Strong Women Organizing Outrageous Projects (SWOOP) was a non-profit organization in Raleigh, NC that performed community service projects to help people and organizations in need of home repair and landscaping. The collection includes a series of photo albums and binders documenting SWOOP projects, as well as administrative materials. The binders include correspondence with partner organizations and SWOOP members as well as newsletters and notices about upcoming projects. Board meeting minutes, organizational efforts in the wake of Hurricane Fran, and publicity materials are also included in the collection.

Stuart Walter Case (1819-1876) was a white store clerk, originally from Indiana, who moved to Arkansas in the late 1830s. This collection consists of his letters home to his father, Thomas Case, which describe Stuart Case's experiences in Fayetteville, Arkansas between 1838-1840. The letters document his eyewitness account of the Trail of Tears through Fayetteville, with discussions of the animosity between different Cherokee factions; the exploitative businesses that sprang up to provision the forced emigrants along their route; and the bustling, diverse, and increasing violent community in Fayetteville.

Stuart Wright (1948-), an author, bibliographer, and publisher, attended Roxboro (N.C.) High School and Wake Forest University, where he received B.A. degrees in German and Music. He received his master's degree in Southern Studies in 1973 and a second master's degree in U.S. History in 1980, both from Wake Forest University. In the late 1970s and through much of the 1980s, Wright served as Lecturer in Education at Wake Forest. The collection consists of materials related to the Virginia writer George Garrett (1929-2008) assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart Wright. The records of the Durham, N.C. organization Student Action with Farmworkers comprise: administrative and event files; correspondence; reports, articles, and other publications; student project files; outreach and teaching materials; photographs, artwork, and scrapbooks; audio and video recordings; and materials related to labor organizing and protests across the U.S. Hundreds of student-led projects document through interviews, essays, photographs, videos, and other materials the lives of migrant farmworkers and their working conditions, mostly in NC and SC but also in VA, TN, and GA. Major themes in the collection include: history, working conditions, and abuses of migrant farmworkers in the U.S.; education and outreach efforts; housing, health, and pesticide safety; leadership development for migrant youth; grassroots theater; labor organizing and boycotts; and service learning. Materials are in English and Spanish. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

The Student Activism Reference Collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. Collection contains materials pertaining to student movements and protests at Duke University in Durham, N.C. Contents are chiefly printed materials and include flyers, clippings, publications, petitions, print outs of chants and slogans, and other items. Major topics include: civil rights; human rights; campus labor issues; corporate divestiture in South Africa; anti-Semitism and racism on campus; and global events such as the Vietnam War. Materials in the collection date from 1934 and are added to the collection on a continuing basis.

The Student Institutional Memory Initiative (SIMI) was a student group co-founded by Philip Moss in 2017. The purpose of the group was to document and preserve the experiences and stories of student activists at Duke. The records include member notes, a mission statement, goals, documents related to an oral history project, and meeting minutes and agendas.

Sixteen digital videocassette tapes documenting the 13 April 2000 conference, "We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest: Ella J. Baker ("Miss Baker") and the Birth of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee," held at Shaw University, in Raleigh, NC.

Collection comprises 5 black-and-white gelatin silver developing-out paper photographs taken by SNCC representatives from the Atlanta, Georgia, regional office. One photograph is uncredited, the others were photographed by Joffré T. Clarke, Bob Fletcher, and Tom Wakayama. They are undated, but probably were taken during the 1960s. Subjects in the images are all African-American, and include an elderly woman picking cotton, a young boy drawing with crayons, a little girl in a group watching others, a man slaughtering hogs, and a group building a house.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) played a major role in the American Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s; its first major photography exhibit was titled "NOW" and opened in New York City in July 1965. Collection consists chiefly of 277 black-and-white photographs in sizes ranging from 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches to 16 x 20 inches, taken by SNCC photographers; a selection of these was used in the SNCC exhibit. Also included are paper records such as correspondence, fliers, brochures, and an exhibit layout diagram. Photographers whose work has been identified in the collection are: Joffré Clarke, Bob Fletcher, Danny Lyon, Fred DeVan, and Tamio Wakayama. The images were chiefly taken in Mississippi; other locations include Georgia, and possibly Alabama and Arkansas. Subjects center on conditions for African Americans in the South, voting rights campaigns, and civil rights marches and rallies; includes images of the 1964 Democratic National Convention, the Mississippi Freedom Party and its own Freedom Vote convention, the Selma-Montgomery March, and large rallies in Washington, D.C. Several images show burned-out buildings and cars, and harassed and bloodied demonstrators. People who have been identified in the photographs include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bob Moses, and Fannie Lou Hamer. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

The Student Organizations Reference Collection dates from 1913 and was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. Materials include subject files, fliers, clippings, along with some organizational records of undergraduate, graduate, and professional student organizations at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The collection does not include fraternities, sororities, affiliated religious organizations, student housing groups, or groups only associated with Trinity College (to 1924).

The Student Papers Reference Collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research. The collection consists primarily of Duke undergraduate student papers on topics concerning Duke University or Durham. The three earliest student papers date from circa 1890, 1895, and 1906, and were written by N. Raine Reed, Fannie W. Carr, and Raymond Browning, respectively. Paper topics present in the collection include: the founding of Duke; the undergraduate curriculum; Duke Chapel; 1969 Allen Building Takeover; Methodism and its relation to Duke University; the 1942 Rose Bowl; desegregation; and gender issues at Duke.

The Student Photograph Album is a scrapbook of 100 black and white photographs, by an unidentified photographer, of students and scenes at Duke University and in North Carolina as well as images of Virginia, Niagara Falls, and unidentified locations. Many images have captions and identifying information and appear to all date between 1934-1936.

Contains the records of the Student Project for University Development (SPUD), a student-run organization dedicated to raising funds for Duke University. SPUD was founded by Duke University undergraduate James Paulette in 1976. The organization's two chief projects were the Bryan University Center and the Reggie Howard Memorial Scholarship Fund. Types of materials include correspondence, memoranda, agendas, posters, clippings, fliers, lists of departmental representatives, financial materials, and proposals. Major subjects include Duke University, Alumni Affairs, University Development, Office of Institutional Advancement, the Bryan Center, the Reggie Howard Memorial Scholarship Fund, fundraising, scholarships, James Paulette, and the Student Project for University Development. Materials range in date from 1976 to 1979. English.

Students for Choice is a student organization dedicated to educating the Duke community about the status of reproductive rights nationally and locally and about available related resources, and to working to protect and uphold the freedom of choice. The Students for Choice Records contains flyers and other event materials, organizational notes, educational literature, and clippings.

The Students of the Caribbean Association (SOCA) began in 1991 and was reorganized after a two-year break in 2003. The mission of the group is to provide a space for the Duke community to celebrate and learn about Caribbean culture. This collection contains photographs of the events hosted by the Students of the Caribbean Association.

Studio Girl Cosmetics Records include promotional materials related to the multi-level marketing and direct sales cosmetics company. Collection includes leaflets and a pamphlet with beauty tips as well as sales team recruitment materials. Also contains an LP record with the voice of company Chairman Harry Taylor.

The Subject Files Reference Collection contains files concerning a variety of subjects common to academic institutions, such as institutional history and governance, diversity, parking, statistics, and so forth. This collection was compiled from a variety of sources by the University Archives for use in reference and research.

Personal papers of longtime Duke administrator Sue Coon documenting her family life and history. Consists chiefly of correspondence, photograph albums, the diary of Jane Dunihue, and the scrapbook of Mary Louise Newburn.

Sugoroku are Japanese games similar to snakes and ladders, which in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were sometimes included in newspapers and children's magazines. Includes 26 sugoroku games (some items are double-sided), primarily dating from the 1910s to 1930s, with a few earlier and later.

The Summer Theater program at Duke was created in 1972; its founding members included English Professor John Clum and Duke Players president Richard E. Cytowic. The collection includes programs, playbills, newspaper clippings, schedules, ticket order forms, posters, advertisements, flyers, pamphlets, box office reports, reviews, and notes related to the Summer Theater program. Materials range in date from 1925-1984, bulk dates 1973-1984.

New York County's Court of Oyer and Terminer and General Gaol Delivery was the court of criminal jurisdiction, especially for crimes punishable by life imprisonment or death. Summons from the Court of Oyer and Terminer and General Gaol Delivery in New York City dated 1785 May 31 for Doctor Charles M. McKnight, James J. Beekman, Sarah Conolly (also spelled Conoly), and Ann McClean (also spelled McClain) to serve as witnesses the following day against Hannah, a Black woman who was indicted for "Murder of a Bastard Child."

The Superior Match Company was founded by Harold Meitus in 1932 in Chicago, Ill, and manufactured Union Label Advertising matchbooks. Collection comprises the company's matchbook advertising catalog no. 956 (192 pp., in binder), along with twenty sales representative's forms, including business and dealer identification cards, commission request forms, mailing labels, business reply and rush order envelopes, order pads, and a brief case order form. The order pads hold copies of a few orders placed in 1960 for businesses in Youngstown, Ohio.

Collection comprises seven letters from Susan B. Anthony to various correspondents, one postcard written to her, a printed item, and a letter by S. J. S. Holden that mentions Anthony, Stanton, and the 1874 National Woman Suffrage Association (N.W.S.A.) convention.

Collection contains two letters Susan B. Anthony wrote on National American Woman Suffrage Association letterhead in February 1905 to Minnie C. Rodey, who was chair of the "Women's Club" in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In the letters, Anthony described informational material she will be sending Rodey, including a history of woman suffrage. In addition, she recommended a process by which the territory would vote on the issue of woman's suffrage before it acquiring statehood, since she considered the legislature and governor more likely to pass it than the general male voters in the state. She added, "... I read yesterday of the number of Indians and Mexicans and negroes that were in the territories. It is amazing that people want to make a state out of a territory composed of a majority of what we should term 'incompetents' Voting should be confined to intelligent beings." She also inquired of mutual friends and recommends her relatives who are visiting Albuquerque.

Collection comprises a letter Susan B. Anthony composed to "Friend Campbell" (Cornelius Bowman Campbell), discussing arrangements for her and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to meet with him and outlining potential discussion of "our political proclivities." Written on letterhead for THE REVOLUTION.

Susan Hill is a North Carolina native, social worker, activist for female reproductive rights, and founder of the National Women's Health Organization. Collection includes newspaper clippings related to abortion and women's health issues, records from the National Women's Health Organization, and audiovisual material. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Susan Ketchin Edgerton is an author, editor, and educator of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Susan Ketchin Papers contain correspondence, manuscripts of her writings and the writings of others, reviews, publications, printed matter, teaching materials, and other papers relating principally to her work with the St. Andrews Review, Southern Exposure, the Algonquin Press, and the Duke Young Writers Camp. Some papers also concern free-lance work. One large group of materials was generated in the process of producing and writing The Christ-Haunted Landscape: Faith and Doubt in Southern Fiction. These materials include research files, audio tapes of interviews with authors featured in the book (Doris Betts, Randall Kenan, Allan Gurganus, Lee Smith, Larry Brown, Sheila Bosworth, and others), and typescripts. Other authors represented in the papers but whose interview tapes are not present are Reynolds Price and Clyde Edgerton. A video featuring Lee Smith is also included.

Samuel Sewall was a judge, businessman, and printer in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Collection comprises an affidavit sworn by Susanna Ramer before Samuel Sewall, testifying "that going up into her Garret this Monday Morning to call her Negro Alexander, she found Anne Staples Servant Maid of Samuel Eaton, in Bed with the said Alexander, which was a great surprise to her, not knowing that such an one was at all in the house. Sworn March, 16 1713 in presence of Anne Staples...." With attestation in a different hand, reading "April 10 1713 Sworn in Court at Boston Att. Davenport."

Susan P. Parrott was a widow who probably resided in Maine during the mid-nineteenth century. Collection comprises an handmade account book with paper covers (35 pages, some blank, with an additional 5 leaves excised) maintained by Susan P. Parrott from 1839-1846, mainly to track her payments to at least 30 women she hired to work for her from one day to several months at a time. It is not clear in what capacity she hired the women, although one, Martha Brackett, was a seamstress.

Dr. Susan Wicklund is a former abortion provider from Wisconsin. The papers chiefly document her professional career, centering on her work in the Midwest, where she operated abortion clinics in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin from the 1990s to 2013. Materials include many items of correspondence from patients, supporters, and opponents; files on national and local abortion rights and women's movement groups; articles and newspaper clippings; conference papers; materials related to anti-abortion groups; legal documents, including court case records; a recording of her 1992 "60 Minutes" television interview, and drafts of her book, This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor (2007). A few clinic documents also exist in the form of leasing records, sample charts, manuals, and anonymized guestbooks. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Suzanne Pharr (b. 1939) is a social justice activist and author. Her papers document her professional life and include writings, speeches, correspondence, interviews, workshop materials, published books, book drafts and production materials, articles related to her research, publicity about her work, and journals documenting her daily work. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Dame Sybil Thorndike was a distinguished British actress best known for her work on stage. In this letter to the actress and playwright Elizabeth Robins, Thorndike thanks her for the gift of some heather from Yorkshire. She also sends her regards and thanks to "Lady Bell" for her support. The letter is addressed to Robins at Rounton Grange, the North Yorkshire estate which was the family home of the writer Florence Bell ("Lady Bell"). Bell and Robins were close friends and collaborators. Thorndike refers to a play; at the time of this letter, she was in rehearsals for the 1922-23 London production of Shelley's The Cenci at the New Theater, directed by her husband, Lewis Casson. This letter connecting three key female figures of the London stage is evidence of the strong support network these women formed in a male-dominated arena.

The papers in this collection include Duke history professor Sydney Nathans' documentation on the Richard Nixon Presidential Library debate, including his participation in Academic Council resolutions regarding the location of the library on Duke's campus; the Greensboro Massacre (1979), when the Ku Klux Klan murdered several people during a shoot-out at an Anti-KKK demonstration planned by the Communist Workers' Party; Nathans' copies of negatives and contact sheets from the Durham bicentennial photography project (1981 and undated); and materials used in the writing of his book A Mind to Stay, including original interviews, transcripts, and other research materials.

Resident of Stockton and San Francisco, California. Collection consists of manuscript and typewritten letters, written primarily to Sylvia Norton from her family, dealing with their financial struggles during the Great Depression. Also contains manuscripts of poetry and short stories written by either Sylvia or Lillian Norton under the name (Frances) Elliott Norton. Correspondence with author and critic Laurence D'Orsay discusses Elliott Norton's writing abilities. There are also a few news clippings, legal documents, and some biographical materials. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Sylvia Wynter (1928- ) is a Jamaican writer, scholar, thinker, and teacher. As a writer, she wrote plays for radio and the stage, as well as a novel. As a professor, she taught at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica; the University of Michigan; the University of California, San Diego; and Stanford University. She has also published numerous essays on many topics from Jamaican history to literary criticism to exploring what it means to be human. The Sylvia Wynter papers contain Wynter's written works from the 1950s through 2018; professional correspondence to and from Wynter from the 1970s through the 2010s; teaching and administrative materials from her time at Stanford University, the University of California at San Diego, and other institutions; materials related to Wynter's participation in conferences, speaking engagements, guest lectures, and other events; and Wynter's reading and research materials.

Synergic Theater was formed as "Project Synergy" at Duke University in 1974, and developed conceptual and experimental theater productions and workshops which were staged in Durham, N.C., New York, and San Francisco. This collection contains materials from Synergic's operations and administration, productions, and workshops. It includes recordings, digitized materials, photographs and scrapbooks, and assorted papers.

The Syria Ministry of Health is the government agency in Syria responsible for the health of the population, including raising awareness of health issues. The Syria Ministry of Health posters includes 14 posters related to COVID-19 dangers and prevention.

The Talent Identification Program (TIP) was established at Duke in 1980. TIP was a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented students grades seven through twelve. The collection includes publications, correspondence, reports, application materials, talent search materials, articles, syllabi, lists of students, flyers, audiovisual materials, promotional materials, guides, manuals, termbooks, and other records.

Filmmaker Lorenzo DeStefano directed and produced a documentary on jazz guitarist Talmage Farlow (1921-1998) titled Talmage Farlow (Productions A-Propos, 1981). The collection contains audio, moving image, and paper materials created and compiled by DeStefano during the production and distribution of the documentary and its related audio recordings.

Tamar Stone is a book artist whose one-of-a-kind works are made from fabric with embroidered text. This collection contains her book drafts, research materials, fabric and embroidery samples, book mock-ups, exhibition catalogs, press clippings, and correspondence with book dealers and collectors. The majority of the collection consists of documentation of the production of her Corset Books and her Bed Books.

The Task Force on Commencement was appointed by President Brodie after the disturbances during the 1989 commencement ceremonies. It was chaired by University Secretary N. Alison Haltom, and included representatives from the undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools' student bodies, administrators, and one parent. The collection contains correspondence, memoranda, reports, clippings, and related records concerning student behavior at the 1989 commencement, and ways of improving future ceremonies.

The Delta Upsilon Chapter of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity was established at Duke University in April 1952. It disbanded in 1981. Types of material include correspondence, minutes, reports, rosters, newsletters, printed material, and clippings. Major topics include student life at Duke University, housing arrangements for campus groups, and general management of a fraternal organization. The bulk of materials are from 1970-1976.

Missionaries to Nigeria for the Southern Baptist Foreign Missions Board, 1955-1962. Family letters, photographs, and diaries from the Taylor family's mission work in Nigeria and their return voyage to the United States. Also includes a selection of photocopied letters from T. J. Bowen to James A. Taylor, 1850-1867, documenting Bowen's life as a missionary to Africa.
