Collection contains primarily correspondence and printed materials. There are also three unidentified and undated black-and-white photographs, along with a few items representing the Livingston family, including a genealogy developed by Helen Thomas Blackwell. The correspondence contains mostly routine letters to Blackwell family members from other family members; including Alice Stone Blackwell, Anna M. Blackwell, Elizabeth Blackwell, Emma Blackwell, Helen Blackwell, Henry B. Blackwell, and Lucy Stone. There are also several postcards mailed to the Woman's Journal regarding subscriptions, address changes and other matters related to publication, or the editor's business acquaintances. There are several printed materials written by Blackwell authors, including "Philosophy of Re-Incarnation" by Anna Blackwell, and "Medicine & Morality," "Scientific Method in Biology," and “Erroneous Method in Medical Education" by Elizabeth Blackwell. However, the series primarily features printed items that were maintained in the Blackwell family library. Also contains a corrected typescript (1940s) of Ishbel Ross' Life of Elizabeth Blackwell along with notes from 1958 on the Elizabeth Blackwell award at Smith College.

William T. Blackwell founded the W. T. Blackwell and Co. Tobacco company in Durham, N.C. in 1870 with James R. Day, later adding Julian Shakespeare Carr. This collection includes materials from the Blackwell family, based in Durham, and their descendants, including the J. D. Pridgen and Chester B. Martin families. It includes early materials from Blackwell and Julian Carr's operations of the W.T. Blackwell and Co. Durham Tobacco company; documentation from the building of the W.T. Blackwell and Co. factory; materials from the Durham Tobacco trademark litigation cases of the 1870s; Blackwell family correspondence and financial papers, many documenting local Durham businesses; volumes and ledgers from the operation and closure of the Bank of Durham, operated by Blackwell between 1883 and 1888; photographs, correspondence, and scrapbooks from the Pridgen and Martin families documenting Durham churches, community events, personalities, and local news in the early 20th century; news clippings and family obituaries; and other assorted materials relating to Durham history.

Walter Blair (1900-1992) was a professor at the University of Chicago from 1929 to 1968 and a specialist in American folklore and humor. Collection contains early drafts, edited manuscripts, and proofs of Blair's publications, as well as bibliographic information and correspondence regarding publication of materials and other professional services. The bulk of the material is comprised of draft manuscripts of his work which he wrote with Hamlin Hill (Texas A&M), America's Humor from Poor Richard to Doonesbury (Oxford, 1978). There is also a smaller amount of other materials such as correspondence and reviews related to other publications, including Native American Humor: 1800-1900 (1937), Horse Sense in American Humor (1942), Tall Tale America: A Legendary History of Our Humorous Heroes (1944), Half-Horse Half-Alligator: The Growth of the Mike Fink Legend (1956), and Mark Twain and Huck Finn (1960). Forms part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for Literary Historiography.

Michael Francis Blake was one of Charleston, South Carolina's first African American studio photographers. Collection consists of 118 photographs, mostly studio portraits taken by Michael Francis Blake from about 1912 to 1934, with some outdoor settings. There is also a full set of copy prints. The great majority of the subjects appear to be African American; however, there are also individuals who are multi-racial, and possibly white and Asian. Formats comprise 91 photographic postcards and 28 black-and-white prints, many on card mounts but some in the form of more casual snapshots; there are also eight copy negatives. A few of the photographs may be taken by others. Thirty-six individuals in the photographs have been identified, including a portrait of the photographer. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Dr. Loy Connell Smith (1925-1968) and his wife, Eunice Andrews Smith (b. 1928), were Southern Baptist missionaries to Nigeria from 1959 through 1968. Collection includes family correspondence, photographs, hospital publications, and audiovisual material from the Smith family's time as missionaries in Nigeria. Contains information about the death of Dr. Loy Connell Smith in a car accident and the Smith family's subsequent return to the United States.

Most of the material relates to the leasing of property by Bland-Sutton, in particular correspondence with his solicitor, Edward John Quintas Maggs, regarding a case against Bland-Sutton, brought by a Mrs. Heath, regarding a sublet property. Other material relates to the alteration of his surname from Sutton to Bland-Sutton.

Advertising executive who worked for the Ogilvy & Mather agency in New York and London. Collection includes correspondence, financial and research reports, client and new business presentations, speeches, policy manuals, booklets and other printed materials, as well as videocassettes and print advertisements that document Blaney's work in client services, staff training and general management at Ogilvy & Mather. Companies represented include American Express, Chesebrough-Pond's, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Shell, SmithKline Beecham and Unilever. Acquired as part of the John W. E.F. (Everett) Bleiler was a novelist, editor, and scholar of science fiction and fantasy literature; he was the author of The Checklist of Fantastic Literature. This collection of original annotated typescripts from circa 1947-1949 relates to the compilation, editing and publication of the Checklist, and consists of the prefatory material, as well as substantial portions of the checklist as prepared for publication by Bleiler and Melvin Korshak, co-founder of Shasta Publishers and co-editor of the Checklist. Also includes a few related typescripts and the author-publisher contract from 1949.

Mathilde Blind was a writer and feminist active in late 19th century England. This letter was written by Blind thanking a correspondent for sending her a newspaper clipping containing a review of her work. She expresses gratitude for his thoughtfulness and for his "sympathetic spirit" towards her work.

Victor Bloede (1920-1999) was an advertising executive who served as President and Chief Executive Officer (1968-1974), and Chairman (1971-1983), of the Benton & Bowles agency. He retired in 1983. The Victor Bloede Papers span the years 1952-1983, with the bulk spanning 1962-1983, and consist primarily of speeches given during Bloede's tenure as President, then Chairman, of Benton & Bowles (B&B), as well as speeches delivered during 1973 when Bloede served as Chairman of the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA or 4-A's). Also included are a portion of the autobiography of Atherton Hobler, one of the co-founders of B&B, and correspondence relating to the anticommunist newsletter Counterattack. Topics included in the speeches include corporate finances and budget performance, television commericials, advertising effectiveness, management and business ethics. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Gertrude Duby Blom (1901-1993) was a Swiss-born photographer, journalist, anthropologist, and environmental activist. Collection comprises 71 black-and-white exhibit photographs featuring images taken by Gertrude Duby Blom between 1941 and 1979 in the highland jungles of Lacandón and other areas and towns in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The images document the cultural and ecological environments inhabited by indigenous Maya, predominantly the Lacandones; there are also images of Latino immigrants to the region, chiefly lumber industry workers and their families, and other townspeople in San Cristobal. Scenes from camps and towns portray mealtimes, hunting and gathering expeditions, agricultural customs, religious ceremonies, folk Catholicism and its rituals, classrooms, medical clinics, and street scenes. Later images attest to the destruction of native ecosystems and the rapidly changing culture of the indigenous peoples. The matted gelatin silver prints vary in size from 11x14 to 22x22 inches; there is also one 26x26 inch matted print. The accompanying exhibit and project records contain correspondence, notes, publicity, and other materials (1983-2004) documenting the collaboration between Alex Harris, documentary photographer from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Gertrude Blom, and individuals in Mexico and the U.S., which resulted in a major exhibit, "People of the forest: photographs of the Maya by Getrude Blom," launched in 1984, and the publication of "Gertrude Blom: bearing witness" (1984). Includes a 2015 audio interview conducted by Alex Harris with Blom's collaborator Barry Norris, who printed the photographs in this collection. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Hugo Leander Blomquist was professor and chair of the Botany Department at Duke University from 1921-1957. The collection includes correspondence between H.L. Blomquist and his wife Margaret during the 1920s and during H.L. Blomquist's service in the Army during World War I, class notes, North Carolina maps, as well as drawings and photographs of his book The Grasses of North Carolina. The collection ranges in date from 1912-2000.

Nancy Blood is a retired librarian (Durham County Library) and is also a feminist and LGBTQ rights activist. The collection consists of subject files of printed materials discussing women's health, employment, art, feminism, academics, motherhood, child care, birth control, and more, as well as several feminist publications and Blood's activism files. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Arthur Bloomfield (1914-1998) was a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, research, and professional and faculty activities. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

The Bloom Store daybooks and ledger consist of three financial volumes kept at the general store that Jewish merchant Max Bloom (1879-1951) operated from 1919 to 1924 in Whitakers, Edgecombe County and Nash County, North Carolina. Materials dating before 1919 may detail customer transactions that Bloom made through a different business venture or transactions that occurred at the store under prior ownership.

The undergraduate student group, Blue Devils United, advocates for the needs of members of the LGBTQ+ community and works to create social opportunities and a supportive environment for Duke's LGBTQ+ community. This collection contains exhibit panels, meeting minutes and agenda, photographs, and materials related to project and events planning and promotion. Contents of the collection span 2014 to 2017.

Joseph L. Blumenstein (1914-1982) was a Jewish United States Army officer and merchant born in Berlin, Germany. The materials in this collection document Joseph L. Blumenstein's emigration from Germany in 1937, his efforts to rescue his parents from Czechoslovakia during the Holocaust, his service in the United States Army during World War II, and postwar family life in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

June Blum is a feminist artist and curator, and was at the forefront of the women's art movement in New York City in the 1960s-1970s. Accession (2009-0174) (150 items; 0.6 lin. ft.; dated 1960s-2005) includes biographies and articles about Blum, programs and announcements from gallery shows she curated or participated in, and some photocopied newspaper articles about her role in the women's art movement. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Reginald Horace Blyth popularized Japanese poetic forms such as haiku and senryū within English-speaking audiences by publishing widely read English translations. Notably, Blyth helped draft the Ningen Sengen declaration, which stated that Emperor Hirohito was a human being and not divine. Blyth also served throughout the post-WWII era as a tutor to Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko. In addition, Blyth was an associate of Zen teacher D.T. Suzuki and other Buddhist practitioners and authors who, along with him, introduced Zen to Western audiences. The Reginald Horace Blyth papers include manuscript drafts, notes, and notebooks for published and unpublished works. Many of the files relate to his books on Japanese poetry, humor, and Zen, as well as to his works about British and American Literature. Other files relate to unpublished works and to research interests about animism, culture and mysticism, the British poet John Clare, language, love, and satanism. The bulk of the Printed Materials series includes an incomplete selection of Blyth's published books as well as newsletters and commentary from the Diamond Sangha in Honolulu.

Methodist educators and family members from Kentucky and Alabama. The Boatman Family Papers span the years 1901-1981; the majority of the papers were generated by the Rev. Dr. Conway and Mrs. Caroline Boatman, Methodist educators from Kentucky. The collection is arranged in series by family member and institution, the most substantial series being the Conway and Caroline Boatman Series; the John Paul Boatman Series; and the Union College Series. Other smaller groups pertain to other family members. Family correspondence makes up the majority of the collection, but there are also scrapbooks; educational records (primarily financial); many photographs of Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky; and clippings and other printed items. Topics covered by the correspondence in the Conway and Caroline's papers cover their courtship (1909-1919); the Methodist Episcopal mission in Jubbulpore, India (1919-1923); and India Methodist Theological College (1923-1925). There are also many references to the three institutions where Dr. Boatman served as President - Iowa National Bible Training School (1928-1931), Snead College in Boaz, Ala., and College of Barbourville, Ky. (1939-1959). Fund-raising, especially during the Depression, is a commonly recurring theme. Other letters from sons of the Boatmans refer to their college years from the 1930s-1940s. Institutions referred to here include Drew University, University of Kentucky in Lexington, and Southwestern College in Kansas. Eula Brasher's correspondence documents the traditional customs and folkways of Northern Alabama's Southern uplands.

Agnes Cohen Bogart (1917-2013) was a labor activist, editor and public relations specialist based in New York. Collection includes articles, clippings, correspondence, memos, newsletters, and other printed material that document Bogart's career as a journal editor and public relations executive as well as her personal relationship with sociologist and spouse Leo Bogart. Institutions represented include American Management Association; Equitable Life; Industrial Relations Counselors; Labor's Non-Partisan League; National Foremen's Institute; Organization Resources Counselors; and the Textile Workers Union of America. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Leo Bogart was an applied sociologist and mass media expert who was Vice President and General Manager of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau (NAB) from 1960-1989. In his career with the NAB, Bogart pioneered new methodologies in newspaper marketing research and led two major projects during the mid 1970s-1989 to bolster the ailing newspaper industry, the Newspaper Readership Project and the Future of Advertising Project. He was also a prolific author and public speaker, and published 195 articles and 14 books, and delivered over 150 speeches from 1943-2005. The Leo Bogart Papers span the years 1912-2010 and document Bogart's professional work with the Newspaper Advertising Bureau; as a mass media expert; and as an author and public speaker. The collection includes correspondence, clippings, articles, speeches, books, journals, chapters, drafts, proposals, notes, reports, scrapbooks, resumes, interviews, schedules, programs, pamphlets, administrative records, research materials, publications, promotional materials, ephemera, yearbooks, student papers, military records, photographs, negatives, and slides. Materials represent Bogart's professional work as Vice President and General Manager of the Newspaper Advertising Bureau, as well as his early employment with Standard Oil (New Jersey), McCann-Erickson, and Revlon, Inc.; as a prolific author and public speaker; as a Senior Fellow with the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University; and as a mass media consultant with the Innovation International Media Consulting Group. The bulk of files relate to research on U.S. markets, although some files do cover international research projects. Topics include newspaper marketing research; newspaper readership; newspaper advertising; television and society; critiques of mass media; social science research methodology; and international newspapers in emerging markets. The collection also documents Bogart's early experiences as a student and as a soldier in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, which formed the basis for several of his writing projects.

W. Bryan Bolich (1896-1977) served as a Professor of Law at Duke University from 1927 to 1966. Papers contain family memorabilia, general correspondence, photographs, an oral history, diaries, course notes, writings, drafts of statutes revisions, and clippings. Major subjects include family work at Southern Railway in Forsyth County, N.C., Duke Law School curriculum development and reorganization, Law Day, the Rhodes Scholarship, Trinity College Class of 1917 alumni activities, Law School Alumni Association, North Carolina House of Representatives, and property and alien rights laws authored with the North Carolina General Statute Commission.

Edward P. Bond was a committeeman for the New England branch of the American Freedman's Union Commission, in Boston, Mass. Collection comprises a letter (undated) written by Edward P. Bond to Mr. Snow, regarding he and his wife's unsuccessful application for teaching positions. Bond wrote his letter on a letter he forwarded from J. Parkman regarding the matter.

Allan H. Bone (1917-1992) spent nearly forty years in the Duke University Department of Music. He served as professor of music, chair of the department, and conductor of the Duke Symphony Orchestra. The Allan H. Bone Papers include material related to conducting, music subjects, courses, research, and the administration and history of the Duke University Department of Music. It also includes concert programs from Duke University performances, personal correspondence, and daily planners. English.

Collection consists of two large cloth-bound photograph albums dating from circa 1881, housing 56 large albumen photographs taken by noted 19th century French photographer Félix Bonfils, who owned the Bonfils studio, and his Syrian assistant Georges Saboungi. The images were sold as souvenirs, and portray cities and towns, landscapes, ruins, monuments, tombs, and other religious and historic sites of Palestine, in areas now occupied by Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. Locations named in the captions include Beirut, Bethlehem, Cana, Damascus, Galilee, the Holy Sepulchre shrine, Jaffa, Jerusalem, the Mosque of Omar at the Dome of Rock, the Mount of Olives, Mount Tabor, Nazareth, Samaria, the Tomb of David, the Wailing Wall, the interior of the house of the English Consul in Damascus, a "crusader's tower" in the village of Ramleh, and various other sites.

Collection comprises a photograph album maintained by an unidentified wealthy, possibly British, family; handwritten captions appear in several different hands. The 159 photographs either document family travel as souvenirs, or document both their travel and photograph collecting, because many of the photographs are albumen prints by famous late-19th-century photographers, including Bonfils, Zangaki, Samuel Bourne, Francis Frith, and others not identified except by the presence of their negative numbers and captions on the photograph. From these photographers there are images of Israel; Syria; Palestine; Jerusalem; Athens, Greece; and Agra, India, along with photographs of statues and other artifacts recovered in archaeological digs. Other photographs in the album were probably taken by family members, first in Venice, then in various places, including Scotland, England, and Jamaica. Among these photographs are albumen and cyanotype prints. Photographs in the album date between 1850 and 1897, and range in size from 1.5 x 2-inches to 8.5 x 11.5 inches.

Rosa Bonheur was a nineteenth century French painter and sculptor. The collection consists of examples of Bonheur's correspondence, including one letter referencing her painting and her partner, Nathalie. Acquired as part of the Lisa Unger Baskin Collection in the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection contains personal and business correspondence, and accounts and genealogical records of the Bonsack and Plaine families, connected by marriage. Included are letters from family members in schools in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York. Included also are letters concerning woolen factories in Good Intent, Va., 1862, and at Bonsack, Va., during the 1880s. There are also references to David H. Plaine's work as a churchman, teacher, and politician in and around Roanoke, Va.; accounts of Jacob Bonsack, a merchant in Good Intent, Va., and accounts of Harry E. Plaine, a hardware dealer in Broken Bow, Neb., during the 1880s. About fifty letters, 1786-1851, are written in German to the two John Bonsacks, father (1760-1795) and son (1781-1859).

Maud Ballington Booth was the founder, with her husband, of the Volunteers of America in 1896 and its auxiliary, the Volunteer Prison League. Collection comprises two letters and small handbill.

Personal and professional papers. Some subjects include: Calis (computer aided language instruction); Calico presentations and manuals; NSA contracts and proposals; German Department administrative materials; Duke Language Tool kit.

German writer and intellect who escaped a Nazi concentration camp and immigrated to New York in 1937. Collection consists of correspondence between Borchardt and several friends, including several news clippings and photographs. Subjects discussed include the emergence of Nazi Germany under Hitler and the origins and consequences of World War II. The remainder of the collection consists of literary manuscripts, drafts, and notes from Borchardt's writings, as well as some correspondence and newspaper clippings. Many of the materials are not in order and are in poor condition. Writings are in German and English.

English physician and chemist. Letters from Bostock to Marcet, two letters from Marcet to Bostock, and a typed transcription of a few paragraphs from letters from 1816. The letters touch upon matters personal (e.g. Bostock's move from Liverpool to London) and professional. Includes references to many contemporary European physicians and scientists. Documents the typical research and administrative opportunities available to a British medical practitioner of the early nineteenth century. Forms part of the Trent Manuscripts and was acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Collection includes correspondence, corporate reports, clippings, speeches and videocassettes. African-American graphic artist, professor and advertising executive based primarily in California; principal in the firm Archie Boston Graphic Design. Collection includes print materials, posters, sketches, greeting cards, correspondence, as well as audiovisual materials in multiple formats (DVDs, tape reels, and film reels) that document Boston's career in advertising and graphic design as well as his academic life at California State University-Long Beach. Companies represented include California Plum, Raisin and Apple Advisory Boards, FMC, Motorola, Pentel, Raytheon and Yamaha. Acquired as part of the John W. Correspondence of Alexander's father, Dr. Henry Boteler, for 1776-1837; and family letters of Alexander with information on his career at Princeton College and his courtship of his future wife, Helen Macomb Stockton. Political correspondence, relating to the election of 1860, the Constitutional Union party, and Alexander's travels around the country in 1882-1884 while a member of the U.S. tariff commission. Volumes include Boteler's diary for 1845, regarding his plantation; various scrapbooks and some genealogical materials on the Pendleton, Digges, and Pope families.
