There are also letters to Megroz from publishers and from the British Broadcasting Company regarding articles and programs on Ross and his work on malaria. Papers include reprints, photos, a copy of Ordinance no. 22 of 1910 and an obituary of Ross from the British Medical Journal.

In response to Robin Morgan's book, Sisterhood is Global, the Sisterhood is Global Institute was founded in 1984 with Karen Berry as its first director. Its purpose was to mobilize international support on women's rights issues and educate various communities around the world on women's rights and human rights issues. The records of the Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI) span the years from 1965 to 2005, with the bulk of the material ranging from 1980 to 2002. Materials such as correspondence, administrative files, publications drafts, manuals, newsletters, flyers, photographs, videos, and sound recordings provide a record of the work and the organizational structure of SIGI from its inception to its present activities at the beginning of the 21st century. The documents in the collection illustrate SIGI's efforts to discuss, debate, and act on a variety of women's issues around the world, including voting rights and political representation; reproductive rights; violence against women; education for women; and the socio-economic status of women.

Slade family papers, 1751-1929 and undated 4.5 Linear Feet

The Slade family were white plantation owners and businessmen in Martin County, North Carolina. This collection (2781 items; dated 1751-1929) comprises family and business correspondence, account books, memoranda books, daybooks, time books, court records, and other papers of Jeremiah Slade, William Slade, and of several generations of the Slade family. The papers reflect the financial and family affairs of a plantation owning family in the antebellum South, and include student letters from the University of North Carolina, Trinity College, and the North Carolina State and Normal College (Greensboro); Mexican War and Civil War letters; legal papers and land deeds; plantation records, including lists of enslaved persons; and materials related to slavery and post-Civil War agricultural advances. Also contains materials relating to the forced removal of the Tuscarora Nation in the early 1800s and the leasing of their land through Jeremiah Slade.

Society of the 9019 records, 1892-1943 5.5 Linear Feet 2500 Items

The Society of 9019, organized in February 1890 under the leadership of John Spencer Bassett, was an honorary scholarship fraternity. The society began at Trinity College and continued on at Duke University. Acceptance into the 9019 was based, in part, on an academic average of 90 or above. It was also conditioned upon a scholastic average of 2.25 quality points, making it similar to the male only Phi Beta Kappa society. The 9019 is credited with establishing the South Atlantic Quarterly, supporting scholarly activities among North Carolina high schools, and establishing student-faculty forums on a variety of timely subjects. The group disbanded in the early 1940s. The 9019 records contain ritual and member lists, program and contest advertisements, ceremonial robes, founding documents, letters, photographs, memorabilia and other papers related to this honor society. The dates of the materials range from 1892-1944.

Sonny Burke papers, circa 1949-1951 and undated 4 Linear Feet (5 flat boxes; 76 complete big band charts) 5 flat boxes 76 complete big band charts

The Sonny Burke Collection (chiefly undated, but some dated between Nov., 1949 and June, 1951) has as its focal point 76 arrangements of popular music for "Big Band." These charts were used by Burke's band during the 1940's-1950's for performances in the United States and Mexico. Most of the arrangements appear to be by Sonny Burke, but other composers/arrangers include: Frank Erickson, Hal Schaefer, Stan Kenton, John Valentine Eppel, Laurindo Almeida, and Ray Conniff. Some of the arrangements were made for recordings on the Decca Records label. The most common instrumentation is for two alto saxophones/clarinets, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, four trumpets and four trombones, although other combinations exist. The instrumentation is noted for each title in the Container List.

South Africa documentary photographs collection, 1940s-approximately 2013, bulk 1960-2013 45.0 Linear Feet (49 boxes; approximately 1133 items) 278.1 Gigabytes

Collection consists of over 1100 black-and-white and color exhibit prints representing the work of over 50 South African photographers who documented conditions during and after apartheid, from about the 1940s to 2013, with most dating after 1960. Arranged in five series representing projects curated by documentary photographers Alex Harris, Paul Weinberg, and others: Beyond the Barricades, The Cordoned Heart, Then and Now, Underexposed, and The Other Camera. There is also a series of work by Jeeva Rajgopaul, and a series of Staffrider digital materials. Set in rural and urban South Africa, the images portray political rallies; protests; forced removals; funerals; social gatherings such as dances and concerts; work and domestic life; the life of the elderly, the migrants, and the impoverished; and labor organizing and strikes. There are many portraits of individuals of all races and classes, well-known activists and politicians, as well as countless ordinary South African citizens. Many of the photographers were members of Afrapix, a collective photography agency engaged in documenting the anti-apartheid struggle. There is a small amount of printed material, as well as a selection of digital image files and a digital audio file of an exhibit talk. South African provincial election ballots, 1994 0.1 Linear Feet

Collection comprises three provincial ballots (8.5"x17"), from the South African provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, and the Western Cape. Instructions on how to fill out the form are provided in 11 languages, including English, Zulu, Afrikaans, Northern Sotho, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, Tsonga, Swazi, Ndebele, and Venda. Ballots are printed in full color, with each of the 19 parties represented by a symbol, code, and party leader photograph. The Inkatha Freedom Party was a late entrant into the race, and its information was affixed via a sticker. During the election, each voter cast two votes via two separate ballots, one each for the national versus provincial elections. Voter's selected a party, not an individual candidate, to represent them in the National Assembly and the provincial legislatures.

The South Asian Pamphlets Collection spans the years 1920-2005, with the bulk of the material dating from the 1950s to the 1990s, and with only a few items from the 1910s-1940s. It is arranged by country. Topics commonly covered in each country series include but are not limited to agriculture, arts, defense, economic development, education, ethnic or cultural conflict, industry and commerce, international relations, politics and government, population issues, religion and philosophy, rural development, tourism, and the status of women. While the majority of the pamphlets were published by organizations and agencies and do not list individual authors' names, there are also pamphlets with individual authors listed.

The Southeast Women's Employment Coalition Records (SWEC) span the period 1868 to 1991 with the bulk dating from 1981 to 1990. The multiracial, regional organization was founded chiefly to expand employment opportunities for women in the rural South. Correspondence, financial records, reports, printed material, personnel files, photographs, audiovisual material, writings, meeting minutes, and conference papers comprise the majority of the collection. Well documented are the Southeast Women's Employment Coalition's efforts: to provide leadership training for women; to encourage women to apply for nontraditional jobs, for example through its Women's Opportunity in Road Construction (WORC) Project; to promote women's employment in the tourism industry; to evaluate economic, social and political trends affecting women in the South such as child care, comparable worth, and nontraditional jobs for women; and to establish ties with other organizations seeking to improve women's economic status. Administrative concerns relating to the Southeast Women's Employment Coalition, including personnel, financial, and organizational issues are also well described. Represented extensively are their efforts to raise money from private foundations and businesses. Organizations highlighted in the collection include Public Affairs Research and Communications, Inc. and the Women's Technical Assistance Project. In general, information concerning these topics and organizations is scattered throughout the collection.

Collection of 137 embossed advertising stickers from an unknown producer. Stickers depict a wide range of businesses and products primarily in the Southern California region, from Los Angeles to San Diego. Products represented include alcoholic beverages, automotive parts and supplies, clothing, cosmetics, food products, gasoline and motor oil, hair care preparations, musical instruments, patent medicines, plastic surgery, shaving products, sporting goods, tooth powder and other dentifrices. Companies and events represented include the California Pacific International Exposition, Carnation and Max Factor. Some stickers are affixed to envelopes; others are affixed to jobber cards giving production dates and design details. Acquired as part of the John W. Southerners on New Ground records, 1993-2015 17.3 Linear Feet

According to the organization's website, Southerners on New Ground (SONG) is an intersectional activist organization that works to build, connect, and sustain those in the South who believe in liberation across all lines of race, class, culture, gender and sexuality. It was established in 1994 following a National Lesbian and Gay Task Force meeting. SONG is currently headquartered in Atlanta with regional offices across the South. The accession (2009-0098) (9.6 lin. ft.; dated 1993-2004) includes administrative and financial records, programming materials, and organizational files, all stemming from retreats, training, workshops, and community events sponsored or promoted by SONG. The accession also includes SONG materials from the Bayard Rustin project, People of Color activities, Pride at Work, and the Highlander Economy Educational Institute, among others. The accession (2015-0113) (2.9 lin. ft.; dated 2006-2015) was donated by Caitlin Breedlove, Co-Director of SONG from 2006-2015. It includes administrative and financial records, programming information, flyers and promotional materials and research related to campaign initiatives from her time in the SONG leadership.

Southern Poverty Law Center Intelligence Project collection, 1940s-2020; 1940s-ongoing 115 Linear Feet (85,500 items)

The SPLC Intelligence Project Collection includes printed materials, serials, organizational literature, pamphlets, clippings, catalogs, fliers, and correspondence from a variety of groups monitored by the SPLC and its contacts between the 1980s and 2010. Included within the collection are many groups falling within the SPLC Klanwatch and Militia Watch projects. Organizations represented in this collection typically promoted anti-semitic, white supremacist, racist, separatist, or anti-Communist views and policies. Other organizations promoted Second Amendment rights, right-wing Christian and American nationalism, Y2K and survivalist preparations, and the rise of the Confederacy. SPLC's interests expanded across the political spectrum to include both right-wing and left-wing extremist literature.

Southern Sweet Gum Company advertising trading cards for Kestler's Sweet Gum and Pepsin, circa 1898-1903 0.1 Linear Feet

The Southern Sweet Gum Company was a chewing gum manufacturer in Greensboro (Guilford Co.), N.C. Collection comprises 8 full-color advertising trade cards (approx. 4x6 in.), featuring authors and composers, produced as a purchasing incentive for the chewing gum. Included are cards for Burns, Byron, Dickens, Goethe, Longfellow, Mozart, Schiller, and Tennyson. Missing from the collection are Wagner, Beethoven, and Liszt. The cards are undated, but there is documentation for the company's location in Greensboro between 1898 and 1903.

This collection contains 33 sketch maps of locations in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. It includes a number of B. P. Baker Co. plats for a tract of land in Gates County, N.C.; plans of subdivisions and improvements in Savannah by Percy Sugden; a map of Durham, N.C., in 1867 by Lewis Blount; a map of Mississippi representing Choctaw and Chickasaw territories and missionary stations by Sarah Coffin; and a detailed plat of the Bennett & Wallace Lands in West Virginia. Maps signed by Robert Jayne, W. F. Brown, John Tebeau, and Ravenel Gignilliet are present.

Southgate-Jones Family papers, 1760-2008 22.4 Linear Feet circa 13,456

The Southgate-Jones family papers, 1794-1990s (bulk 1912-1933), are largely comprised of both business and personal correspondence, but also include printed material; photographs; genealogical information; business records in the form of volumes, reports, and minutes of meetings; clippings; and legal and financial papers. Several generations of Southgate and Jones family members are represented, including James Southgate, James H. Southgate, Mattie Logan Southgate Jones and James Southgate ("South") Jones. These individuals were involved in business, educational, political, civic, social and cultural activities in Durham and North Carolina during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Areas include insurance, real estate and tobacco businesses, banking, the administration of Trinity College, the women's suffrage movement, the Durham Civic Association, and Durham Masonic Lodge No. 352. The collection is useful for studying the history of Durham and North Carolina, the regional application of national policy toward farmers during the 1920s and 1930s, and the family history of prominent citizens.

Spanish Advertising broadsides (Auca and Alelujas), 1938-1985 and undated 3 Linear Feet

An auca is a graphic format popular in Spain and especially in the region of Catalonia around Barcelona. The genre dates at least to the 17th century but was banned during the 18th century before experiencing a renewal during the 19th and later the 20th centuries as a uniquely Catalonian form of expression. It takes the form of a cartoon or a comic strip, typically with 48 blocks of image and text, although some may have less. An auca is generally produced as a single sheet, but occasionally a booklet form is used. The captions tend to have some sort of consistent rhyme to assist with the flow and storytelling. Many times the term “auca” appears in the title, but another term, “aleluya,” is used, apparently interchangeably. Some sources indicate that the aleluya originated in Castile and originally included religious elements that were shed over time. The aucas found in this collection are focused primarily on advertising a range of products, businesses, services or entertainments such as films, but also present are public service announcements for topics such as safety, health or the National Lottery. A common format is to relate some sort of tangential or episodic story and end by directly promoting the product or company of choice. Narratives tend to focus on everyday events that most families would be able to at least partially relate to. Many involve nuclear families and the day-to-day trials that they may go through. Common themes involve food, gender roles, entertainment, education, family, race and hygiene. Companies represented in the materials include GAMA, Philips, Procter & Gamble, Puig, and Unilever. Items in this collection appear in both Spanish and Catalan. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection contains correspondence, logbooks, shipping and passport registers, crew lists, and an inventory of consular property. Communications in the collection are chiefly directed to the Spanish Consulate in Charleston, S.C., by the Madrid government, by Spanish diplomats and consular representatives in the U.S., and by governing officials in Florida, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The papers of the 1790s and early 1800s are largely concerned with Spanish interests in Florida. The papers of the 1830s, except those dealing with routine commercial matters, are largely concerned with political affairs in Spain. Later papers relate to Spain's concern that the U.S. will aid Cuban insurgents; reports of American filibustering for Spanish possessions before and after the Civil War; revolutionary movements in Cuba; Spain's diplomatic approach to the U.S. during the Civil War; Spain's naval war with Chile and Peru (1865-1866); Charleston's trade with Spanish West Indian possessions during most of the 19th century; and occasionally to Spanish diplomatic relations with nations other than the U.S. Bound volumes in the collection include letter books, shipping and passport registers, logbooks, crew lists, and an inventory of consular property.

Vice-Consulate of Spain based in Savannah, Ga. Largely communications directed to the Spanish Vice-Consulate in Savannah, Ga., by the Madrid government, by Spanish ministers, consuls, and vice-consuls in the U.S., and by governing officials in Puerto Rico and Cuba. The central theme is Spain's constant preoccupation that American or Cuban expeditions, operating from the U.S., would wrest the island from the Spanish crown. Includes references to political developments within Spain, Spain's commercial relations with her West Indian possessions and with the U.S., and Spain's naval war with Chile and Peru (1865-1866); and routine records relating to shipping, customs service, and commerce.

Materials in the collection include administrative records, correspondence, financial and statistical reports, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and other materials primarily documenting Office of Civil Rights (OCR) compliance and complaints associated with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, compliance with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), and fair hiring practices for faculty. Dates of the materials range from 1975 to 1988, but a majority of the materials range from 1978-1981.

The collection includes reports, proposals, articles, agendas, brochures, notes, and various materials on the construction and expansion of a multicultural center as well as other social and cultural spaces on campus.

Spider Martin photographs, 1965, 1968 1 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

James "Spider" Martin was an Alabama photojournalist known for his work documenting the American Civil Rights Movement. Collection comprises 44 black-and-white photographs, mostly 8x10 or 11x14 inches, documenting the March 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches. Subjects include civil rights leaders and march participants Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, James Bevel, Coretta Scott King, John Lewis, Bob Mants, Amelia Boynton Robinson, and Hosea Williams, as well as marchers, protesters, counter protesters with signs and Confederate flags, local police, and federal troops. Locations include the Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church in Selma; downtown Selma; the Edmund Pettus Bridge (site of the "Bloody Sunday" violence against protesters on March 7, 1965); Highway 80; downtown Montgomery; and the State Capitol grounds in Montgomery. Three related images are of Alabama governor George C. Wallace speaking during the 1968 U.S. presidential campaign. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.
