ALS. Letters to surgeon Valentine Mott, horticulturalist William Robert Prince, to auditor and naturalist William Lee relate to natural history. Papers also include verses from Le Brun dedicated to Mitchill by Francesca Pascalis and a letter to her from her father Felix Pascalis Ouviere. Mitchill also receives a letter of introduction from Roberts Vaux. In 1928 Mary Mayes writes Dr. Braislin regarding the sale of Mitchill papers in her possession.

Papers include correspondence from John Jones, David Jackson and William Duncan, and statements of account with a dentist, physicians and pharmacists, including Andrew Spence, Philip S. Physick, Benjamin Rush, Nicholas Belleville, John Hart, John Ott and William Evans.

Planter and merchant families of New Bern (Craven County), North Carolina. Business and personal correspondence of four generations of the Biddle and Simpson families of New Bern, N.C. Most notable are the papers of John Simpson (1728-1788), locally a prominent Revolutionary figure; his son, Samuel; and his great-grandson, Samuel Simpson Biddle (1811-1872). Topics include financial affairs, including deeds, property in Boston, and the shipment of goods; activities of the Baptist Church in the New Bern area; agricultural and business interests; education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and children's education in the 19th century. Many letters were written during the Civil War and revolve around the activities of S.S. Biddle, Jr. and James W. Biddle, containing brief descriptions of campaigns, troop movements, traitors, fortifications in South Carolina, camp life, and epidemics. The collection also has 12 volumes of plantation and personal accounts, bills, and receipts, loose deeds and notes, as well as information from the estates of Samuel Simpson and William Biddle.

Samuel Simons was a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. Collection contains a letter from Samuel Simons to an unnamed recipient describing the recent election which he narrowly won against a Whig candidate.

Samuel Smith Downey (1792-1851) was an Irish American, plantation owner, and enslaver of Granville County, N.C. The early portion of this collection is made up of the papers of Ephraim Macquillen, a merchant of Richmond, Va., containing letters, bills, and receipts from business firms in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston to which he sold flour and tobacco and from which he bought supplies. The papers of Samuel S. Downey, which also contain the papers of James Webb Alexander, John Granville Smith, Thomas Downey, James Downey, and son-in-law Isaac H. Davis, concern S. S. Downey's administration of the estate of John G. Smith and the many suits involving the estate; management of plantations in Mississippi and North Carolina including correspondence and legal papers dealing with hiring enslaved people to build a railroad from Natchez to Jackson, Miss., in the 1830s; letters from factories in Richmond, Va., concerning Downey's tobacco; and the Civil War letters of Downey's sons, for the most part describing the effects of the war on civilians.

Collection contains largely correspondence received by Samuel Wilberforce relating primarily to missionary activities of the Church of England in East Africa and various British colonies and describing also scenery, local politics, and efforts to thwart the slave trade. Correspondents include John William Colenso, bishop of Natal; Christopher Palmer Rigby, British Army officer in Zanzibar; Charles Frederick Mackenzie, bishop of Central Africa; David Livingstone; Lord John Russell, British foreign secretary; Henry Labouchere, colonial secretary; Walter Chambers, missionary in Sarawak; Thomas Clarkson; Sir James Brooke, rajah of Sarawak; and Sir Samuel White Baker. Also includes some of Wiberforce's routine correspondence regarding appointments, meetings, and casual matters.

Brothers Derrill Sanders (1800-1852), Burrell Sanders (1803-1883), and Benjamin H. Sanders (1805-1890) were born in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, to parents Wilson and Sarah Sanders. The Sanders family owned several small forced labor plantations, including Lifeland (Benjamin) and Beech Hill (Burrell), in and around St. Bartholomew's Parish, Colleton County, South Carolina. This collection dates from 1807-1929 and primarily contains the correspondence and legal and financial papers of Derrill Sanders, Burrell Sanders, and Benjamin Sanders, and of the Sanders family, concerning property transfers, the sale of enslaved persons, plantation management, and family and personal matters.

The Sanford School of Public Policy, originally called the Institute of Policy Sciences and Public Affairs, was established by on July 1, 1971, by then-President of Duke University Terry Sanford. This collection includes administrative records, promotional materials, and event-related materials from the Sanford School of Public Policy.

Collection includes black and white photographs of clothing, department, furniture, grocery, hardware, household appliance, music and musical instrument, shoe and other retail store window displays, signs and interior merchandise displays of businesses in the San Jose, California area. Photographs also depict clerks and store employees at work as well as storefront street scenes. Companies represented include Albers, Armour Star, Bauer & Black, Best Foods, Hart Schaffner & Marx, Montgomery Ward, Pacific Gas, Standard Oil (Calol, Pearl Oil, Red Cross gasoline, Zerolene Oil), Sunkist, Vellumoid and Victor records. Collection includes black-and-white photographs, photograph holders, and promotional campaign instructions, map, and personnel lists that document the Kiddie Kandids' "Santa and Me!" seasonal campaign at the May department store and other locations. The primary focus is on Christmas, but the collection also depicts children's portraits with settings that include Alice in Wonderland and circus clowns. Acquired as part of the John W. Sarabande Books is a non-profit literary press publishing poetry and fiction. The Sarabande Books records include materials documenting the founding of the company as well as yearly publishing materials.

Sarah Wallis Bowdich Lee was an English naturalist, author, and illustrator. This collection consists of an untitled, apparently unpublished, 1830s manuscript (439 pages) surveying the African continent and discussing African exploration, history, geography, and culture from a white British colonialist perspective.

Sarah Brown Capron was born in Lanesboro, Massachusetts, in 1828, the daughter of Henry Brown Hooker and Martha (Chickering) Hooker. The family subsequently moved to Falmouth, Massachusetts. Sarah graduated from Wheaton Seminary, and married William Capron on October 1, 1856. Over the course of their marriage, the Caprons had 3 children. On November 24, 1856, the Caprons sailed to Ceylon, India, as missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission. Arriving in Madras in March of 1857, they labored in Tirupuvanum and Mana Madura for the next sixteen years. Collection comprises a copy of a letter (10 pages) written by Sarah B. Capron in Mana Madura, India, to unidentified recipients on 1865 December 26 and 28.

Sarah Christianson is a photographer originally from North Dakota. This portfolio of 30 11x14 inch color chromogenic prints is from her project, "When the Landscape is Quiet Again: North Dakota's Oil Boom," which won the 2015 Archives of Documentary Art Award for Women Documentarians. Since 2012, Christianson has been documenting through her photographs the legacy of oil booms and busts in North Dakota and how the region's agrarian landscape and environment is changing again today, due to horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Approximately 2000 individual zines and nearly 800 titles, most self-published by women and girls 1985-2000. Most were produced in the United States, a few come from Canada and other countries. In-house database with subject access available. Subjects include feminism, riot grrrl, body image and consciousness, sexual abuse, music, mental illness, film, poetry, rock and punk music, comics, violence against women, sexual identity, homosexuality and bisexuality, and erotica. The collection includes four audiocassette tapes and one VHS tape. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Resident of South Berwick, Maine. The centerpiece of this collection is a late 19th century scrapbook belonging to Sarah E. Goodwin of Maine, into which manuscript and printed instructions and patterns for the creation of tapestries, collars, edging, capes, mittens, afghans, hoods, curtains, infant shoes, slippers, and other items were pasted and pinned. Collection also includes a commonplace book of knitting and crocheting patterns, home remedies for illnesses and diseases, and a variety of household tips, as well as poems, literary quotations, and miscellaneous lists of information; as well as a catalog for a Baptist church in South Berwick, Maine (1898), numerous patterns for embroidered monograms, and many loose patterns. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Mary Cary Packard (1858-1936) and Sarah F. (Florence) Martin (1864- ) were professional nurses trained Boston and based in Baltimore from 1887, where they managed the Robert Garrett Hospital for Children as well as the Robert Garret Sanitarium for Children in rural Mount Airy, Maryland. Collection comprises a 109-page manuscript memoir of Mary Packard's life, assembled by Sarah F. Martin around 1936, and a 20-page handwritten autobiography by Martin, 1940, wih a few photographs and booklets pasted in. The Packard memoir contains a detailed biography, 34 photographs, clippings, memorabilia, cards, and letters, all captioned in detail by Martin. The collection documents the lifelong friendship and professional lives of the two women, their family, friends and colleagues, and their Baltimore home, "Clovelly." Other topics include the history of Maryland's public health system and children's hospitals, and the genealogies of the Alden, Cary, Packard, and Parker families of eastern Massachusetts. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collection and the Bingham Center for Women and Women's History and Culture at Duke University.

Sara Grand was a pseudonym for author and feminist Frances Elizabeth Bellenden Clarke (1854-1943), of Great Britain. Includes a signed statement and a letter, both written from Tunbridge Wells.

Collection contain images related to two photography projects by Sarah Hoskins. The Homeplace series contains 250 11x14 inch silver gelatin prints documenting Hoskins' visits and relationships with rural African American communities in Kentucky, originally established by freedmen in the 19th century. Her photographs include community events and activities such as hog butchering, church services, family reunions, and gatherings of charity groups. The Rosenwald Schools series contains approximately 300 color digital images of schools for African Americans built during the first half of the 20th century through the Rosenwald foundation, as well as some portraits of former students in Kentucky, North Carolina and Alabama. The series also includes images of a Rosenwald foundation-funded apartment building in Chicago, Illinois. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Collection comprises a diary (49 pages) Sarah Ewing maintained in ink, focusing on the domestic abuse she suffered from her husband, including verbal and physical abuse. One entry also records her husband's arrest for an assault that took place outside the home. By the end of the diary, Sarah has left her husband in fear for her safety, taking with her the baby. After visiting the house in order to retrieve more clothing, she ends the diary with a note that she is not a thief, "I had never in my life before removed or taken away from H.H. [Haydon House] any articles of clothing or jewelry of any sort." Marginal notes made by an unidentified writer in pencil indicate that the diary may have been used in legal or other proceedings on her behalf.

Collection comprises a letter from the 19th century writer and editor Sarah J. Hale to the prominent Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey thanking him for his contribution to Hale's charity benefiting Boston seamen.

Virginia-based writer Sarah Maitland began producing zines around 2001 and ran a zine distro for about three years. She was a founder of the Richmond Zine Fest which started in 2007. Approximately 220 titles from Sarah Maitland's personal zine collection, most dating between 1998 and 2008 and discussing a wide range of subjects. Also contains some material from Maitland's personal projects, as well as buttons, cassettes, stickers, and other ephemera.

The Sarah Orne Jewett letters consist of two pieces of correspondence written by the author to an editor, Mr. Sawyer, and to Lucy Coffin. Sarah Orne Jewett was a well-known 19th century author whose fiction is set in her native rural Maine. In the first letter, Jewett declines to send Mr. Sawyer anything to print in the first issue of his magazine, as she has been ill and busy, and doesn't want to write something in a hurry, although she wishes him well with his new publication. The second is a condolence letter to Lucy Coffin of Newbury, Massachusetts on the loss of her father. The Coffins were a prominent Massachusetts family.

The Sarah P. Duke Gardens Reference Collection contains files of clippings, brochures, maps, history of the gardens, symposium and promotional packets, and other material concerning the Duke Gardens.

The Gardens were a gift from Mary Duke Biddle in honor of her mother, Sarah P. Duke (Mrs. Benjamin N.). Construction began in 1932 and the site was open to the public in 1934. Ellen Shipman (1869-1950) designed the plans for both the construction and the plantings for the new gardens. Collection contains materials pertaining to the origins and activities of the Sarah P. Duke Gardens including planting plans, calendars, correspondence, feasibility studies, annual reports, a card catalog of plantings, and publicity. Materials in the collection date from 1926-2012.

Collection contains a letter from Sarah R. L. Williams (1889 April 19) to Frank D. Andrews, regarding his requests for autograph letters. She mentions her "constitutional dread of bringing up the diverse memories which are inseparable from the handling of files of old letters." With envelope.

Collection comprises a receipt for the support of Sarah Teidwell's "idiot child" for thirteen weeks in 1823 in Washington County.

Sarah Wood was the co-owner of GERLL Press, a zine distro based in Chicago, Ill., in the early to mid-1990s. The collection consists of about 150 zines self-published by women and girls, largely in the United States. Subjects include feminism, the riot grrrl movement, body image and consciousness, women's health, women athletes, sexual abuse, television and film, poetry and short stories, rock music and punk music, violence against women, sexual identity, homosexuality, and bisexuality. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Sara M. Evans is a Regents Professor Emeritus in the history department at the University of Minnesota. She specializes in American social and women's history of the 20th century. Collection consists of subject files, course materials, research files, publication materials, lectures, correspondence, project documentation, student course work and student activist work accumulated by Evans during her career as first a student, then a professor and historian, of women's history. Topics include feminism, minority women, religion, violence, civil rights, labor activism at Duke University, lesbianism, motherhood, feminist theology, employment, socialist feminism, Christian feminism, National Organization for Women, Organization of American Historians, and student activism. Collection contains materials used in the preparation of her publications, including Personal Politics. There are also lectures, academic correspondence, and administrative materials from her tenure at the University of Minnesota. Audiocassette tapes from a series of interviews conducted by Evans in her research for Personal Politics, as well as a slide show from a feminist organization are also included. Originals of the audio cassette tapes are closed to use. Patrons must request use copies to access the content of this material. Sauer, Farrell, & Co. was a cigar manufacturing company located in Suffield, Connecticut, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Collection of ledgers, account books, order forms, and other ephemera relating to the sale and purchase of cigars by Sauer, Farrell, & Co., Cigar Manufacturers. Materials range in date from the 1870s through the early 1900s, and it is believed that the cigar company may have changed names throughout that period. The centerpiece of the collection is a specimen book of sample cigar box labels, created by the lithographers Heppenheimer & Maurer around 1878. The specimen book includes about 115 leaves, with labels affixed on each side of the leaf; the label colors range from two colors to multiple colors per label. Account books document cigar production, purchase, and sales information. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

This collection contains the official papers of the Port of Savannah, Georgia, in the Governmental Coastal District of Savannah. They are papers of ship clearance, cargo lists, Treasury Department letters and similar papers which deal with the customs operations at the port from 1820 to 1920. Although the papers mainly consist of cargo manifests, there are also letters, legal documents, literary pieces, and other miscellaneous items. Several of the items deal with slavery in Savannah and there are occasional mentions of piracy, smuggling, and general misdeeds among the seamen.

Family based in Mt. Gilead, Montgomery County, North Carolina; relatives were located in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. Related family names include Clarke, McLeod, Nash, and Smart. Correspondence, legal and financial papers, and other materials dating from the 1700s to the 1940s, relating to the Scarborough family based in Mt. Gilead, Montgomery County, N.C. Papers document rural life in N.C., cotton and tobacco farming, mercantile activities, and the experiences of family members in the Civil War and World War I, and their careers as teachers, local officials, and members of the Republican Party in the 20th century. Includes many letters from friends and relatives who migrated to other Southern states. Bound volumes include account books, court dockets, a scrapbook, a family history, and public school district registers. There are a few items referring to slaves, including two lists of slave names, most likely from N.C. Over 100 Civil War letters were exchanged between family members at home and relatives and friends serving as Confederate soldiers in N.C. locations such as High Point (Camp Fisher), Greenville, Raleigh (Camp Mangum), Tarboro, and Wilmington; Petersburg, Virginia; and Camp Winder and Jackson Hospitals in Virginia. The letters refer to battles, troop movements, camp life, the status of various individuals both at home and abroad, prices of commodities and produce, and life in home towns such as Mt. Gilead, NC, and Bruceville and Warrior Stand, Alabama.

The College of Engineering was established in 1939. It became the School of Engineering in 1966, later renamed the Pratt School of Engineering in 1999. It is composed of four departments: Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. This collection includes records of the departments, the Engineering Student Government, and the Engineering Alumni Association. Type of materials include biographical files, general subject files, correspondence, photographs, clippings, rosters, minutes, reports, proposals, course descriptions, memoirs, honors, and vitae. Major subjects include Duke University, students, School of Engineering, the study and teaching of science and engineering, and scientific research.

The Pratt School of Engineering traces its history back to 1851 when Normal College, a forerunner of Duke University, advertised a Classical course which included engineering for seniors. The School of Engineering Reference Collection contains files of clippings, articles, bulletins, reports, publications, and other materials about the School of Engineering.

In 1938, the School of Forestry at Duke was founded as the first graduate school of forestry in the South. In the 1970s, the school expanded its program to include a broad range of resource and environmental studies. In 1974/75, it became the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Collection contains memoranda, brochures, newspaper clippings, conference materials, annual reports, photographs and slides relating to the Duke School of Forestry and Environmental Studies from roughly 1960 through 1979.

The School of Law dates its origins as far back as 1850. The school experienced many organizational changes and several temporary closures in its early years before re-establishing itself as the School of Law in 1904. This collection includes papers of deans of the law school in 1930 and continuing forward. Also included are materials related to the law school's publications, the Duke Bar Association, legal research centers, the law library, Richard Nixon's time as a student at the law school and general administrative files dating back to 1914.

Schulte-United was a chain of variety/department stores that began by David A. Schulte in New York, in operation primarily in the northeast United States from 1928-1954. Collection includes correspondence, design sketches, awards, and black-and-white photographs of store fixtures, merchandise display cases, and show window display designs. Collection includes photographs produced in Auburn and Peekskill, N.Y., Passaic, N.J., and Zanesville, Ohio. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The Science, Technology and Human Values program (STHV), formerly known as the Science, Society, and Human Values Program, was begun in 1979 by James F. Gifford and Seymour Mauskopf as a unique interdisciplinary program focused on developing a comprehensive view of science, medicine, and technology in social, historical, and ethical terms. The collection contains director's files from 1979-1984 which include administrative and student correspondence, memoranda, student term papers, course syllabi and evaluations, and five cassette tapes of sessions at a STHV symposium on space travel. The collection also contains brochures for the Round Table on Science and Public Affairs, dated 1976-1983.

William H. Scovill (1796-1854) of Waterbury, Connecticut, businessman and founder of the Scovill Manufacturing Company; and Rebecca Beecher (1800-1876), of Kent, Connecticut. The collection includes twenty-nine letters, chiefly the courting letters of William H. Scovill and Rebecca Beecher during a long period of geographic separation and secret engagement from 1817 to 1820. Materials in the collection range in date from 1816 to 1864.
