Annabel Jane Wharton papers, 1961-2008 and undated 17 Linear Feet

Annabel Jane Wharton is the William B. Hamilton Professor of Art and Art History in Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. Her initial area of research was Late Ancient and Byzantine art and culture. The collection contains photographs, notes, and travel ephemera from research trips she took to sites in Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and other countries in West Asia. More recent research interests include the effects of modernity on ancient landscapes. Included in the collection are contains diaries kept by Wharton beginning in the late 1960s until 2008.

Anna Halprin papers, 1957-1995 1.33 Linear Feet

Anna Halprin (b. 1920) is a pioneering dancer and choreographer of the post-modern dance movement. She founded the San Francisco Dancer's Workshop in 1955 as a center for movement training, artistic experimentation, and public participatory events open to the local community. Halprin has created 150 full-length dance theater works and is the recipient of numerous awards including the 1997 Samuel H. Scripps Award for Lifetime Achievement in Modern Dance from the American Dance Festival. Her students include Meredith Monk, Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer, Simone Forti, Ruth Emmerson, Sally Gross, and many others. Collection includes books, magazines, photographic prints, clippings, flyers, written correspondence, programs, essays, and other printed materials.

Anna Jean and Lillian Snowden were two Black women born in Lexington, K.Y. Anna Jean became a teacher, and Lillian became an accountant and important figure in the Indepedent Order of St. Luke. Anna Julia Cooper papers, 1934-1951 0.1 Linear Feet (13 items)

Anna Julia Cooper was an American author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black Liberation activist, and one of the most prominent African-American scholars in United States history. Collection comprises 9 items from and to Anna Julia Cooper regarding the disposition and placement of the Charlotte Forten Grimke diaries and her desire to bring all five of Grimke's diaries into a single repository. Cooper was likely Grimke's literary executor and was trying to obtain three of five diaries from the possession of Prof. Ray A. Billington, professor of history at Smith College and Northwestern University. Billington tried to convince Copper to place all five diaries in one place (either the Library of Congress or Howard University). Billington also corresponded with Dorothy Porter, head of the negro collection at Howard University, and Rayford Logan, professor of history at Howard University, to inform them of his attempts to persuade Cooper to place the diaries there. Cooper eventually decided Howard University was the place where the diaries should be preserved. In addition, there are three letters regarding Cooper's endorsement of the appointment of Charles Wesley to the Washington, D.C., School Board in 1936. Also, there is a program for a religious service held for Frelinghuysen University in 1934.

Anna Letitia Barbauld and William Allen poems, 1823 August 23-30 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Anna Letitia Barbauld was an English woman of letters who had great professional success at a time when women writers were still something of an anomaly. She is remembered for her poetry, children's literature, essays, criticism, and editorial works. She was rediscovered when feminist literary critics examined her place in British literary history. Barbauld was also an abolitionist, something she had in common with fellow educator and Stoke Newington resident William Allen. This item is a single small sheet of paper with an autograph manuscript poem by Barbauld on the front dated August 23, 1823, and another one on the back by William Allen dated August 30, 1823. Both poems were aimed at a juvenile audience. It is likely that their common interests and close proximity led them to develop a friendship. Although this was written towards the end of Barbauld's life, it is evidence that they still had at least an epistolary relationship in 1823.

Anna Lora Weiss Account Books, 1896-1910 0.2 Linear Feet 2 Items

Anna Lora Weiss, born circa 1858, lived in Boston's Dorchester section and owned several rental properties throughout the city. She was also a member of several voluntary and charitable associations, including the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the Commitee on Music for the School Committee of Boston. Her family, including her mother Mary Clapp Weiss, brothers Richard and Carl, and sister Mary, were of German descent. Collection contains two account books, dated 1896-1904 and 1905-1910 respectively, kept by Anna Lora Weiss of Boston, Mass. The account books meticulously document Weiss's income, including significant income she received from her rental properties and other investments, as well as her expenditures on travel, household goods, gifts, and charitable contributions. In addition, the account books indicate that Weiss loaned money at interest to her brother Carl for his often unsuccessful business endeavors. In addition to her finances, the account books also document Weiss's daily activities and social and political interests. Together, the account books reveal that Weiss was an active, independent, and astute businesswoman. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Anna Mitchell letter regarding the illness and death of her son, Preston, after 1920. 0.1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Anna Mitchell was a resident of Upland, California. Collection comprises a letter (14 pages) written by Anna Mitchell to Sarah, dated September 10, probably written later than 1920. Anna describes the illness and death of her six-year-old son, Preston, giving a day-by-day, sometimes an hour-by-hour, account of his symptoms, as well as treatments and diagnoses by a female doctor, Dr. Gregory. At first the diagnosis is rheumatism, then typhoid, then meningitis. Anna describes his "suffering so with the heat," with "pain down the right side in the region of the liver," "sunken cheeks," and crying with headache, fever, and vomiting. Paralysis comes later. Anna goes on to describe his death, the preparation of his body, the home viewing, and his cremation in Pasadena. She also describes her regrets and her grief; "... whose life was so much dearer to me than my own life, that since he is gone, nothing but darkness & sorrow is left us. Even for those that are left me--I cannot feel that I have courage or strength to make the effort to live."

Ann Baker papers, 1965-2014, bulk 1970s-1990s 84 Linear Feet (60 boxes, 2 oversize folders)

This collection documents the work of Ann Baker (1936-2016), an abortion rights and LGBTQ+ activist. A resident of New Jersey, she was active in state and federal politics, and was involved in many local and national organizations promoting access to abortion and equality for LGBTQ+ couples. The bulk of this material pertains to Baker's work collecting, documenting and disseminating information relating to the anti-abortion movement in the 1980s-1990s, in particular her work tracking Operation Rescue and other militant anti-abortion organizations. Baker's papers contain periodicals and other publications, correspondence, photographs, clippings and audiovisual materials, which document the anti-abortion movement and the pro-abortion movement's responses. Baker was in contact with organizers, clinics, abortion providers, as well as national anti-abortion and pro-abortion organizations. This collection includes graphic images of fetuses and babies. In some cases, the presence of such materials has been noted at the folder level; however, not every instance was identified.

The collection contains writings of Anne Firor Scott and materials relating to her academic work in Southern and women's history. There is also a file of correspondence written by Anna Lord Strauss (then president of the League of Women Voters) in 1949 and mailed to all members the league. Notes by Scott in this file explain her connection to Strauss, and the circumstances of the correspondence. Anne Noggle photographs of Soviet airwomen, 1990-1992 2.0 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

Anne Noggle (1922-2005), aviator, photographer, author, and educator, traveled to Moscow from 1990-1992 to conduct more than seventy interviews and to photograph former Soviet airwomen who served during World War II as pilots, gunners, bombardiers, navigators, and flight crews. The 36 black-and-white portraits in this collection show the women seated and standing, most in a studio setting; they are in civilian clothing and many are wearing their wartime medals and military insignia. The gelatin silver photographs were printed by Noggle and measure 20x24 (8), 16x20 (6), and 11x14 (22) inches. Almost all appear in her book A Dance with Death: Soviet Airwomen in World War II, published in 1994, also held by the library. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Annie Besant was a British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator, and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule. Collection comprises two autograph, signed letters written by Annie Besant. The first, written 1882 May 20, originally accompanied a copy of a petition, and asked the editor of the Evening News to publish the petition, since he published an attack upon "Dr. E. Aveling, the Misses Bradlaugh" and herself, "as teachers of the Science School of the Hall of Science." The second, written 1883 December 4 to an unidentified addressee, indicated "the place of the meeting is the Grosvenor Gallery."

Annie L. Hobbs Diaries, 1854-1869 0.2 Linear Feet 4 Items

Annie L. Hobbs of Laconia, N.H. was an instructor at the New Hampshire Conference Seminary and Female College (Methodist) in Tilton, N.H. and at the Troy Conference Academy in Poultney, Vt. during the 1850s and 1860s. Collection contains two manuscript pocket diaries, dated 1867 and 1869, and two pocket memoranda books, dated 1854-1855, 1859, and 1863-1865, kept by Annie L. Hobbs, an instructor at the New Hampshire Conference Seminary and Female College (Methodist) in Tilton, Belknap County, New Hampshire and at the Troy Conference Academy in Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont. In the diaries, Hobbs records her travels to and from her schools, evening readings, croquet games, naps, teas, Saturday excursions, her sewing work, occasional written work, receipt of letters and newspapers, Methodist festivals and Sabbath observances, and fluctuations in her health. Hobbs also regularly records her moods and her uncertainty about whether or not to go back for another term. Generally, the diaries document the life of a young female teacher living away from home, her daily routine, social contacts, and her intellectual pursuits. In the two memoranda books, Hobbs records student names and recitation periods, Lyceum lectures she attended, mathematical equations, and her expenses for 1863 to 1865.

The Annie Lois Newkirk Blakely Papers, 1870-1988, contain chiefly correspondence and diaries but also include legal papers, pictures, and clippings. The collection primarily documents the life of Blakely as a Clinton, S.C. housewife and mother, and of her children, Florence Ella Blakely and Ann Newkirk Blakely McLeod. Much of the Correspondence Series consists of personal letters by family members and friends written to Annie Lois Newkirk Blakely, her husband Ralph Royd Blakely, daughters Florence Ella Blakely (a Duke University librarian), and Ann Newkirk Blakely McLeod. A large portion of this series contain correspondence (1921-1978) between Annie and Ralph Blakely before they were married. Although the Diaries Series (1927-1978) contains primarily the journals of Annie Lois Newkirk Blakely, other family members Florence Ella Blakely and Inez Robertson Blakely, are also included. The Pictures Series contains family photographs of vacations, holidays, and weddings. The Legal Papers Series primarily contains banking and investment correspondence, as well as personal legal Items, such as Annie Blakely's discharge papers from the U.S. Army and Ralph Blakely's discharge papers from the U.S. Navy after World War I. The Miscellaneous Series includes War Ration Books from the 1940s and photocopied newspaper clippings that pertain to the Blakely and Newkirk families.

Anola Victoria (Peter) Mudie scrapbook, 1936-approximately 1960 1.0 Linear Feet

Anola Victoria "Peter" Mudie was a radio announcer and amateur photographer who hosted a long-running (1936-1961) radio show, Consumer News, on the KOIN station in Portland, Oregon, hosted by Fred Meyer grocery chain. Scrapbook consists primarily of black-and-white and color photographs, but also includes pamphlets, news clippings, cartoons and holiday/anniversary cards and announcements. Subjects depicted in the photographs include boxers, docks and ports (ships moored, cargo loading), grocery and retail operations and employees, labor union members primarily during the 1948 Longshoreman's strike, photographic processing operations, and warehouse workers. Anthony and Newlin family papers, 1861-1974 and undated 0.4 Linear Feet

Anthony family of Burlington (Guilford Co.), N.C. Collection primarily comprises 32 albumen photographs and one tintype (circa 1861-1954 and undated), most of which are accompanied by identifying information and feature formal portraits. Nineteen of the photographs represent Newlin or Anthony family members. Among the other thirteen, five are images of the Letterboat, Perry, and Holt families; four are unidentified images of World War I soldiers, possibly associates of Joseph Jonathan Newlin; and one is a print of evangelist "Cyclone Mac." The tintype is of an unidentified Confederate soldier, possibly James Rieh, whose letter of 12 May 1861 is in the collection. Other materials include John Anthony's bank account book (1906-1907); his personal account book (1892-1922), with entries for housekeeping and farm expenses and income; and a commonplace book for M. G. Newell (1938?). In addition, there are a few letters (1910-1958), clippings (1950-1974), and printed materials (1922-1961).

The Anthony Weir Papers span the years 1954 through 2006 and include advertising copy, brochures, clippings, memoranda, correspondence, photographs, and slides representing Weir's advertising career, especially his work for BBDO and Ogilvy & Mather (O&M). Video recording consists of a slide show of still images chiefly taken at annual meetings of the American Ophthalmological Society, most of which were and still are held at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia. Though the series begins with historical images, the first of which is a panoramic print of the 1919 conference attendees, most date from the 1950s through 1993, and are mostly in color. Subjects typically include scenes from the meetings, candid portraits of individuals attending the meeting and enjoying recreational activities, and the locations and grounds where the meetings were held. A credit line bears the name M. N. Luxenberg, Malcom (Mike) N. Luxenberg, ophthalmologist in Augusta, Georgia, Past President of AOS, and Professor and Chair for Ophthalmology for Augusta University. Appalachian Society of American Foresters records, 1921-1999 and undated 9 Linear Feet Approximately 5209 Items

Newsletters, executive meeting minutes, directories, correspondence, election information, meeting critiques, and other printed matter document the activities of the Appalachian Society of American Foresters between 1921-1994. Records found in the collection include position descriptions, committee charters, by-laws, and copies of the organization's journal, Trail Blazer. There is also a report on the recovery from Hurricane Hugo (1989).

Appleton Oaksmith papers, 1840-1949 10 Linear Feet

Appleton Oaksmith (1827 or 1828-1887) was a ship owner and captain, merchant, writer, and state representative for North Carolina. He was convicted in 1862 for allegedly outfitting ships to traffic in enslaved people but was later pardoned in 1872. Collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial documents, clippings, and bound volumes (mainly ledgers, logbooks, and scrapbooks) that document the personal life, interests, business ventures, naval voyages, and political and diplomatic career of Appleton Oaksmith. To a lesser extent the collection documents the lives and business of the Oaksmith and Mason families. The bulk of collection material dates from the mid- to late-1850s and the mid- to late-1870s. Notably absent from the collection is material related to Oaksmith's alleged trafficking in enslaved people and his indictment, conviction, and imprisonment for it.
