Alpha Epsilon Phi is a social sorority for undergraduate women. The Duke University chapter was established in 1934 and disbanded in the mid-1960s. The sorority was revived at Duke in 1977, with the establishment of the Alpha Epsilon chapter; it disbanded in 2004. John Wesley Alspaugh was a lawyer, editor, and civic leader in Winston-Salem, N.C. A key supporter of Trinity College (Randolph County, N.C), he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and as a member of the Committee of Management, which ran the school from 1884 to 1887. Papers contain letters from J. S. Carr and J. A. Gray concerning the uncertain financial state of Trinity College (Randolph County, N.C.). Also included are claims, letters of recommendation, a student petition regarding food vendors, and reports of the Committee of Management. English.

The Roland Alston family was an African American family residing in Durham, NC. William Roland Alston Sr., known as "Roland," became the head gardener for Mary Duke Biddle at Pinecrest then Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans at Les Terraces. This collection contains eight oral history interviews with Roland and ten photographs of his family.

The photographs and papers of documentarian Rob Amberg span the years 1975-2009. The gelatin silver prints and pigmented inkjet color prints in the collection represent three bodies of work: The New Road: I-26 and the Footprints of Progress; The Sodom Laurel Album; and The Vanishing Culture of Agriculture. Amberg focuses primarily on the social life and customs of the rural South, especially in the mountains of his home state of North Carolina. Images range from landscape shots taken before and during construction of an interstate highway in the N.C. mountains, to portraits of individuals and families affected by the changes in rural culture. Images also depict agricultural activies such as tobacco cultivation and dairy cattle farming, as well as work in the poultry industry. He has a special concern for documenting the way in which industrial and economic progress seems to be erasing many aspects of rural culture at the turn of the twenty-first century. Amberg's papers account for the rest of the collection and are organized into five series: Correspondence, Printed Materials, Subject Files, and Writings and Research, and Audio. American Assembly is a national, non-partisan public affairs forum illuminating issues of public policy by commissioning research and publications, sponsoring meetings, and issuing reports, books, and other literature. It was founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1950. The American Assembly sponsored southeastern regional meetings at Duke University from 1957 to 1961. Records include correspondence, printed matter, press releases, programs, agendas, reports, and other materials concerning the assemblies held at Duke University. Correspondents include Benjamin Ratchford, Lloyd Saville, and A. Hollis Edens. Major subjects include monetary policy and national goals. English.

The American Association of Advertising Agencies, founded in 1917, is the primary advertising industry trade organization. Collection includes correspondence, annual corporate and stockholder reports for member agencies, meeting minutes and speeches, biographical summaries, a subject file, and videotapes that document selected activities and functions of the organization. The collection has been compiled from a number of accessions received over time, and so does not represent a comprehensive archive of the AAAA. Certain aspects of AAAA activities, however, are well represented, including a set of card files that document the professional careers of AAAA members over a 50-year period, and subject files that focus on Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigations into complaints lodged against advertisers and advertising claims produced in a variety of media, with a particular emphasis on the ways that products were advertised during and in conjunction with children's television programming. Other topics touched on include advertising self-regulation, antitrust issues, advertising laws, and deceptive and ethical practices in marketing and advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. The purpose of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. The collection includes correspondence, reports, proceedings, memoranda, and other materials of the American Association of University Professors from the period when Duke University faculty member William T. Laprade was chairman of its Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure (1937-1942, 1948-1953), and president (1942-1943). A sample of the folders shows material concerning academic freedom cases, dismissals, quality of educational support and other matters of concern to the organization's membership. English.

The Durham, N.C. branch of the American Association of University Women was founded in 1913. The records of the AAUW Durham chapter span the years from its founding in 1913 through the 1960s. The central organizational records are almost complete for this period, including minutes of Executive Board meetings, Presidents' files, financial records, membership information, and national and state convention files. The Presidents' files contain chiefly correspondence, but programs, membership rosters, and leadership information are also present. Records are arranged alphabetically by file groups.

The American Catalin Corporation was founded in New York, N.Y., in 1927; it developed the light-colored, transparent, filler-free Bakelite resin in a wide range of colors. Bakelite is the first synthetic plastic, developed by Dr. Leo Baekeland between 1907 and 1909. American Catalin Corporation used its form of the resin for costume jewelry, fashion accessories, radios, and other products. By 1942, the company suspended its manufacture of jewelry and cast items to concentrate on wartime production. After the war, petroleum-based plastics gained favor. Collection comprises a salesman's sample book in a black leather album used to provide a visual guide for the company's products. The album contains primarily 34 black-and-white 8x10 photographs (8 photographs are laid in, all but two are linen backed, those not laid-in are stamped on the back with "Johnston & Tunick Commercial Photographers"), as well as 17 typeset pages containing inter-office memos, sales tips, information regarding the company's competition, and customer testimonials. Several of the memos are written to the attention of D. J. Kelly, who was the salesman for whom the sample book was prepared. There is also a two-page key to the main group of 19 photographs, identifying the Bakelite products in each photograph, as well as the item's final producer. Seven of the laid-in photographs show the corporation's factory, including three of factory workers on the job. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro (CHC) Civil Liberties Union was established as a chapter of the North Carolina Civil Liberties Union (NCCLU, now known as ALCU of NC) in September 1971. Its activities have focused on fundraising efforts, education, and outreach related to civil liberties particularly, freedom of speech, separation of church and state, gun control, voting, drug testing, and other issues. Collection contains administrative materials created and collected by the Board of Directors and include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, financial statements, fundraising and event files, policy guides, briefs, clippings, and other assorted materials spanning 1967-1996. Also included is the newsletter Civil Liberties News, later called Liberty, that provides an overview of activities from different state chapters including the CHC chapter. Topics include but are not limited to Freedom Fair and the annual Brazilian-style Carnaval for fundraising, public forums and meetings on civil liberties issues, student essay contests, Bill of Rights Day, and the Charles and Dorcas Jones award. North Carolina affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, founded in 1965 and based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The records of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU of NC or ACLU-NC) date mainly from the 1960s-2010s and is ongoing. The collection is organized into the following series: ACLU Historical Files, Executive Director Office Files, Legal Program, Audiovisual Material, Print Material, Accession 2013-0209, Web Content, and Accession 2025-0020. Many files focus on the investigation and prosecution of cases related to civil rights, public education relating to civil liberties, and lobbying for civil liberties and human rights. Materials include correspondence files from the Executive Director's office and other unions in the ACLU of NC; thousands of case files; administrative files on cases, operations, and attorney's activities; lobbying and subject files; and printed materials and other records relating to organizational publications, outreach, and public education activities. There are also some audiovisual materials and electronic files including educational videos, ACLU of NC's website, and social media pages. Topics include civil rights and legal status of legally under-represented groups such as juveniles and high school students, incarcerated persons; LGBTQ+ people, and immigrants; education and academic freedoms; religious freedom and separation of church and state; freedom of expression (including desecration of the flag); racial inequalities and injustices; reproductive rights; women's rights; police misconduct and the legality of search procedures; drug testing and the decriminalization of drugs; voting rights, including issues surrounding reapportionment; and worker's rights, including unionization. Some files in the collection are on the Ku Klux Klan, Confederate displays, and right-wing organizations. Many of these issues span decades of ACLU involvement. Researchers consulting case files and any other materials should be aware of privacy laws that govern the publication and use of these records. Collection consists of a set of sixty-six commercially produced, hand-colored lantern slides, featuring photographic images taken in the early 20th century in areas of modern-day Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Also includes an original list of titles and a slide projector. The slides were sold in sets by the American Colony Stores, the commercial department of a missionary community based in Jerusalem. The landscapes and scenes were intended to illustrate biblical sites, or to remind the viewer of well-known biblical passages, but a few also depict other types of archaeological sites. The slides measure 4 x 3.5 inches. Locations include but are not limited to: the city of Jaffa (Tel Aviv); Sea of Galilee; Jerusalem; Bethlehem; Mount of Temptation (identified with Mount Quarantania); Jericho; Jordan River; Mount Hermon; Bethsaida; Mount of Olives; Emmaus (El- Kubebeh); the mosaic floor at Beit Jibrin; River Abana (El-Barada); Tyre; and the Temple of Sethos. There are also two glass slides with maps of ancient Middle East and Palestine. Five of the slides are damaged and are filed at the end of the collection. Free to Dance: The African-American Presence in Modern Dance was a three-part television documentary co-produced by the American Dance Festival and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in association with Thirteen/WNET New York. The series aired on PBS' Great Performances: Dance in America in 2001. It chronicled the role of African-American choreographers and dancers in the development of modern dance as an American art form. The collection includes film, video, sound recordings, oral histories, interview transcripts, business records, photographs, clippings, and research materials created or collected during the production of the three-part television documentary Free to Dance.

The American Economic Association (AEA) is the primary professional association for economists in the US. This collection documents the activities of the organization, especially their journals, and including the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession. It forms part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

The American Newspaper Repository was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in order to save a unique collection of original newspapers that would otherwise have been destroyed or dispersed, and to preserve and make available these landmarks of American publishing. Nicholson Baker, author of numerous fiction and nonfiction works, including writings on libraries, founded and served as director of the Repository in conjunction with research for his 2001 release, Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper. The collection consists of approximately five thousand newspaper volumes (plus several thousand unbound newspapers), most of which came, directly or indirectly, from the British Library. There are long runs of major domestic newspapers as well as many foreign language and immigrant papers, such as the Yiddish Forward, the Irish World, and the Greek Atlantis, trade journals, Communist papers such as the Daily Worker, and other political papers. Many of these runs apparently exist nowhere else in the original format.

Video recording consists of a slide show of still images chiefly taken at annual meetings of the American Ophthalmological Society, most of which were and still are held at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia. Though the series begins with historical images, the first of which is a panoramic print of the 1919 conference attendees, most date from the 1950s through 1993, and are mostly in color. Subjects typically include scenes from the meetings, candid portraits of individuals attending the meeting and enjoying recreational activities, and the locations and grounds where the meetings were held. A credit line bears the name M. N. Luxenberg, Malcom (Mike) N. Luxenberg, ophthalmologist in Augusta, Georgia, Past President of AOS, and Professor and Chair for Ophthalmology for Augusta University. The American Revolution Bicentennial Administrstion was created by Congress in 1974 to encourage and coordinate local events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Collection includes copies of ARBA administrative materials.

The Duke University chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is an academic group for Engineering students at Duke University, formed in 1932. Records contain correspondence, annual reports, meeting announcements, planning materials for the Engineers Show, a newsletter, minutes, membership lists, membership certificates, photographs, and clippings. Major subjects include the American Society of Civil Engineers, Duke University, the School of Engineering, civil engineering study and teaching, professional development, student societies, and the history of civil engineering. Materials range in date from 1932 to 1983 (bulk 1944-1970). English.

Collection houses archives of the American Society of Papyrologists, including the Society's constitution, financial papers, correspondence, Director's Office files, memoranda, and other administrative files, spanning the years 1977-1993.

Tobacco and cigarette manufacturing firm headquartered in New York, N.Y. Consists of 7-page annual letter from American Tobacco Company President George W. Hill to Stockholders. Letter summarizes success of Lucky Strike brand over the year and praises the value of advertising. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection comprises an pin with the text "American Women's Voluntary Services" on a background of red, white, and blue enamel. The back of the pin is marked "Bastian Brothers Co, Rochester, N.Y."

Collection comprises five brief essays Amerine wrote to attack advances in Civil Rights made during the 1950s, noting that members of the white race were becoming second-class citizens because of the legislative work of the federal government and the Supreme Court, along with 3 letters supporting his writing. Other topics include Christianity, Communism, and foreign aid. There are two versions of "An Essay on Crackpotism." The majority of the essays feature manuscript corrections made in ink. There are also three letters written to Amerine, dated 1960 and written by local officials who endorsed his manuscript, THE FORCES OF DARKNESS, including Judge Walter P. Jones of the 15th Judicial Circuit of Alabama; MacDonald Gallion, State Attorney General; and George Platt Waller, a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. Copies of these three letters have been attached the longer version of "An Essay on Crackpotism." One essay has a mailing envelope attached. Several of the items have been stamped with messages such as "Remember Little Rock," or "Warning! This book should be left to our posterity. Thousands of children are even now being led astray. The Reds are back of it."

Author and professor of American literature at Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. The Charles Roberts Anderson Papers span the dates 1806-1993 and document his active career as professor of American literature at Duke University and Johns Hopkins University. Included are research materials on the intellectual life of Charleston, S.C., and on American literary figures such as Paul Hamilton Hayne, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, Sidney Lanier (to whom Anderson was related), Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and others. Additional material includes correspondence and files on Anderson's publications; lectures and files related to teaching; travel diaries and keepsakes; and other papers related to his family history and academic career. Copies of correspondence and other documents by Anderson's research subjects, particularly Hayne, detail elements of life in the South in the nineteenth century. In addition, material in this collection chronicles the academic life of Anderson and provides insight into the state of literary scholarship and publishing in the mid-twentieth century. Early dates usually reflect the dates of the content of original material photocopied by Anderson in the course of his research. Acquired as part of the Jay B. Durham-based photographer specializing in editorial and documentary photography. Collection contains 16 11x14 color digital photographs produced by Derek Anderson for his project "When the Dust Settles: A photographic survey of the former Liggett & Myers tobacco factory in Durham, NC." Photographs include captions and range in date from 2006 to 2008.

Desmond Frances Anderson was Lt. Col. of the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in 1927, serving in China and India until 1930. The Desmond F. Anderson diaries comprise 4 volumes (approximately 650 pages) of corrected typescript, accompanied by maps, sketches, postcards, photo postcards, and a few printed items tipped in, all detailing Anderson's service in China and India between 1927 and 1930.

James W. Anderson (1931-2019) was a professor of public relations at the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications. Collection includes manuals on corporate identity, graphic design, image management, and public relations policies and standards; audiocassettes; printed materials on issues in public relations, corporate image and trademarks; course materials; correspondence; slides and scripts of student presentations. Jay Carl Anderson was a Duke University student from 1974 to 1978 and freelance photographer who photographed Duke scenes and athletic events as well as politicians and scenes around Durham and North Carolina. He also served as the editor of the 1978 Chanticleer (Duke University's yearbook). The Jay Carl Anderson Photographs and Papers include images of Anderson's time at Duke, particularly images of East and West campus, athletic events (particularly Duke men's basketball), and Duke students. The collection also includes images of United States Presidents and Presidential Campaigns (particularly Jimmy Carter and the 1976 Democratic National Convention), as well as scenes around Durham, and locations inside and outside of North Carolina.

Jay C. Anderson (1956-2013) was the photographer for the American Dance Festival from 1978 to 1994. This collection contains documents, slides, negatives, and prints pertaining to ADF performances and student classes during Jay Anderson's tenure as photographer for the American Dance Festival.

Parker Anderson (1964-) is an author of nonfiction and dramatic works on Arizona history. The Parker Anderson collection of conspiracy theory research consists of materials documenting the diffusion of conspiracy theories by right-wing populist publishers and personalities in the United States since the 1960s, with emphasis on the period between the late 1980s and the early 2000s. The dominant focus is on "new world order" conspiracy theories informed by strands of evangelicalism, antisemitism, white supremacy, Catholicism, constitutionalism, and libertarianism. The majority of the collection consists of conspiracy theory literature produced in varied formats: books; booklets; pamphlets; serial publications; mail catalogs and promotional ephemera; films and other video recordings on VHS and DVD; audio recordings of lectures and speeches on cassette and CD; and web publications. The remainder of the collection is composed mainly of articles drawn from newspapers, magazines, and websites.

Vincenzo Andrei was a professor at the Royal Institute of Music in Florence. Collection comprises a manuscript volume (133 pages) containing Vincenzo Andrei's "Robespierre. Dramma in 5 quadri. Epoca dal 1789 al 1793," handwritten in Italian. The volume is dedicated to (Costantino?) Ressman, an Italian ambassador.

Protestant Episcopal clergyman, Shepherdstown, W. Va. Correspondence, journal (in letter form) of travels in Europe and the Near East in the 1840s, and other papers relating to church affairs, to the American Colonization Society, to conditions in Virginia before, during, and after the Civil War, and to such schools as the Episcopal High School and the Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Va., Woodberry Forest School, Orange, Va., Washington College (now Washington and Lee), Va., Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, and others. Jesse Pyrant Andrews is an American photographer based in rural southern Virginia. Collection comprises 310 black-and-white photographs and 50 oral history interviews by photographer Jesse Pyrant Andrews, documenting rural and small-town life in the Piedmont region of Virginia and North Carolina. Major themes center on the landscapes and people of the region; tobacco cultivation; the lives of farmers, war veterans, small business owners, and laid-off workers; local architecture and historic sites; traditional crafts and music; and new patterns of economics and society in rural Virginia. Andrews's Veterans Project has become a larger focus over the years; it now comprises over 30 portraits and associated audio interviews, chiefly with veterans of the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. Additional projects include materials related to the Carter-Wooding families of southern Virginia; views from an Amtrak train; views of an historic plantation home, Mountainview; and street scenes and portraits taken in New York City, California, and Massachusetts. The Angier B. Duke Memorial was established in 1925 by Benjamin N. Duke to honor his son Angier Buchanan Duke (1884-1923; Trinity, 1905). The program was reworked in 1946-1947 when the Memorial Scholarship became the University's premier undergraduate award. This collection contains annual reports of various committees, correspondence and memoranda, studies, proposals, and financial records. A majority pertains to loans, awards, and scholarships funded by the Angier B. Duke Memorial.

Collection of black and white glossy photographic prints of Afghanistan, taken by an anonymous photographer during the Anglo-Afghan War most likely during the Mamund Valley hostilities of 1897. Prints are mounted on cardstock, and collection includes the portfolio in which they were originally housed. Most have captions with location or subject, either typed or hand-written; a few are dated 1897. Images feature British Army military camps, landscapes, and groups of officers. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Real estate and travel company founded in 1932 by brothers Herman and Robert Anspach in Highland Park, Ill. Currently part of Valerie Wilson Travel, Inc. Collection spans 1936-2014 with the bulk of materials dating from the 1960s-1980s. Primarily brochures, leaflets and other take-away direct marketing materials advertising resorts, hotels, airlines, cruise lines, and other services and destinations comprising the travel and tourism industry. Anthony family of Burlington (Guilford Co.), N.C. Collection primarily comprises 32 albumen photographs and one tintype (circa 1861-1954 and undated), most of which are accompanied by identifying information and feature formal portraits. Nineteen of the photographs represent Newlin or Anthony family members. Among the other thirteen, five are images of the Letterboat, Perry, and Holt families; four are unidentified images of World War I soldiers, possibly associates of Joseph Jonathan Newlin; and one is a print of evangelist "Cyclone Mac." The tintype is of an unidentified Confederate soldier, possibly James Rieh, whose letter of 12 May 1861 is in the collection. Other materials include John Anthony's bank account book (1906-1907); his personal account book (1892-1922), with entries for housekeeping and farm expenses and income; and a commonplace book for M. G. Newell (1938?). In addition, there are a few letters (1910-1958), clippings (1950-1974), and printed materials (1922-1961).

Collection comprises a letter Susan B. Anthony composed to "Friend Campbell" (Cornelius Bowman Campbell), discussing arrangements for her and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to meet with him and outlining potential discussion of "our political proclivities." Written on letterhead for THE REVOLUTION.
