The Jody Jones Hunter Collection of Works by William Styron includes first editions, limited editions, translations, and other editions, many of them autographed or inscribed, of the works of William Styron, along with published articles, correspondence, manuscripts, and related materials. The correspondence is chiefly letters written by Styron to Stuart Wright, the owner of Palaemon Press in Winston-Salem, N.C. and publisher of several limited editions of Styron's work. Also included with the collection is a carbon typescript of Confessions of Nat Turner, with holograph notes, and the original typescript of Styron's recipe for southern fried chicken from The Artist's and Writer's Cookbook (1961).

Joe Castro papers, 1957-2009 and undated 3.6 Linear Feet 7.5 Gigabytes (333 digital files)

Collection comprises materials primarily related to Doris Duke and Joe Castro and to Castro's work with his jazz trio, dated 1957-2009 and undated. Includes approximately 200 2-3/4 x 2-3/4 color transparencies, 35 mm color slides, negatives, and various prints. Subjects of the images vary, but include approximately 50 casual images of Doris Duke in various locations, along with many casual and a few formal photographs of Castro, as well as some with various jazz artists. There is also a group of scores for jazz arrangements, some original, others marked by various composers, as well as a few pieces of printed sheet music. Manuscript material is limited to a few letters and cards that speak to the relationship between Castro and Duke, and to the formation of Clover Records. There is a compact disc of music by Loretta and Joe Castro, and other electronic files of images have been transferred to the server.

Joe H. Hernandez scrapbook, 1943-1965 and undated 1 Linear Feet (1 item)

Joe H. Hernandez was born in 1924 and worked at the San Antonio General Depot between 1951-1954. Collection comprises a commercially produced scrapbook (12 x 14.5 inches) containing 50 black-and-white and 102 color photographs, ranging in size from 3.5 x 5 inches to 8 x 10 inches. Hernandez and several of his friends were female impersonators, so the majority of the photographs are of men in various states of drag. Others show Hernandez surrounded by his friends and family or in affectionate embraces with gay male friends. Also present are ticket stubs, matchbook covers, night club flyers, programs, postcards, and clippings, mostly having to do with performance venues and gay clubs in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Antonio, and Kansas City, as well as with famous performers. They also document Hernandez's interest in Broadway shows, jazz, and actors and actresses. Laid-in are several U.S. Army personnel documents from Hernandez's work at the San Antonio General Depot 1951-1954; in addition, there are two photographs of Hernandez in uniform. Also laid-in are several other photographs, clippings, and programs. Photograph album has been disbound for conservation purposes.

Joel Raphaelson was an advertising executive with Ogilvy & Mather in New York and Chicago. The Joel Raphaelson papers include correspondence, speeches and presentations, writing drafts and other printed materials as well as audiovisual materials in multiple formats (videocassettes, optical disks, audio reels). Topics include agency and account management, management philosophy and strategic direction, and theories of writing for business and advertising copy. A significant portion of the collection is devoted to correspondence with David Ogilvy, Ogilvy's memos and other writings. Acquired as part of the John W. Joe Sitter is a collector and friend of Gaylord Schanilec. Gaylord Schanilec is a notable American wood engraver, printer, designer and illustrator. He is the proprietor of the press Midnight Paper Sales, located in Stockholm, Wisconsin. Sitter's collection includes original wood engravings, publications, clippings, printer's waste, correspondence, and other materials documenting the artwork and career of Gaylord Schanilec.

Johann Christian Ehrmann papers, 1792-1805 8 items

Papers are in German and in French. Michel-Augustin Thouret acknowledges receipt of a box of medical instruments. Other material relates to Ehrmann in his capacity as military physician. An autograph certificate, signed by Ehrmann, protests the treatment of the French dead, citing his own futile efforts to obtain a death certificate for a French grenadier. This document was promptly returned, accompanied by a note from his supervisor informing him that it could not be submitted to the minister in its present form.

John Armstrong Chaloner was a celebrity and writer known for coining the catchphrase “Who’s looney now?” in the aftermath of psychiatric experiments and own legal troubles regarding his sanity. Great-grandson of John Jacob Astor; from Cobham (Albemarle County), Virginia. Collection includes business and personal correspondence, legal papers, writings and drafts by Chaloner, printed materials primarily composed of newspaper clippings, and some personal financial documents and photographs. The letters, almost half of the collection, are concerned with Chaloner’s attempts to have himself declared sane after a four-year involuntary internment in Bloomingdale Asylum at White Plains, New York.

Merchant and British Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Business and personal correspondence of the Backhouse family, principally of John Backhouse. Material for the 18th and early 19th centuries reflects the family's mercantile operations, including efforts to collect pre-Revolutionary debts in America. Other papers relate to Backhouse's career as Commissioner and Receiver General of the Excise Office and Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, his service as private secretary to George Canning, his service with the diplomatic corps, his art collection, and his mercantile associates in Amsterdam and Hamburg. Other subjects include the Board of Control under Canning, and the British consulates at Canton and Amoy. Family correspondence contains numerous references to the Foreign Office and to relations with Circassia, France, Greece, Russia, Turkey, and the United States. Letters and diaries of Backhouse's son, George, and his wife include references to the slave trade and describe their life in Havana while he was commissary judge there. There are also thirteen Cabinet circulars (1835-1837) from the British Foreign Office and marked for return to either Backhouse or Strangways. These abstracts of intelligence were based on confidential reports received from the British ambassadors in Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, Madrid, Constantinople, and Petersburg, and relate chiefly to French, Russian, and Spanish politics.

John Benjamin Harris is Professor Emeritus of Management and Marketing at Virginia State University. He pioneered governmental and commercial awareness of African American advertising markets and, in the 1970s, became the Director of the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise and Special Assistant to the Governor for Minority Enterprise. The John Benjamin Harris Papers span the years 1955-1991 and include scholarly articles, corporate reports and proposals, product labels, 16mm film reels, and audio tapes. Materials represent Harris' academic and professional work at New York University and Virginia State University as well as his work for the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise. Topics touched on in the collection include minority business enterprises; minority markets and minorities (especially African Americans) as consumers; and African American mass media. In addition, the collection reflects Harris' work for the advertising industry with employers including Cunningham & Walsh, Inc., the Leo Burnett Company, Inc., and the Ted Bates Company. Brands represented include Alka-Seltzer (Miles Laboratories), Campbell Soup, Coca-Cola, Cleveland Electric, Eastman Kodak, Pillsbury, and Schlitz.

The bulk of the material is for 1840-1900 and pertains to the life of a planter during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Correspondence concerns life in the Confederate services, wartime depredations in South Carolina, the Confederate migration to Mexico and life and politics in that country after 1865, and life and economic conditions in the South during Reconstruction.

John B. McFerrin was a professor of finance at the University of Florida, as well as a past president of the Southern Economic Association. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, writing his dissertation on Caldwell and Company. McFerrin's book, Caldwell and Company: A Southern Financial Empire, was first published in 1939 and updated in 1969. Includes documents (the majority dating from the 1920s-1930s) gathered by McFerrin during the research and writing of his book Caldwell and Company: A Southern Financial Empire, and two copies of the book.

John Bonsack papers, 1786-1929, bulk bulk 2 Linear Feet (4 Boxes, 2,034 items.)

Collection contains personal and business correspondence, and accounts and genealogical records of the Bonsack and Plaine families, connected by marriage. Included are letters from family members in schools in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York. Included also are letters concerning woolen factories in Good Intent, Va., 1862, and at Bonsack, Va., during the 1880s. There are also references to David H. Plaine's work as a churchman, teacher, and politician in and around Roanoke, Va.; accounts of Jacob Bonsack, a merchant in Good Intent, Va., and accounts of Harry E. Plaine, a hardware dealer in Broken Bow, Neb., during the 1880s. About fifty letters, 1786-1851, are written in German to the two John Bonsacks, father (1760-1795) and son (1781-1859).

John Buck Diary, 1887 August 10-September 25 0.5 Linear Feet 4 Items

John Buck was an American, most likely a resident of the New York metropolitan area. The collection consists of a diary in four volumes that chronicles the vacation in Great Britain of a young American named John Buck from August 10 to September 25, 1887. The volumes comprise 249 handwritten pages in total, with commercial prints, menus, receipts, and theater playbills attached to the back of selected pages. The script is elaborate, but legible, and the narrative is remarkably descriptive. Humorous sketches illustrate the first volume in particular and the third volume includes three photographs of the author. The diary provides a detailed account of Buck's voyage on the R.M.S. Britannic and his time in London, where he spent the majority of his vacation socializing and attending the theater. Buck also stayed in Edinburgh, Scotland, with Henry Irving, the famous actor and manager of the Lyceum Theatre, and with the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort at Badminton House.

The Dimitry, Hardeman, Stuart, and Mayes families were white Southerners involved in education, government, business, and the military during the time just before and after the Civil War. The collection includes correspondence that documents the lives of family members in the South from the 1850s to the 1890s. In addition to local family matters, there are accounts of Confederate army service and views on politics and government. Extensive writings on religious and mathematical topics as well as poetry are also to be found. Family members who are featured in the collection include Colonel Oscar J. E. A transcription, in an anonymous hand, of abolitionist verse by Lettsom is followed by a description of the setting of the gathering at which the verses were presented. On the verso of this is an autograph note, signed by Benjamin Wilson, 1801.

John Dallas Langston papers, 1842-1969, bulk 1941-1946 13.2 Linear Feet 9,900 Items

U.S. Army colonel from North Carolina. Bound volumes, correspondence, scrapbooks, and clippings detailing Langston's activities as a Trinity College (later became Duke University) student, then later as a U.S. Army colonel in World War II, and assistant to General Lewis B. Hershey on the Selective Service Board. Langston also served on General E. H. Crowder's draft board in Washington, D.C. during World War I: Crowder was chiefly responsible for drafting of the Selective Service Act which was passed in May 1917, and as Provost Marshal General had responsibility for administering the program during the war. The bulk of the material covers the period 1941-1946. Other items provide evidence for Langston's support of Prohibition, and his role as opponent of Al Smith in the N.C. Democratic primary in 1928. Later additions to the collection document earlier Langston family history. They also contain Langston's poems, and correspondence with Professor Edwin Mims about them, a scrapbook of the Simmons-Bailey campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1930, and his correspondence with New York attorney Roscoe S. Conkling concerning Langston's opposition to compulsory military service during peacetime.
