The Duke-UNC Center for Research on Women was founded in 1982 as a collaborative endeavor between Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to promote Women's Studies scholarship, research, and curriculum development in the South. The project was originally named the Duke-UNC Women's Studies Research Center, but changed its name to the Duke-UNC Center for Research on Women in 1987. The Center operated with support from the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, smaller grants from local foundations, and institutional backing from Duke and UNC. The records contain correspondence, reports, grant documents, audiotapes, a videotape, and other materials relating to the Center for Research on Women. Major subjects include women's studies curriculum development and research, pay equity, and the relationships between race, class, and gender. Materials range in date from 1982 to 1992. English.

The collection consists of records relating to the academic, faculty, and institutional development of the University, as dealt with through this committee. Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, agendas, proposals, and bound materials comprise this collection. Materials in this collection date from 1962 to 1973.

The University Program in Genetics and Genomics was founded in 1967 and serves as a primary training environment for students at Duke University interested in graduate Genetics and Genomics. This collection includes memoranda, correspondence, publicity material, printed matter and other records.

The University Task Force on Child Care was appointed by President Keith Brodie in 1988 and chaired by Dr. Paula Burger, Vice Provost for Academic Services. It was dissolved in 1990. The collection includes minutes, correspondence, reports, audiocassettes, and printed material documenting the creation and organization of the task force and its study of child care issues at Duke University. It ranges in date from 1985-1990.

The University Writing Program (UWP) promotes the role of writing in the undergraduate curriculum at Duke through three main programs: Writing 20; Writing in the Disciplines (WID); and the Writing Studio. Collection contains student essays from various Writing 20 classes and a clipping about the opening of the Writing Assistance Center in January 1979. Items in the collection range in date from 1997-2007.

The collection documents the records of the office of the Vice Chancellor for Data Processing for the years 1977 through 1982. The bulk of the materials in the collection pertain to the Administrative System Planning Study, a project that studied the effects an automated computing system would have on the accuracy and efficiency of data processing at Duke. Materials include the final project report as well as drafts tracking the development of the project as well as notes and correspondence from members of the project team. The collection also includes interviews the committee conducted with Duke employees across a wide range of departments and external studies of information management at Duke. The Administrative System Planning Study series contains materials related to the report. They include a copy of the final report and several drafts of the report including notes and revisions. This series also contains two 1982 editions of The Chronicle announcing the institution of a new data processing system on campus. The Project Materials series contains meeting minutes from the Administrative System Planning council, papers as well as correspondence and notes from three members of the committee, Vice-Chancellor Mel Ray, Joe Kuran and Jim Prestwood as they worked to develop the project. These materials also include analyses of the research materials used in the report. The Research Materials series includes information the committee gathered while preparing the report. These materials include 15 interviews with employees from many departments about the current data processing environment at Duke. Interviewees included President Terry Sanford, Chancellor A. Kenneth Pye and Provost F. Cleaveland. Research materials also include the final copies of automation reports completed by IBM Corporation and Hay Associates on the existing systems and the potential effects of automation. Also included is a 1980 issue of IBM Corporation’s magazine, Prospectives in Computing featuring an article about the academic applications of computing at Duke.

The Duke University chapter of Volunteers for Youth was established around 1979 and was sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association until the mid-1980s. Contains the records of the Duke University chapter of Volunteer for Youth, a service organization which paired student athletes with at-risk youth. Types of materials include agendas, meeting notes, lists of participants, training materials, handbooks, and newsletters. Major subjects include Duke University students, student athletes, community service, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and Volunteers for Youth. Materials range in date from 1979-1984.

Warwick House was home to undergraduate male students from around 1968 to 1978. Contains the records of Warwick House, a non-selective residence hall for undergraduate men at Duke University. Types of material included are financial summaries, notes, and a small amount of correspondence. Major subjects include student life at Duke University, living groups, and male students. Materials date from 1968 to 1978.

The Woman's College was established at Duke University in 1930, as a coordinate to Trinity College for men. As a coordinate college within Duke University, the Woman's College fostered a community that allowed for shared university faculty, curriculum, and educational facilities, while giving women an opportunity for leadership through their separate student government, social standards committees, and judicial board. It was merged with Trinity College in 1972. The collection includes university administrative records, correspondence, reports, memoranda, minutes, course schedules, statistics, handbooks, newsletters, calendars, financial information, photographs, audio recordings and other materials. Major topics include coordinate education at Duke University, especially administrative and curricular procedures; relationship between the Woman's College and its students (in loco parentis); social standards policies; women's student government; integration of the Woman's College; student health care; and student organizations.

The Woman's College Library dates from the 1927 construction of the Woman's College campus. During the three years required to build the library on West Campus, this was the library for the entire university. In 1930 the Woman's College Library opened officially with a collection of 4,000 books. The collection contains material pertaining to the operations of the Woman's College Library including clippings, correspondence, and periodical subscriptions. The major topic in the collection is art exhibits. Materials date from 1930-1994, bulk 1930-1970.

The Music Study Club was a student organization of the Woman's College. Collection includes constitutions, minutes, programs, correspondence, memorabilia and one screw-bound scrapbook, from the years roughly 1936 to 1954.

The Woman's Student Government Association (WSGA) was formed in 1918, and the organization continued when the Woman's College was incorporated on East Campus in 1930. The WSGA was responsible for the "regulat[ion] of all matters pertaining to the life of the women of the Woman's College of Duke University, not under the jurisdiction of the Faculty." This autonomy along with the segregated campus life style of the coordinate college allowed female students to develop leadership skills and confidence that an integrated student government may not have allowed them to gain. Collection contains minutes, correspondence, reports, printed matter, memos, clippings, and other official records of the WSGA and its committees, along with records of several student organizations and documents generated by the administrations of the Woman's College and Duke University. Materials range in date from 1919-1974.

The Women's Center serves the Duke undergraduate, graduate and professional student communities. The center supports and promotes student women and gender issues on campus. Materials present include subject files, correspondence, memoranda, reports, proposals, surveys, programming records, committee records, flyers, job descriptions, training materials, photographs, slides, videocassettes, and other materials relating to the history and daily operation of the Center.

The Duke University Women's Department of Health and Physical Education began in about 1926 and merged with the Men's Physical Education Department in 1975. The Women's Department was responsible for providing required physical education courses, overseeing recreational and athletic activities, and providing a major in physical education. The Department had three chairmen during its existence: Julia R. Grout, Betty F. McCue, and Elizabeth C. Bookhout. The Women's Department of Health and Physical Education Records include correspondence, reports, brochures, publicity materials, student records, scrapbooks, and photographs. Major topics include the curriculum and administration of the department, student attitudes toward P.E., the attempt to build or renovate the gymnasium facility for women, the eventual merging of the Women's and Men's departments, and the effect of Title IX on women's athletics. The Women's Network began in 1975 when female faculty began meeting in a caucus to discuss issues surrounding "the recruitment, retention, and treatment of faculty women." Later on its focus expanded to include matters of sexual harassment, salary equity, and the dual responsibilities of work and family. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, committee minutes, flyers, reports, clippings, and other materials form the faculty and the staff/administrative divisions of the Women's Network.

The Women's Studies Program at Duke University started in 1983 and grew rapidly into one of the largest interdisciplinary programs at the University, now called Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. The Women's Studies Program Records contain materials related to the foundation, growth, activities, and alumni of the Women's Studies Program.

York House was formed in 1961. Contains the records of York House, an independent living group for upperclassmen and underclassmen, at Duke University. Types of materials include newsletters, financial summaries, constitutions, and miscellaneous notes. Major subjects include residential living at Duke University, student life, alcohol use, and social activities among students. Materials are dated from 1966 to 1979.

This artificial collection primarily documents Washington Duke's financial and philanthropic interests after his retirement from the tobacco industry in 1880 through his correspondence and bound volumes. An additional ledger and account book date from his family's move to downtown Durham in 1874, before the founding of W. Duke, Sons and Company. There is a small amount of legal documents and personal papers, including clippings, genealogical records, and photographic prints.

Lenoir, N.C. residents. Collection consists primarily of letters from Alfred Weimer Dula to his wife Adelaide (Mast) Dula and letters from Harry Stuart Hickman to his wife Elizabeth (Dula) Hickman. Many of the letters deal with experiences during WWII. Alfred Dula was one of the first optometrists in N.C. and wrote to his wife while travelling to small towns. Harry Hickman wrote from Aviation Medical School, San Antonio, Tex. There are other miscellaneous letters to and from various family members, some from abroad. There is one travel diary of a trip from Montreal to points in Europe.

Two bound manuscript volumes written by Count Robert du Mesnil du Buisson including an introduction, maps, photographs, transcriptions, and drawings of inscriptions and carvings found on jars and other fragments at Dura-Europos, in Syria. The volumes are undated but an inserted letter is dated 1959.

Allyson Kay Duncan is a U.S. Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. She is the Fourth Circuit's first female African American judge. This collection consists largely of personal and professional correspondence from Duncan's nomination, induction, and service on the Fourth Circuit, with letters from family, friends, and colleagues across the legal profession. The bulk of the collection dates from the 2000s, but includes some assorted materials from her work as an attorney for Kilpatrick Stockton and the NC Utilities Commission in the 1990s.

In a letter to the New York printer and publisher Justus Starr Redfield, Dunglison writes regarding his biography in "Men of the times" and about the use of burnt sponge in the treatment of goitre. He refers to various people and affairs at the Jefferson Medical College. The treatment of goitre is also the subject of his letter to Henry Randall.

Family with members in both Ripon, Wis., and Ann Arbor, Mich. Collection contains letters and photocopies of letters between family members, naturalization papers; a poem by Helen E. (Richley) Healy; copies of an undated memoir by Gertrude (Clark) Dunlap; an undated chronicle of the early years of James E. Dunlap; several other memoirs, journals and diaries; descriptions of a voyage in an American clipper ship; Civil War letters; genealogies of various families including the Dunlap, Dunlop, Life, Clark, Cooke, and Delamere families; original photographs; and a land deed. The 2007 addition (2007-0168) (600 items; 2.5 lin. ft.; dated 1821-1910 and undated) contains genealogies and family histories of the Dunlap and Life families and biographies of the family members; diaries dated 1865, 1867, 1873-1898, and 1910; autograph books; letters and a scrapbook from the Civil War; daguerreotypes and ambrotypes; and a bayonet presumably from the Civil War. Also included are transcripts of several of the letters and diaries.

Louis Dupree was a scholar, educator, and consultant on the refugees, politics, and archaeology of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He served as a Senior Research Associate for the Program in Islamic and Arabian Development Studies at Duke University during the late 1980s. The Louis Dupree Papers contain correspondence, notes, clippings, conference programs, drafts, manuscripts, speeches, newsletters, interview transcripts, research materials, teaching materials, a scrapbook, photographs, grant applications, memorabilia, student papers, a dissertation, and other materials related to the personal life and professional career of archaeologist, activist, and scholar Louis Dupree. Major subjects include Louis Dupree, Nancy Hatch Dupree, the Duke University Program in Islamic and Arabian Development Studies, Ralph Braibanti, Afghanistan, Afghan refugees, Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, Pakistan, the United States Army 11th Airborne, the United States Army 187th Airborne, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Collection contains postcards acquired at various times by the Rubenstein Library at Duke. Collection is organized into three main categories--International, United States, and Miscellaneous. The International postcards are arranged by country and include cards from France, Italy, Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Spain, and Russia. The collection includes a set of early 20th century postcards from Thessaloniki (also known as Salonica and Selanik), Greece. The United States postcards cover many states, with large numbers from North Carolina and Virginia. The Miscellaneous category contains postcards with different subjects, including modes of transportation, food, tourism, agriculture, wars and battles, heads of state, flowers and plants, advertising, love and friendship, Confederate memorials, poetry, and animals. There are cards intended to be humorous, as well as cards depicting racist stereotypes and caricatures of African American and Native American people. Also included is a series of postcards with images relating to European artists.

Durham Cotton Manufacturing Company founded, 1884 by J. A., J. M., and W. R. Odell, W. H. Branson, and Julian S. Carr. Headquarters in Durham, N.C. Dissolved, 1940. Letterpress copybooks, invoices, cancelled checks, check stubs, receipt books, and invoices and accounts from Joshua L. Baily and Co., Philadelphia brokers who sold goods for the company. Most of the material represents the years 1915-1934. Includes information on fluctuations in cotton prices, export trade in cotton cloth, types of cloth and machinery, freight rates, salaries, workers' medical care, tenement rents, stockholders, dividends, and distribution of excess profits.

Durham County is located in the northeast central North Carolina; it was established in 1881 from lands in Wake and Orange counties. The city of Durham was incorporated in 1866 and then again in 1869. Collection was assembled by library staff, and is arranged in rough chronological order beginning in 1868. Within the chronology, decades are broken down by subject. Formats include correspondence, deeds, leaflets, articles, events programs, booklets, maps, pamphlets, and some photographs. Subjects include: activism, performing arts, business, churches, clubs, courts, education, libraries, historic sites and landmarks, parades, city and county politics, public works, publications, real estate, senior citizens, utilities, Watts Hospital, women's clubs and women's history, preservation of Eno River lands, and the YMCA/YWCA. Materials relating to African Americans in Durham County are found throughout.

Collection comprises letters, bills, time books, ledgers, check stubs, inventories, broadsides, stock certificates, dye house records, and other materials. The bulk of the letters, 1895-1897, date to George M. Graham's service as secretary and treasurer of the Durham Hosiery Company, as do many of the volumes. Topics include machinery and supplies purchased from firms in the North, newly organized textile mills in the South, the installation and repair of machinery, the sale of hosiery, the purchase of yarn, wages offered, and the hiring of laborers.

Margaret Durham was an undergraduate student at Trinity College from 1912-1917. The scrapbook includes personal correspondence, photographs, clippings and assorted mementos of holidays and events held by fraternities and sororities.

The Durham Bicentennial Commission, officially registered as the Durham-County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, was a Durham County, N.C. organization responsible for coordinating and planning events to celebrate the American Bicentennial in 1976. Collection contains materials relating to the various activities sponsored by the Commission, the members of the various committees, financial records in the collection and the participants in the Folklife and Summer Arts festivals held in 1976. The lists of potential participants and actual participants name numerous artists, craftpersons, and musicians. Included also are three oversize maps of the NC Bicentennial Folklife Festival grounds. The official name of the Commission as registered with the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration was The Durham-County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission.

Robert Lee Durham was a star athlete who graduated from Trinity College in 1891. His collection contains correspondence, manuscripts of orations and songs, clippings and other printed materials.

The Durham Savoyards is a Durham (Durham Co.), N.C., production company for Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, founded in 1963 and incorporated in 1964. Collection comprises the archives of this organization and consist of minutes, reports, correspondence, programs, financial records, posters, director's notes, stage design, black-and-white and color photographs, music videocassettes, color slides, and clippings. Includes "The Savoyards, Durham Savoyards Limited, 1989" and "Mindful of the Whys and Wherefores; a Savoyard Producer's Journal" by James L. Parmentier. There are a few photographs that pre-date the founding of the Savoyards in 1963; they feature images of comic operas performed at the Southern Conservatory of Music in Durham.

Community theatre of Durham County, North Carolina. Established in 1947 and disbanded in 1994. The collection includes account books; tax and insurance records; board meeting minutes (dating from 1946-1994); scrapbooks and scrapbook files, arranged alphabetically (dating from 1950-1994); posters and handbills of the Durham Theatre Guild; audio and videocassettes; news clippings and photographs; and various ephemera, including buttons and t-shirts (dating from 1950-1993).

Henry R. Dwire was an alumnus of Trinity College and was appointed Duke University Vice President in 1941 and Director of Public Relations and Alumni Affairs in 1944. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, photographs, certificates and a diploma. The collection ranges in date from 1897-1944.

Approximately 2000 individual zines and nearly 800 titles, most self-published by women and girls 1985-2000. Most were produced in the United States, a few come from Canada and other countries. In-house database with subject access available. Subjects include feminism, riot grrrl, body image and consciousness, sexual abuse, music, mental illness, film, poetry, rock and punk music, comics, violence against women, sexual identity, homosexuality and bisexuality, and erotica. The collection includes four audiocassette tapes and one VHS tape. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection comprises twenty-five 16x20 inch color inkjet prints from a body of work titled "New Beach" by artist Leah Dyjak. The images, taken by Dyjak on the Atlantic coast, show ocean and sand encroaching on and destroying human-made barriers and boundaries - roads, jetties, and groins - with people looking on, stretching out, and strolling the beaches, evoking the nature of human existence at the liminal boundaries of water and land. This work received the 2018 ADA Collection Award for Documentarians of Environmental Change. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Alice Morse Earle (1851-1911) was an American historian and author from Worcester, Massacusetts. Collection comprises two letters written by Earle, along with an unrelated cover addressed to her.

Business and professional correspondence of Pliny Earle, Sr., (1762-1832), inventor and cotton textiles manufacturer, and of Pliny, (1809-1892), physician and alienist, including a few personal letters to Miss Earle. Correspondence addressed to Earle, Sr., touches on politics, patent rights and carding machines. Correspondence addressed to Earle relates to mental illness and the institutional care of the mentally ill. He received letters from physicians, institutional administrators, and philanthropists, including a number of letters of introduction. Items, mostly ALS and 10 addressed envelopes, are arranged in roughly chronological order.

Howard Easley was a psychologist and professor of Education at Duke University from 1930 to 1957. Collection includes correspondence, course materials, manuscripts, lists, printed matter, and other papers concerning the Education Department, parapsychology, educational psychology, testing and related subjects. Correspondence, 1936-1942, with students, colleagues and editors includes copies of 1938 letters between J.B. Rhine and Virginia Harding, mother of purported psychic Faith Harding.
