Tyre Glen was a slave trader, planter, postmaster, and merchant in North Carolina. This collection consists largely of business papers, particularly of financial and legal documents concerning the slave trade in North Carolina, Virginia and Alabama as well as possibly other locations. In addition to copious information on slave trading in the 1830s and 1840s, the collection includes references to Glen's Union sympathies and claims for horses confiscated by the U.S. Army; farming; exemptions from the Confederate Army and other topics.

Global Rights is an international human rights advocacy organization headquartered in Washington D.C. The Global Rights Records span the dates 1980-2006 and consist of correspondence, administrative, research and project files, and printed material related to the work of Global Rights (known before 2003 as the International Human Rights Law Group - IHRLG), a human rights advocacy organization based in Washington D.C. Material in this collection documents human rights abuses in various contexts while also providing insight into the complex administrative issues facing nongovernmental organizations working to curb those violations. The collection is divided into series for Administrative Files, Country Files, Printed Material, and Project Files. The Administrative Files Series contains records of meetings of the board of directors of Global Rights, executive correspondence, and training material for human rights advocates. Material in the Country Files Series documents Global Right's activities in specific countries, generally concentrated in Africa, East Asia, and Latin America. Files on human rights and social conditions in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Hercegovina, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zaire are among the most extensive in the series but other countries are also represented. The Printed Material Series chiefly consists of articles and speeches by IHRLG/Global Rights staff, and reports by the IHRLG on human rights in many countries. Various issue-based advocacy efforts chronicled in the Project Files Series complete the collection. Activities documented in this series include increasing legal infrastructure in Cambodia through the Cambodian Defenders Project; advocating for women's rights (economic and sexual) and targeting sexual slavery and human trafficking; and targeting racial discrimination in the U.S. and abroad. An extensive set of project files relates to advocacy for the ratification of human rights treaties, and documents several international meetings such as UN's Meeting of the States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Meeting of the States Parties to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (1980).

College administrator and educator. Served as president of Greensboro College (1936-1952) and Lambuth College (1952-1962), as well as Conference Superintendent of the Sunday School Board of the N.C. Conference (1920's) and Director of Church Relations at California Western University at San Diego for three years. Correspondence, printed material, financial papers, certificates, writings, and photographs relating mostly to Dr. Gobbel's career. Topics include: biographical information about Gobbel and Mrs. Gobbel (d. 1966); college education; education and the church; Methodist Episcopal Church, including the Sunday School Board of the N.C. Conference; East-West Expressway controversy in Durham, 1970s; education in China, 1937; Protestant churches in Czechoslovakia, 1961; financial papers of Robert A. Gobbel of Rowan Co., N.C., 1870s-1890s; inauguration of Gobbel as president of Greensboro College; his term as president of Lambuth College; a description of a trip taken by Dr. and Mrs. Gobbel through eight Latin American countries, New Orleans, and Atlanta in 1965; and Gobbel's service in World War I. Dr. Allen Godbey was a Professor of Old Testament History at Duke University from 1926-1932. The collection contains letters and self-published printed material. The material ranges in date from 1926-1947.

Collection consists of research materials, correspondence, writings, clippings and other printed materials, and a few photographs, mainly from the latter half of Gohdes's career. The earliest date (1811) refers to reproductions of original research materials. Correspondence with other American Literature teachers and authors, combined with other materials relating to Gohdes's institutional and organizational affiliations, in particular with Duke University, the Modern Language Association (MLA), and the journal AMERICAN LITERATURE, comprise the most substantive aspects of this collection. They provide insight into American literary scholarship in the early and mid-twentieth century. Noted authors and scholars of the time whose letters and other writings are in the collection include Alexander Blackburn, Oscar Cargill, Lewis Chase, Robert Elias, Norman Foerster, Arthur Rubin, Arthur Quinn, and Upton Sinclair. Original manuscripts by Gohdes, inscribed reprints of writings by his colleagues, and materials relating to many major British and American literary figures, make up the rest of the collection. There is substantial material on Edgar Allen Poe and American humor. The collection also includes papers documenting Gohdes's research and writing for his last book project, a history of the muscadine grape in North Carolina entitled Scuppernong, North Carolina's Grape and Its Wines. Collection consists of photographs by Peter Goin on the theme of the interactions and the connections between people and the natural world, and the way people manage, perceive, and represent "nature." The images depict altered and artificial landscapes featuring beaches, canals, farm fields, rivers, prescribed burns and reforestation sites, zoos, an abandoned town, and other places. They were shot in various locations, predominantly in North and South Carolina and Virginia, but also in Alabama, Georgia, central Florida, Arizona, California, Tennessee, and Nevada. The project resulted in a book, Humanature (1996) and an exhibit. Image formats include 16x20 inch exhibit-quality color prints, accompanied by negatives, black-and-white work prints, and book illustration prints. Research, correspondence, and other publication materials are also included in the collection. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts, Duke University.

Mattie L. Goldberg (1887-1989) was the daughter of Birdie Kronheimer and William Lehman. The Kronheimer-Lehman family was a well-known Jewish family in Durham who were active in civic, social, and business circles. Collection includes correspondence, family photographs, scrapbooks, notebooks, and other materials that document the lives of the family, social, civic, and business lives of the Kronheimer, Lehman, and Goldberg families and their extended family members in Durham, N.C. Materials focus most on Mattie L. Goldberg, Carolyn Goldberg Knuemann, and Harry W. Lehman, but other family members are represented as well.

D.T. Suzuki was a scholar of Zen Buddhism, often attributed with introducing Zen to the West. He was born in Japan in 1870, and after working as a translater in the United States, began writing books and essays about Zen. He spent much of his life traveling around the United States speaking about Eastern religions and teaching at Columbia University. An enormously influential figure, he is cited by artists and thinkers as disparate as Carl Jung and John Cage as an important influence on thier work. The D.T. Suzuki Documentary Project Collection is comprised of taped material, amassed by Michael Goldberg in the making of his documentary A Zen Life - D.T. Suzuki. It consists of a series of interviews conducted between the years 2002 and 2005, as well as a lecture given at Tokyo University by Prof. Brian Victoria.

Collection comprises 251 black-and-white photographic prints taken by David Goldblatt during the 1960s of black and white South African miners at work, and South African Afrikaners. Collection also includes copies of three 16 mm films, "Soweto," "On the Mines," and "Some Afrikaners," created by Goldblatt in 1976 from his still images. Arthur Golden was professor emeritus at the City College of the City University of New York; editor of Walt Whitman’s Blue Book (1968), and co-editor of Leaves of grass: a textual variorium of the printed poems (1980). Collection comprises a copy of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass (3rd edition), containing Arthur Golden's marks toward his Walt Whitman's Blue Book edition. Golden presented the volume to Professor Gay Wilson Allen in May 1962.

The Joy Golden Papers span the years 1956-2012 and include correspondence, audition records, scripts, print advertisements, design layouts, storyboards, and other records that document Golden's career in print and radio/television broadcast advertising. Emma Goldman was an anarchist known for her political activism, writing, and speeches. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. The Emma Goldman papers feature over 300 letters, primarily written by Emma Goldman, although other anarchists, activists, and thinkers are represented as authors, including Alexander Berkman, Eugene Debs, Harry Kelly, Alexander Shapiro, and the Socialist Party of New England. Many of the letter recipients are unnamed (as "Comrade"), but the majority of the letters were directed to Thomas H. Keell, an English compositor and editor for the anarchist periodical Freedom, in London. Letter topics most often center around requests made of Keell in support of various writing projects as well as speaking engagements and organizing work completed in Europe, the United States, and Canada, but also touch on visa constraints for Goldman and Berkman, the state of the anarchist movement in various countries, the lack of support for anarchist publications, as well as general position statements, especially in regard to Soviet Russia and the Spanish Civil War. There are also papers related to various prominent anarchists. These include typescript drafts of four articles and letters by anarchists; nine handwritten articles on anarchist themes written in Italian by Errico Malatesta; publications; press releases; ephemera, including tickets, brochures, solicitation letters, handbills and flyers; a contract and room layout for speaking engagements; Thomas H. Keell's list of works on anarchism; newspaper clippings; and six black-and-white photographs. The Emma Goldman papers are part of the Lisa Unger Baskin Collection.

Fontoynont, Miyajima, Jeanselme, Montizombert, Nemorin and Anpeville write in reply to Goodhue's requests for information on literature on leprosy in their respective countries. M.F. Obregon writes regarding an appointment. Drs. Lie and Hansen of Bergen writes with reference to the Second International Leprosy Congress held in 1909. Among the letters is a typed manuscript, with answers to question on leprosy, signed by an unknown person.

The Goodrich and Baker families hailed from Maine, New Hampshire, Iowa and Illinois. Collection comprises letters, with a few other items, mostly to and from members and friends of the Baker and Goodrich families of Maine, New Hampshire, Iowa and Illinois, chiefly in the 19th century. Included are letters to Union soldiers and letters from Turkey and India in the 1870s and 1880s.

Crauford Goodwin (1934-2017) was the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Economics and administrator at Duke University. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, research, and professional and faculty activities. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Resident of South Berwick, Maine. The centerpiece of this collection is a late 19th century scrapbook belonging to Sarah E. Goodwin of Maine, into which manuscript and printed instructions and patterns for the creation of tapestries, collars, edging, capes, mittens, afghans, hoods, curtains, infant shoes, slippers, and other items were pasted and pinned. Collection also includes a commonplace book of knitting and crocheting patterns, home remedies for illnesses and diseases, and a variety of household tips, as well as poems, literary quotations, and miscellaneous lists of information; as well as a catalog for a Baptist church in South Berwick, Maine (1898), numerous patterns for embroidered monograms, and many loose patterns. Walter Gordy (1909-1985) was a James B. Duke Professor of Physics at Duke University. In his over thirty year career at Duke, he founded and directed the Duke Microwave Laboratory, and researched and published extensively. The Walter Gordy Papers include correspondence, bibliographies, vita, articles, speeches, notebooks, teaching materials, illustrations, photographs, and graphs of experimental results. Major subjects include microwave spectroscopy, microwave radar, the Duke Microwave Laboratory, Army research Office , Durham (ARO-D), and the Duke Department of Physics. English.

William Gorman (1923-2003) was an emeritus fellow at Nuffield College. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, and research. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

O. Milton Gossett was an advertising executive with Compton Advertising and Saatchi & Saatchi agencies. He was also a member of the National Advertising Review Board and conducted career workshops for college students in conjunction with the American Advertising Federation. The O. Milton Gossett Papers span the years 1951-2004 and document Gossett's advertising career with the Compton Advertising (Compton) and Saatchi & Saatchi agencies, along with materials relating to the merger of Compton with Saatchi & Saatchi in 1982, including correspondence with Charles and Maurice Saatchi. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence, writings and speeches, company newsletters, and other printed materials. Also included are advertising proofs and tear sheets, television commercial scripts and storyboards, videocassettes, scrapbooks, clippings, photographs, and cutouts of company employees, as well as artifacts and memorabilia. In addition, there is information on the history of the Procter & Gamble Company and its major advertising campaigns, including a number of advertisements for Ivory Soap.

Elizabeth Lucina Gotham (1887-1968) was a baby nurse in New York, NY who eventually came to be in the employment of Mary Duke and Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr. beginning in the early 1920s. She went on to serve the family of their daughter Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans in Durham, NC. This collection documents the Gotham family and Elizabeth's relationship with the Duke-Biddle and Trent-Semans families.

The Gotham Inc. advertising agency was established by the Interpublic Group in 1994 as an independent agency of the global marketing services holding company. Gotham Inc. is one of New York's leading integrated communication agencies. The Gotham Inc. Records contain primarily video and print advertisements created for clients by Gotham's predecessor companies Daniel & Charles and Laurence, and Charles, Free & Lawson. The materials span 1967-1997 and include videocassettes, slides, magazine and newspaper advertisements, and memorabilia as well as agency brochures and limited general information. ALS. Gould writes of his life as tutor to the family of Mr. McBlair, a wealthy manufacturer of Jericho, Maryland, in long, detailed letters to his father, Nathaniel Duren Gould. In the earlier letters, he describes the trip from Boston, the roads and landscape, and presents a pencil drawing of the McBlair house and surrounding buildings. He writes of the day's routine, his teaching duties, and neighborhood news and gossip. He tells of how he listens for the mail wagon and of his disappointment with his pupils. His letters show that he did manage to keep up with events beyond Jericho, especially in the New England area. In his later letters, he professes a growing interest in medicine and botany. A much later letter informs William Jenks of his election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

John Mead Gould was a Union Army officer and bank teller from Portland, Maine. The collection comprises corresspondence, diaries, legal and financial papers, printed materials, and photographs, chiefly relating to Gould's service with the 1st Maine Infantry Regiment and its successors, the 10th and 29th Maine regiments. Subjects include Civil War campaigns in Louisiana, Maryland, and Virginia; veterans' reunions, pension claims, and the Grand Army of the Republic veterans' organization; wartime and Reconstruction conditions in South Carolina; and Gould's business life in S.C. and Maine after the Civil War. One regimental directory includes a narrative of the career of a freed African American from Louisiana, Harry Johnson, who returned with the Union regiment to Maine. Photographs are chiefly of battlefields visited in 1889, 1910, and 1912, and of Civil War veterans. Also includes the letters and diaries of Gould's wife, Amelia Jenkins Twitchell Gould, 1860-1865, who taught for a freedmen's school in Beaufort, S.C., and diaries written by his brother Samuel McClellan Gould, a Presbyterian minister, 1841-1845, 1890-1895. Letters and other papers relate to the career of zoologist Edward Sylvester Morse, a close friend of Gould's.

Collection consists of 2 signed 8x10 gelatin silver photographs, originally included in the publication of Maggie. Collection consists of 11 DVDs, 9 mini-dv videocassettes, one hard drive, and 12 video files primarily associated with interviews of former Durham, North Carolina mayor R. Wensell Grabarek, from 2004 to 2013, in which Grabarek details his career and participation in desegregating Durham in the early 1960s.

Politician and journalist, of Charleston, S.C. Personal and legal papers. Includes material on Charleston and South Carolina politics; the Charleston American, a newspaper founded by Grace; anti-English feeling at the time of World War I; American sympathy for Irish nationalism; enforcement of the Espionage Act against Grace for his wartime editorials; land speculation in Florida during the 1920s; Grace's speaking engagements on behalf of Alfred E. Smith (1928); his opposition to Roosevelt's nomination in 1932; and his attitude toward world events in the 1930s.

Nancy Ida Grady, a native of Asheville, N.C., graduated from Duke University's Woman's College in 1928. Scrapbook contains photographs, postcards, calling cards, invitations, programs, poems, and other memorabilia. Among the programs are several from church services in Durham and Asheville, theatre productions including performances by the Taurian Players and the YWCA, and several guest lectures at Duke. Also present are exams, quizzes, and study questions from courses at Duke in Bible study, religions of China and Japan, Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Charles Alfred Euston FitzRoy (1892-1970), 10th Duke of Grafton, was a soldier and farmer. The collection consists of a single daily diary that records the events of two trips taken by Charles Alfred Euston FitzRoy and his third wife, Rita, in 1949. Slightly less than half of the diary is used, 171 pages in all, with entries from February 7 through May 28, and from August 8 through October 7. The first portion of the diary describes FitzRoy's daily activities while staying on his ranch near Enkeldoorn in Southern Rhodesia (now Chivhu, Zimbabwe) in March and April and while in Kenya visiting acquaintances in February and on safari in May. The second used portion of the diary records the daily activities of FitzRoy, his family, and friends while hunting in northern Scotland.

Collection contains correspondence, account books, records, sermons, and other papers (chiefly, 1800-1880) of the Graham family of Virginia. Includes letters of the Rev. William Graham, Presbyterian minister and one of the founders of Liberty Hall Academy (later Washington and Lee University); material relating to the patent on Dr. William A. Graham's fire extinguisher; records (1774-1803) of tuition charges and books bought by Washington College students; and correspondence between Edward Graham and Edmund Ruffin discussing scientific experiments.

Sara Grand was a pseudonym for author and feminist Frances Elizabeth Bellenden Clarke (1854-1943), of Great Britain. Includes a signed statement and a letter, both written from Tunbridge Wells.

Businessman, land owner, and state legislator, of Middleway, West Virginia. Personal, family, and business papers, the majority concerning the operation of a country store by Grantham and James W. League. Includes papers relating to Grantham's local agency for the Arlington Mutual Life Insurance Co., and to his political career as a member of the newly-formed state of West Virginia legislature, 1872-1881. Collection includes daybooks, memorandum books, and a two volumes of House bills in the West Virginia legislature, 1872-1873.

Hugh G. Grant was an American diplomat originally from Alabama. He served as U.S. Minister to Albania, 1935-1939. With the exception of his diary, these papers are largely Grant's correspondence and other records from his service as U.S. Minister to Albania, 1935-1939. His extensive diary covers this period, but most of it, as does some of his correspondence and other records, covers the period (1927-1933) while he was secretary to Sen. Hugo L. Black. Other topics covered in detail include the roles of Senators Heflin and Black, Alabama and National Democratic politics, the Depression, particularly in Alabama, the Bonus March on Washington in 1932, Albania and its King Zog, administration of the U.S. Legation in that country, and the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. In his diary, he gives opinions of many people, including Senator Black, Neville Chamberlain, King Zog, and Charles Lindbergh. Between 1933 and 1935, he was in the Division of Western European Affairs in the Department of State, and that service is also covered in this collection. A collection of photographs of Albania, various other places, and some family photos are included. There are a few clippings, and some personal correspondence of Grant and of Mrs. Hugh G. Grant.

General merchant, Pittsylvania Co., Va. Correspondence, account books, daybooks, fee books, invoices, ledgers, memoranda books, records of sales, inventories, and letterpress copybooks, chiefly 1800-1869, of three generations of general merchants of Pittsylvania Co., Va. Business interests included a general store, a tavern, a blacksmith shop, a simplified type of banking, and the keeping of a post office. Large amounts of tobacco were bought and sold before the Civil War. Post-war records indicate a large volume of trade in Peruvian guano and commercial fertilizers. Partners in the firm included Philip L. Grasty and other members of the Grasty family, John F. Rison and Samuel Pannill. Includes letters (1849-1867) of John S. Grasty, a Presbyterian minister, referring to North Carolina agriculture, slave hiring, Unionist sympathy among the Dutch population of Botetourt Co., Va., and the devastation of Fincastle, Va., during the war.

Kris Graves (1982- ) is an artist and publisher based in New York and California. The portfolio is made up of 16 images taken by Graves which speak to the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement as well as to public opinion about Confederate Civil War monuments. The photographs he shot at dusk and at night in July 2020 capture a series of projections superimposed onto a 60-foot tall statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, once part of Richmond, Virginia's iconic Monument Avenue. Run by multimedia artist Dustin Klein, the projections feature the faces of recent Black victims of white violence, including Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Christopher DeAndre Mitchell, Deborah Danner, Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Several other photographs were taken by day and include a self-portrait at Stonewall Jackson's grave, and a monument in Tuskegee, Alabama, shrouded in a blue tarp. Includes printed sheet with essay by Diana McClure. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Irving Emery Gray (1897-1980) was chair of the Zoology Department at Duke University and helped establish the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. His interests included marine zoology and ecology, and biological adaptation. The Irving Emery Gray Papers include correspondence, reports, notes, documents, slides, photographs, and other materials about Gray's personal and professional life. Major subjects include the Zoology Department at Duke, marine biology, Arthur Sperry Pearse, and the National Science Foundation. English.

The British Ministry of Food (1939-1955) was established during World War II to administer food rationing and price controls and to provide food and nutrition-related advice to the public. The album was compiled to celebrate the 200th public service advertisement placed in home and women's magazines between Aug. 1945 and May 1948. The Ashantee (also spelled Ashanti) Invasion of Britain's Gold Coast protectorates began in December 1872. British forces responded with their own expedition and invasion of the Ashantee nation in January 1874, resulting in the Battle of Amoaful and the destruction of Kumasi. Materials in this collection consist of bound volumes and printings of reports, dispatches, and correspondence sent to Parliament during the Ashantee (also spelled Ashanti) invasion and the subsequent British expedition into Ashantee lands. Includes initial reports pre-dating the invasion, compilations of correspondence from the commanding officers leading the British forces, transcriptions of communications from the Ashantee king, negotiations regarding the Ashantee surrender, and reports from the Treasury about the cost of the expedition, both monetarily and in terms of British casualties.

The British Patent Office was established in 1852 to analyze, approve, and record patent applications and patent rights. It operated as a division of the Department of Trade and Industry. In 2007 the name changed to the Intellectual Property Office. Collection consists of patent applications received by the British patent office between 1887 and 1904 which appear to have been removed from bound volumes such as "Patents for Inventions." Each application included an attestation from the applicant; a description of the design and function of the innovation; and usually a set of drawings for any mechanisms involved. The bulk of applications originated in Great Britain, but applications were also submitted by American, Australian, Belgian, French, German, and Swedish inventors. Applications address a range of advertising applications (direct mail, newspaper, outdoor, point of sale, postal stationery, retail, matchbooks and other specialty and novelty items, vending machines) that involve innovations relating to display boards and cases; lettering and typography; lighting and projected images; shop window fixtures; and sign construction. Inventors and patent clerks represented in the collection include Alfred Boult; Arnold Fraenkel; Elihu Thomson; Emanuel Spitzer; Frederick Rawson; Frederick Vine; John Frederick Marshall; Levi Yaggy; Richard Henry Brunton; and William Phillips Thompson. Several women inventors are also represented: Allison Bell Lennox; Emily Hand; Florence Chinnery; Josepha Schielle; and Sarah Jane Rollason. Acquired as part of the John W. The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce serves the needs of businesses, non-profits, and government agencies of all sizes by helping to create and sustain a healthy economic climate. The collection largely contains photographs of Durham businesses, homes, schools, places of worship, and individuals. It also includes two bound volumes of meeting minutes, by-laws, and correspondence which date from 1915-1923 as well as material sent to members, such as newsletters.
