. ALS. Latane responds to Jacobs' inquiries regarding a 1797 letter by Benjamin Rush on slavery. In his opinion, "the framers of the Constitution seem to have regarded slavery as a dying institution, but the invention of the cotton-gin in 1793 gave it a new lease on life."

The Latin American Student Organization, LASO, was created in 2016 by undergraduate students to create community among Latin American students at Duke University. The collection contains one sweatshirt with the group's logo.

The La Unidad Latina (LUL), Labda Upsilon Lambda, Rho Chapter, is a Latino fraternity at Duke University. The collection consists of correspondence, a brochure, and several flyers related to the founding of the La Unidad Latina chapter at Duke University.

The 25 photographs in this collection belong to a body of work entitled "One Sun, One Shadow", which was commissioned by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta for the 2012 exhibition "Picturing the South". They were all taken in the American South from 2010 to 2011, and explore Lavalette's connection to the South through landscapes, people, and music traditions. Though the majority of the 20x24 inch inkjet prints are in color, there are also five black-and-white prints. Titles for each print were assigned by the photographer. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Bruce Lawrence is a professor in the Department of Religion and the founding director of the Duke Islamic Studies Center (DISC). The Bruce Lawrence papers include materials related to the founding of DISC as well as other programs and projects related to Islam and Middle East Studies both at Duke and elsewhere.

Autograph document, signed. A deposition presented to a grand jury, in which Lawrence accuses his servant, Peter Tom, of theft of opium and other patent medicines, and a Dr. Heerman of selling the stolen goods.

Collection has personal and business correspondence of William Law, the Dubose family, and of Cyrus Bacot, with whom Law was connected by marriage. As captain of the Black Creek Militia, 1813-1820, Law's papers include muster rolls, accounts of courts-martial, lists of absentees with their excuses, and numerous orders. Law's plantation records are confined to frequent lists of slaves, accounts of cotton planted and produced, and weights of hogs killed. The bulk of the papers is concerned with Law's activities as a merchant in partnership with Daniel Dubose, include records of large amounts of cotton sold to Charleston commission merchants, of turpentine and bricks sold, and papers, bills, receipts, account books, daybooks, cashbooks, and ledgers. Included also are an account book of lumber sold by Law and Bacot, and letters and papers showing Law's activities in the temperance movement and the Presbyterian Church. Personal letters, mostly post 1839, include letters of sympathy at the death of Law's wife in 1839, frequent letters from member of the Cooper and Dubose families, and letters from Law's brother, James Robert Law, who was often in financial difficulties. J. R. Law was a planter in the Sumter District of South Carolina and in Madison County, Fla., after 1848. Miscellaneous materials include a description of the Alabama River and environs, 1815, accounts of trips to Red Sulphur Springs and other springs in Virginia, 1835, and Civil War letters from William Law's son discussing camp life.

The Leach family of Randolph County traces its founding to Stephen Leach who appears in the records of provincial North Carolina in the mid-eighteenth century. The Leach family joined other white families in Randolph County to improve the local school, Brown's Schoolhouse, and continued to be involved with the school through to its development into Trinity College. This collection consists of materials regarding the family's history. Included are genealogy research files, correspondence, personal writings, photographs, scrapbook, autograph books, and clippings. Materials with known dates span 1798 to 1994.

The papers of Josephine Napoleon Leary contain financial and legal papers, correspondence, biographical materials, and photographs pertaining to the life and business ventures of African American businesswoman Josephine N. Leary and her daughter Clara Ryan. Records document her real estate and other business transactions the coastal town of Edenton, North Carolina, where they resided; the earliest deed dates back to 1875. There are also architectural and historical documents relating to Edenton. Photographs of Leary and Reeves family members date from 1895 to about 1935. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection contains the papers of W. T. Leavell and of his son-in-law, Edward Allen Hitchcock McDonald, Confederate officer, attorney, and businessman. Leavell's papers contain correspondence with leaders of the Episcopal Church concerning church business, doctrinal disputes within the church, and debates between the Episcopal Church and other Protestant denominations; along with family letters and papers which provide information on the salaries, duties, and home life of a minister. The papers of Edward Allen Hitchcock McDonald contain letters from Civil War veterans of McDonald's regiments, the 11th Virginia Cavalry and the 77th Virginia Militia, concerning battles and skirmishes in which they participated; a manuscript copy of McDonald's "The History of the Laurel Brigade," and letters, 1870-1890, pertaining to the Louisville Abstract and Loan Company and general business conditions in Louisville, Ky.

Family originally from Connecticut; later settled in Petersburg, Virginia. Correspondence, journals, memorandum books, sermons, an autograph album (1822), and other papers of Abner Johnson Leavenworth and of his son, Frederick P. Leavenworth. Sermons comprise about half of the manuscript collection. Includes pre-Civil War letters from theological students in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York; a tuition ledger for the Van Buren, Arkansas Female Seminary (1860-1862); and genealogical information on the Leavenworth family. Correspondents include Calvin Colton, Harrison Gray, Otis Dwight, Jeremiah Evarts, Samuel Lee, Benjamin Palmer, and Noah Porter.

Although filed under the name Leckie, the collection primarily consists of the papers of two individuals: W. Robert Leckie, and his son-in-law, William Hendrick. The papers of Leckie, who was educated in Scotland, are concerned with construction of public buildings, canals, arsenals, aqueducts, fortifications, masonry of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and surveying and building of walls in the District of Columbia. The papers of Hendrick and those of his wife, after his death, constitute a long record of the sales of plantation products and the purchase of supplies from commission merchants in Petersburg, Virginia, and the operation of a series of corn and grain farms.
