Ruth Stokes (1918-1992) was a Black woman from North Carolina who married Pervis Stokes (1919-2012) in 1942. Pervis Stokes joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. Collection consists of letters from Ruth to Pervis documenting their relationship during and after World War II, particularly their struggles and reconciliation. Frequent topics of discussion include general updates, inquires into when Pervis will return, sexual desires, financial and health struggles, and Ruth's pregnancy and the subsequent birth of their son, Reginald. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture and as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Ruth "Peach Pie" Webb Morgan is an African American native of Granville County, North Carolina. The collection contains material collected by Morgan from the church-related "Women's Conference" held at the Oxford Public Works Complex in Oxford, North Carolina in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004. Items include handouts, photographs, meeting agendas, and notebooks. The materials offer insights into the status and relationships of African American women in North Carolina, and their church-related affiliations and activities. Ruth Zalph is a Chapel Hill-based activist for peace, founding member of the Triangle Raging Grannies, and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) Triangle Chapter. This collection documents Ruth Zalph's activist engagements including public appearances and relations, letters to the editor, protests, arrests and court records, and documentation of her national and international travels for peace activism.

Sacred Worth is a student group affiliated with the Divinity School of Duke University that seeks to serve the community by increasing awareness of LGBTQI persons in the church. The Sacred Worth records include the group's administrative materials, including meeting agendas, notes, flyers, and other materials, as well as materials related to the 2014 exhibit Clouds of Witnesses.

Family papers documenting the Lefroy, Caperton, and Montague familes, representing the families in Sallie Bingham's matrilineal line. These materials belonged to Sallie Bingham's mother, Mary Caperton Bingham, until her death, when they went to Sallie; her sister, Eleanor Bingham Miller; and their niece, Emily Bingham. Two figures documented in these papers, Helena Lefroy Caperton and Sallie Montague Lefroy, are the focus, along with her mother, of Sallie Bingham's 2014 book, The Blue Box. Includes genealogies, letters, wills, a bill of sale, short stories and other writing, speeches, a prayer book, list, a few clippings, and Irish and English postcards.

Feminist and author. The Sallie Bingham Papers provide rich documentation of the personal life, literary development, and philanthropic activities of Sallie Bingham, feminist and writer. The papers, dated 1900-2011, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1940s to 2011, are comprised of correspondence, speeches, writings, subject files, personal papers, diaries and notebooks, legal and financial papers, audiovisual recordings, and photographic media. Included also are some records of The Kentucky Foundation for Women, a philanthropic organization founded by Bingham; The American Voice, a literary journal founded by Bingham and published under the auspices of The Kentucky Foundation for Women; and Santa Fe Stages, a regional theater founded by Bingham. Arranged into the following series: Audiovisual Materials, Correspondence, Diaries and Notebooks, Kentucky Foundation for Women, Legal and Financial, Miscellaneous, Photographs, Poetry, Santa Fe Stages, Speeches, Subject Files, Writings, and Oversize Material, with the Writings, Diaries and Notebooks, and Correspondence Series composing the bulk of the collection. Multiple additions have been added since the collection was processed; these are represented at the end of this finding aid.

Sally Dalton Robinson, a white philanthropist and community volunteer, graduated from the Woman's College at Duke University in 1955. She has served on the Board of Trustees, committees, and program boards at Duke while also being active on advisory councils and committees in Charlotte, North Carolina. The collection consists of course syllabi and exams, correspondence, World War II military patches, photographs, and a "Putting Husband Through" (P.H.T.) diploma.

Sarah Jane "Sally" Deutsch is Professor Emerita of History at Duke. She joined the faculty in 2004 where she served as chair of the Department of History from 2004-2006 and was Dean of the Social Sciences at Trinity College of Arts and Sciences from 2006-2009. This collection contains administrative, and course materials related to the History department and campus life at Duke University; and correspondence related to conferences, publications, and professional organizations. The collection also includes drafts of papers and notes for lectures given by others.

Sally Schauman was an art collector and resident of Durham, North Carolina. Collection consists of 25 prints by the following 20th century women photographers, assembled by Schauman: Berenice Abbot; Catherine Angel; Ilse Bing; Ruth Bernhard; Esther Bubley; Debbie Fleming Caffery; Sandra Russell Clark (2); Imogen Cunningham (2); Laura Gilpin; Mona Kuhn; Helen Levitt (2); Genevieve Naylor; Anne Noggle; Mary Peck; Susan Seubert (2); Joyce Tenneson; Charlotte Watts; Eudora Welty; Marion Post Wolcott; and Bayard Morgan Wootten. Subjects include portraits (among which Maya Angelou, Martha Graham, Carson McCullers, Marianne Moore, and Eleanor Roosevelt), landscapes, animal and botanical images, and studies of the American South. The photographs are almost all gelatin silver, with a few platinum prints and color inkjets. The mounts range in size from 8x10 to 22x28 inches, with one panoramic print measuring 10x30 inches. An obituary and funeral service program are also in the collection. Sally Tatnall is a self-described radical feminist and community and political activist from Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Her work centers on lesbian rights, feminism, women's spirituality, reproductive health, anti-racism, and back-to-the-land projects. The collection includes personal materials such as journals, correspondence and photographs, as well as documentation of Tatnall's activism, and printed materials including 1970s sex education pamphlets.

Over 200 pieces of correspondence dating from 1759–1880, written by women of the Saltar and Gordon families of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland between themselves and other family relations. Over a third of the letters date before 1825. The principal correspondents are Elizabeth 'Betsy" Gordon Saltar, her daughters Lucy Saltar and Frances "Fanny" Saltar, and Elizabeth's cousins Mary Gordon and Polly Gordon. Dozens of other letters come from family friends and relatives, male and female, from prominent families in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and some from the Midwest and New England states. Topics include courtship; marriage; religion; pastimes; visits and travel; and the welfare of family members and friends. There are many references to illnesses, with many details on treatments and outcomes. There are also long passages and references to grief and mourning on the death of loved ones, and some discussions of finances. There are a few references to slavery and to enslaved people and servants. Letters sent during the Civil War discuss events centered around Pennsylvania, particularly in 1863; one discusses African American troops and their role in the war, and the circumstances surrounding the recruitment of the 3rd United States Colored Troops' commander, Benjamin C. Tilghman. A few earlier letters speak of the War of 1812, especially in and around Baltimore and Philadelphia. Acquired by the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

The Samet family is a family of Lithuanian-Jewish descent that settled in North Carolina in the early part of the twentieth century. This collection mainly consists of the correspondence between Sydney Samet and his family in North Carolina while he was training at various United States Army airfields during World War II. Also included are letters sent to Sydney's mother and sister by the United States War Department and the family members of other soldiers from Sydney’s bomber crew after they were declared missing in August 1944. Topics represented in the collection include army life, Army Air Force training, and updates from family members and acquaintances.

Hugh James Rose (1795-1838) was a priest in the Anglican church, a writer, and a theologian. Sam Hammond (1948-2021) was the Duke Chapel carillonneur from 1968-2018 and was a music librarian and rare book cataloger in the Duke University Libraries. The Sam Hammond research collection on Hugh James Rose includes an original letter written by Hugh James Rose, copies of Rose's papers held at other repositories, printed copies of Rose's works, analysis, and correspondence, among other materials.

Collection pertains to Reed's political and community activism, the civil rights movement, and race and labor relations issues in the South. Consists of the records of the Durham, N.C. organization founded by Reed, Trumpet of Conscience, and a run of the newsletter of the same name, 1987-2000. Other papers include correspondence, chiefly to Reed; photographs; obituaries, interviews, speeches, and new articles by and about Sam Reed; fliers, invitations, and other items stemming from community events; and awards. Topics covered or touched on by these materials include the history of race relations in Durham, N.C.; Durham politics; activism in North Carolina and Durham; the involvement of Duke University and North Carolina Central students, faculty, and administration in local events; labor issues and unions; and, more generally, human rights issues in the South. Garfield after he was shot, between July 2 and Sept. 2, 1881. These included David H. Agnew, Frank Hastings Hamilton, Joseph K. Barnes, D.W. Bliss and Robert Reyburn. Correspondence from Hamilton and from a S.A. Boynton relate to this collection.

Four documents. Receipt of payment by the estate of Robert C. Livingston to Samuel Bard; license to practice medicine, issued to Dr. Larry G. Hall, November 1811, by the Medical Society of Dutchess County, New York, and signed by Samuel Bard, President; two blank certificates (in Latin) of membership in the New York Medical Society, dated (stamped) 1789, and signed by John Bard (1716-1799), Samuel Bard's father.

Collection consists of 19th century albumen photographs taken by commercial photographer Samuel Bourne and other partners as they traveled to sites in modern-day India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Burma. Of the 646 prints in the collection, 200 are mounted in three large bound commercial photograph albums, while the remaining 446 are single, loose prints; all were published by the firm Bourne & Shepherd. The majority of the prints range in size from roughly 6x9 to 10x12 inches. Subjects include the vast landscapes of nothern India; landmarks such as temples, rivers and canals, monuments, mountain hostels, and European-built cathedrals and civic structures; rural scenes from villages and tea plantations; and scenes from the cities of Delhi, Bombay (Mumbai), and Calcutta (Kolkata). There are also several dozen ethnic portraits of native inhabitants and group portraits of English officials and Indian counterparts. A number of images have been attributed to Bourne's partners Charles Shepherd and Colin Murray.

Lawyer and political leader, of Hollidaysburg (Blair Co.), Pa. Personal, legal, and business correspondence, legal papers, reports, notices, and other material. The political material relates to Blair Co. and Pennsylvania Whig politics, to Calvin's service as U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania (1849-1851), patronage, service to constituents, and national problems and issues. The legal papers largely concern collection of clients' debts. Business records and papers relate to a mining concern in Colorado, industrial firms in Pennsylvania; canal, railroad, and road transportation; westward expansion in Iowa and elsewhere, and the price of land in the West.

Lawyer, politician, and U.S. Representative from Orangeburg, S.C. Correspondence, business and legal papers, and printed matter, mostly dating from 1855-1900, centered on South Carolina history. All pre-1850 papers are legal documents concerned with land surveys and transfers. A few letters written while Dibble was a Confederate soldier relate to the home front; postwar correspondence deals with such matters as phosphate mining, education, professional activities, African Americans in post-Reconstruction politics, and Dibble's opposition to Governor Tillman. Later papers display his expanding activities in banking and railroads. After 1900 the papers concern brother A. C. Dibble, and sons L. V., an insurance agent, and Samuel Jr., a surveyor and civil engineer.

Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook (1928-2017) was a political scientist who became Duke University's first African American professor in 1966. He also served as president of Dillard University from 1975 to 1997. The Samuel DuBois Cook Papers contains Cook's speech files, drafts and copies of Cook's writings, and other assorted papers including correspondence and subject folders for his research and writings on Benjamin Elijah Mays. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Samuel Patterson (1799-1874) was a farmer, Indian commissioner, Justice of the Peace in Caldwell County, railroad official, and state legislator from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Collection consists primarily of personal and business papers of Samuel Patterson, his family, and the Graham family, of North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. The papers pertain to North Carolina railroads, legislative and politics in North Carolina, sale of Cherokee lands, mercantile affairs, the education of children, and other topics. Correspondents include C. B. Aycock, K. P. Battle, W. J. Bingham, Edward W. Bok, Locke Craig, Josephus Daniels, Dorothea L. Dix, John Haywood, William H. Haywood, Edwin Mims, John Charles McNeill, William Norwood, Henry J. Stockard, C. Alphonso Smith, Zebulon B. Vance, and Henry Van Dyke. Correspondence from the Civil War and Reconstruction periods discusses abolitionism, slavery, supplies to Confederate soldiers, refugees, prices, military affairs and leaders, the establishment of a school for African Americans, and refers to the dislike of the policies of Jefferson Davis and Judah P. Benjamin. The papers of Lucy Bramlette Patterson relate to her travels through Europe and Mexico in the 1880s, her literary and extensive political interests, and family matters.

Samuel Fox Mordecai (1852-1927) was a lawyer who served as Dean of Trinity College Law School from around 1905 to 1927. The collection covers mainly the period between 1871 and Mordecai's death in 1927 and largely consists of correspondence and some law-themed periodicals.

ALS. Letters to surgeon Valentine Mott, horticulturalist William Robert Prince, to auditor and naturalist William Lee relate to natural history. Papers also include verses from Le Brun dedicated to Mitchill by Francesca Pascalis and a letter to her from her father Felix Pascalis Ouviere. Mitchill also receives a letter of introduction from Roberts Vaux. In 1928 Mary Mayes writes Dr. Braislin regarding the sale of Mitchill papers in her possession.

Papers include correspondence from John Jones, David Jackson and William Duncan, and statements of account with a dentist, physicians and pharmacists, including Andrew Spence, Philip S. Physick, Benjamin Rush, Nicholas Belleville, John Hart, John Ott and William Evans.

Planter and merchant families of New Bern (Craven County), North Carolina. Business and personal correspondence of four generations of the Biddle and Simpson families of New Bern, N.C. Most notable are the papers of John Simpson (1728-1788), locally a prominent Revolutionary figure; his son, Samuel; and his great-grandson, Samuel Simpson Biddle (1811-1872). Topics include financial affairs, including deeds, property in Boston, and the shipment of goods; activities of the Baptist Church in the New Bern area; agricultural and business interests; education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and children's education in the 19th century. Many letters were written during the Civil War and revolve around the activities of S.S. Biddle, Jr. and James W. Biddle, containing brief descriptions of campaigns, troop movements, traitors, fortifications in South Carolina, camp life, and epidemics. The collection also has 12 volumes of plantation and personal accounts, bills, and receipts, loose deeds and notes, as well as information from the estates of Samuel Simpson and William Biddle.

Samuel Simons was a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. Collection contains a letter from Samuel Simons to an unnamed recipient describing the recent election which he narrowly won against a Whig candidate.

Samuel Smith Downey (1792-1851) was an Irish American, plantation owner, and enslaver of Granville County, N.C. The early portion of this collection is made up of the papers of Ephraim Macquillen, a merchant of Richmond, Va., containing letters, bills, and receipts from business firms in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston to which he sold flour and tobacco and from which he bought supplies. The papers of Samuel S. Downey, which also contain the papers of James Webb Alexander, John Granville Smith, Thomas Downey, James Downey, and son-in-law Isaac H. Davis, concern S. S. Downey's administration of the estate of John G. Smith and the many suits involving the estate; management of plantations in Mississippi and North Carolina including correspondence and legal papers dealing with hiring enslaved people to build a railroad from Natchez to Jackson, Miss., in the 1830s; letters from factories in Richmond, Va., concerning Downey's tobacco; and the Civil War letters of Downey's sons, for the most part describing the effects of the war on civilians.

Correspondents include John William Colenso, bishop of Natal; Christopher Palmer Rigby, British Army officer in Zanzibar; Charles Frederick Mackenzie, bishop of Central Africa; David Livingstone; Lord John Russell, British foreign secretary; Henry Labouchere, colonial secretary; Walter Chambers, missionary in Sarawak; Thomas Clarkson; Sir James Brooke, rajah of Sarawak; and Sir Samuel White Baker. Also includes some of Wiberforce's routine correspondence regarding appointments, meetings, and casual matters.

Primarily the papers of Derrill Sanders, Burrell Sanders, and Benjamin Sanders, and of the Sanders family, concerning the management of small plantations, including Lifeland Plantation, in St. Bartholomew's Parish, Colleton County, South Carolina. Correspondence contains family letters and letters from various cotton factors in Charleston, S.C. Financial papers include household and plantation accounts, receipts for the sale of slaves, and tax receipts. The collection also contains wills, deeds, records of lawsuits, and three volumes, including a book listing slaves and their prices and a record of days missed and wages lost by black workers in 1866.

This collection includes administrative records, promotional materials, and event-related materials from the Sanford School of Public Policy.

Collection includes black and white photographs of clothing, department, furniture, grocery, hardware, household appliance, music and musical instrument, shoe and other retail store window displays, signs and interior merchandise displays of businesses in the San Jose, California area. Photographs also depict clerks and store employees at work as well as storefront street scenes. Companies represented include Albers, Armour Star, Bauer & Black, Best Foods, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Montgomery Ward, Pacific Gas, Standard Oil (Calol, Pearl Oil, Red Cross gasoline, Zerolene Oil), Sunkist, Vellumoid and Victor records. Collection includes black-and-white photographs, photograph holders, and promotional campaign instructions, map, and personnel lists that document the Kiddie Kandids' "Santa and Me!" seasonal campaign at the May department store and other locations. Sarabande Books is a non-profit literary press publishing poetry and fiction. The Sarabande Books records include materials documenting the founding of the company as well as yearly publishing materials.

Sarah Wallis Bowdich Lee was an English naturalist, author, and illustrator. This collection consists of an untitled, apparently unpublished, 1830s manuscript (439 pages) surveying the African continent and discussing African exploration, history, geography, and culture from a white British colonialist perspective.
