The Mark Danner Papers date from 1970 to 2004 and focus predominately on Danner's coverage of Haiti during the period of unrest that followed President Jean-Claude ("Baby Doc") Duvalier's exile in 1986. Guy Davenport (1927-2005) was a writer and illustrator from South Carolina. Collection includes letters from Davenport to Abbot "Tom" Gleason, and to Duke University secretary Dorothy E. Roberts. Henry Philip David (1923-2009) was a pioneering researcher in the field of reproductive behavior and public policy and is known for his longitudinal studies on the psychological aspects of abortion, as well as his extensive international collaboration and research. He founded the Transnational Family Research Institute in Bethesda, M.D., in 1972. Collection includes materials documenting David's professional life and research, as well as his work with the Transnational Family Research Institute and coordinating the Psychosocial Workshops.

Tobacco collection, 1828-1996 5.4 Linear Feet

The Tobacco Collection contains material assembled by library staff related to the manufacturing, sale, and use of tobacco in the United States, particularly in North Carolina and Virginia. There are also items referring to tobacco cultivation and processing. Printed advertising predominates, but the contents also include items that are not paper products. Typical paper-based items include cigarette and cigar advertising trade cards of W. Duke, Sons & Co., Lorillard, Liggett and Myers, John Player and Sons, and various other American and British companies; tobacco advertisements by Krueger and Brown of N.Y.; and souvenir tobacco albums published by Allen & Ginter. Other forms of advertising in the collection include broadsides, pamphlets, books, leaflets, letters, envelopes, cigar and cigarette boxes and labels, cans, a plate, wrappers, labels, and catalogs. Images include birds, animals, battle scenes, and persons, including a series on "African Types."

German broadsides collection, 1870-1990 and undated, bulk 1920s 5.8 Linear Feet (Approximately 519 items)

The German broadsides collection spans the years 1870-1990, with the majority of items dating from the 1920s. Broadsides (single-sided announcements and texts) predominate, but there are also several diplomas, leaflets, handbills, campaign publications, political brochures, propaganda posters, and other ephemera documenting the political, economic, and social conditions in Germany, Eastern Europe, Russia, and China, particularly during the Weimar Republic. Many of the broadsides relate to elections during the 1920s and the legacy of World War I as well as the political implications of women's suffrage during that time. Political parties represented include the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, the German Democratic Party, and the German National People's Party, as well as several smaller parties. The majority come from cities across Germany, with Leipzig and Berlin strongly represented. Additional materials include Allied propaganda leaflets and Holocaust exhibition posters, as well as materials relating to the assassination of German Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau in 1922, and several diplomas, 1870-1924 relating to the Von Baudissin family. The newspaper clippings and other publications in this collection focus on political events both in Germany and abroad, in particular assassinations and political violence. They include announcements, analysis and propaganda, exhortations, and numerous political cartoons. The materials are arranged according to geographical area. Also included are political party publications relating to local, state, and national elections in Germany between 1919 and 1930, as well as items relating to international events between 1900 and 1930. The collection also includes a small series of Nazi propaganda dating from 1939 to 1943. Closely related to the German Broadsides collection.

Italian Cultural Posters collection, 1930s-1980s and undated bulk 1970-1989 4 Linear Feet 115 Items

Collection consists of 115 Italian cultural and political posters, the bulk of which date from the 1970s and 1980s. Nearly half of the posters were printed by the Italian Communist Party (Pci) offices in Milan and Rome, chiefly in the 1970s, and address themes such as control of the media (particularly television and newspapers), the environment, elections, educational reform, political radicalism, labor issues, voting rights, patronage and other forms of corruption, and taxation. Many posters display the images and words of political activists from around the world. Some posters refer to Francoism, to American leaders such as President Nixon, and to the Vietnam War. Many of the latter express an anti-American position. Other posters in the collection advertise art and design exhibits, and announce celebrations and civic events. Also includes a set of 38 color slides of elections broadsides (1986-1987) posted in public spaces in Italy.

The materials comprising the British Correspondence and Miscellany Collection are dated from 1556 to 1972 (bulk 1740-1890). The papers are arranged into the following series: Correspondence, 1556-1972 and undated; Subject Files, 1699-1902 and undated; Pictures, 1795-1921 and undated; and Miscellaneous Material, 1814-1836 and undated An artificial collection, the papers are, for the most part, unrelated by provenance. The collection consists chiefly of correspondence, and topics include numerous political events and activities of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries in Great Britain and the colonies (particularly India and Africa).

Bruce Davidson photographs, 1955-2008 6 Linear Feet (4 boxes)

Bruce Davidson (b. 1933) is an American-born photographer, and a member of the Magnum Photo cooperative agency. Collection consists of 229 photographic prints, mostly black-and-white, with color work present in several series. Subjects range widely, with a focus on human interactions, minority and disenfranchised communities, urban street photography, and landscapes influenced by human activity. Locations include Chicago; Paris; England, Wales, and Scotland; Sicily and Venice; Los Angeles and the California Pacific Coast Highway; and New York City, including East Harlem, Central Park, the subway, and other locations. Also included is a large series of portraits chiefly of celebrities, and images deriving from commercial assignments. Several portraits of African Americans from Mississippi, South Carolina, and New York City were taken in 1962 while Davidson was documenting civil rights actions. Other short series feature nude female studies, French fashion shows, and scenes from the film production of Zabriskie Point by Antonioni. Sizes range from approximately 6x9 to 20x24 inches. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

James D. Davidson (1808-1882) was a white lawyer, college trustee, and Confederate commissary agent of Lexington, Virginia. The bulk of this collection dates from 1836-1859 and consists of James D. Davidson's professional correspondence regarding collection of debts and financial judgements, real estate transactions, and other legal matters. Items directly related to slavery include a letter (August 14, 1857) discussing Dr. Frederick Cousins, a free Black physician seeking payment for the treatment of an enslaved man named Henry. The collection also includes some personal papers, including a few letters pertaining to local sentiments and supply issues during the Civil War.

The Davis family, originally of Hampton, Virginia, is a prominent African-American family whose members include authors, journalists, photographers, filmmakers, composers, and educators who have made significant contributions to American history and culture. The collection includes photograph albums, loose photographs, and writings documenting the history of the African American Davis family in Hampton, Virginia from the 1930s to the 1950s as well as family members at later points; it also includes materials related to family history and genealogy that span the period from 1876 to the 1920s. Family members featured within the collection include William Roscoe Davis, Andrew Davis, Arthur P. Davis, Sr., Georgia Campbell Neal, Willie Louise Barbour Davis, Collis H. Griffith J. Davis photographs and films, 1946-1991 6 Linear Feet (7 boxes; 1 film reel container)

Griff Davis (1923-1993) was a photojournalist, diplomat, and film maker from Atlanta, Georgia. The collection contains photographic materials and papers related to three photo essays illustrated by Davis: one on African American writer Langston Hughes; another on artists Hale Woodruff and Charles Alston; and one on the Palmer Memorial Institute, a private preparatory school for African Americans in Sedalia, N.C. Films in the collection were taken by Davis and include two home movies and six color and black-and-white 16mm films documenting people, politics, and agricultural life in Liberia during William Tubman's presidency in the early 1950s. Completing the collection is a photo album, "Progress in Liberia, Nov. 1949-Feb. 1950," containing twenty large black-and-white photographs, assembled to promote a partnership between the government of Liberia and the Liberia Mining Company. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The papers of John Hobart Davis span the years 1832-1920, but the bulk of the collection is the Civil War correspondence, 1862-1865. Davis chiefly wrote the letters to his sister, Elisa E. Davis, with a few letters to other family members, such as his brother Frank. Private Davis was stationed at Camp Beaufort, Me. (1861, Dec. - 1862, Feb.); Ship Island, Miss. (1862, Mar. - 1863, Feb.); Fort Jackson, La. (1863, Feb. - Aug.); Pass Manchoc, La. (1863, Aug. -Sept.); Fort Stephens, La. (1863, Oct. - 1864, July); and Washington, D.C. (1864, Aug. - 1865, Apr.).

Lois Wright Richardson Davis family papers, 1851-1912 and undated 0.75 Linear Feet

Working-class New England family that was involved with both the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The mother, Lois Wright was born in Northfield, Massachusetts and died in Lowell, Massachusetts. She had at least seven children with her first husband Luther Richardson. The bulk of the collection is made up of letters between Davis and her children during the Civil War. In the late 1850s two of Lois Davis' daughters moved to Mobile, Alabama and their husbands served in the Confederate Army. Two of Lois Davis' sons fought with Massachusetts regiments, Charles Henry at first with the 6th Massachusetts Infantry, and then both Charles Henry and Luther with the 26th Massachusetts Infantry. Includes letters written from Ship Island, MS (1861-1862) and New Orleans, LA (1862-1864); and material on the riots in Baltimore, MD, and battles at Manassas, Malvern Hill, Petersburg, Winchester, VA, and the Shenandoah Valley, Baton Rouge and Port Hudson, LA, Sabine Pass, TX, and along the Mississippi and Red Rivers. The letters include descriptions of living and working conditions; illnesses; deaths; and thoughts on politics, race, and religion. Also includes letters about life after the Civil War. Daughter Eunice, whose husband died while serving the Confederacy, remarried to William Smiley Connolly, an Afro-Caribbean and mixed-race ship captain. They married in Dracut, Massachusetts, and she moved with him to Grand Cayman Island. Her letters, 1870-1875, describe their life in Grand Cayman. There are additional papers relating to Charles Henry Richardson's life in Lowell, Massachusetts where he worked in a textile mill and served as an Alderman.

Francis Warrington Dawson family papers, 1386-1963, bulk 1859-1950 30 Linear Feet

Journalist, of Charleston, S.C., and Versailles, France. The collection contains the papers of Francis Warrington Dawson, who was born Austin John Reeks; his wife, Sarah Ida Fowler Morgan Dawson; and their son, Francis Warrington Dawson II, better known as Warrington Dawson. The papers are primarily literary in character but also include many letters. Francis's papers are primarily autobiographical with information about his Civil War service, travels, courtship, and career. Also present are Morgan family papers describing social life in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., in the second half of the 19th century, especially during Reconstruction. Warrington Dawson materials document his work with the American Embassy in Paris and describes French life and politics. Also present is material from his work as director of French Research for Colonial Williamsburg, Inc., including copies (made from the originals at Colonial Williamsburg) of original documents pertaining to French participation in the American Revolution. Also included are copies of 18th century maps of North America, Williamsburg, Va., and positions of the French and American armies in New York and Virginia during the Revolutionary War.

Laura Dean papers, 1966-2007 30.34 Linear Feet

Laura Dean (b. 1945) is an American choreographer and composer. In 1972, she established her company, Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, where she created the choreography for forty works, and in most instances, created the music as well. A number of Dean's pieces were also accompanied by the music of Steve Reich. Dean continued to create works for her company until 2000. She received the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award in recognition of her accomplishments as a choreographer and composer in 2008. Collection includes photographic prints, contact sheets, negatives, slides, clippings, programs, printed materials, posters, VHS videotapes, and an audiocassette.

Washington Dearmont papers, 1787-1944 and undated, bulk 1851-1930 5 Linear Feet Approximately 5200 Items

Farmer and salt agent, of Clarke Co., Va. Routine family and business correspondence, some of it relating to Dearmont’s position as a salt agent. A few Civil War letters contain orders preparatory to the march on Harper’s Ferry and concern the procurement of salt and horses. Later correspondence concerns Mamie Dearmont and relates in part to women in politics in Colorado, 1912. Other topics of correspondence include Virginia politics, and school life at Eastern College, Front Royal, Va., and at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. There are also business records of the following persons: George Weaver, a merchant at White Post; Greenbury W. Weaver; the postmaster at White Post; G. C. Hamill; and William Berry of Clarke County. The earliest dates refer to financial ledgers and other volumes; one of these contains ledgers of G. C. Hamill and of Washington Dearmont.

Editor, publisher, statistician, and pro-secessionist residing in New Orleans, Louisiana. Collection comprises business and personal correspondence, diary, and other papers. Much of the material relates to "De Bow's Review," an agricultural and economic newspaper and pro-secession, pro-slavery publication which he founded and edited from 1846-1867, and to De Bow's position as agent for the Confederacy's cotton and produce loan, with many letters to and from Christopher G. Memminger and George A. Trenholm concerning details of the loan. Includes early items apparently collected in connection with De Bow's statistical work, essays written while a student at Charleston College, lectures on temperance, and a scrapbook of accounts of Civil War campaigns. Correspondents include John W. Daniel, Charles E. Fenner, George Fitzhugh, Charles Gayarré, Alexander D. James Monroe Deems was a musician, composer, teacher and native of Baltimore, Maryland. Collection includes three manuscript musical scores for piano. One entitled "Glissando March, Jas. M. Deems" (3 pp.), may have been written by Deems. Another score entitled "Pas-de-deux" (7 pp.) bears the penciled notations "Auber, Performed by Mad. Celeste, Arranged by Jas. Deems." The third score (2 pp), untitled, is a march. It may or may not relate to Deems.

J. De Fere document, Malines, Belgium, to Dr. Louveaux, 1897, Apr. 17 1 items

DS. De Fere, writing as "le Secretaire de Milice" requests that Louveaux sign and return three attached statements of health. Verso of document bears an undated draft of a letter by an unidentified physician, who, in spite of patient's consent, refuses to comply with a medical insurance company's request for the patient's medical history. The writer cites "le loi du secret medical" as upheld by "l'Association generale des medecins de France", which prohibits the release of patients' medical histories to medical insurance companies.

Collection comprises 4 scrapbook pages the Delannoy's compiled to document their lives during World War I. Includes a map of France with the front outlined, along with the Delannoy ration cards for sugar and gasoline, safe-passage documents for Paul and Jeanne (one set contains their black-and-white photographs), and insurance papers they signed recognizing the risk of war in areas they traveled. Three pieces of French paper money are attached to one page. The final page contains an undated poster from the Paris Chamber of Commerce regarding war loans.

The collection chiefly documents DeLapp's long-term involvement with the North Carolina Republican Party at the state and local level. While correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection, there are also some legal and financial papers, writings and speeches, printed material, and clippings. Being Chair of the North Carolina Republican Party (1942-1950) and legal counsel to the party (1950-1964), provided DeLapp access to state party leaders, which is reflected by the correspondents that include J. E. Broyhill, Wilmer D. Mizell, William E. Cobb, and Jesse Helms.

Richard Deming papers, 1939-1988 and undated 13.6 Linear Feet

Richard Deming (1915-1983) was an American crime and non-fiction writer. His papers primarily contain manuscripts by Deming, including short stories, novels, t.v. scripts and screenplays, publisher's pitches, along with plays, an article, poetry, and one letter. Some of the novels are written under the pseudonyms or with coauthors. All manuscripts are typescript, except for an incomplete, handwritten novel. The papers also include incomplete runs of mixed serials, all featuring published writing by Deming. These include scattered or single issues of each title and some duplicates. Items with dates past Deming's death in 1983 feature reprints as well as marketing materials for a novel. The collection also includes poetry and a novel-length manuscript written by Richard Deming's uncle, Rollin Gregg Deming.
