Hoof 'n' Horn Student Musical Theater Company was first formed in 1936 at Duke University. The organization's purpose is to provide the highest possible standard of amateur theater to the Duke University and Triangle Area communities, to serve as an educational vehicle to provide practical experience in all aspects of musical theater, and to be responsible for all necessary assets for the production of shows which it sponsors. The collection features musical scores, orchestrations, sheet music, scripts, programs, posters, a scrapbook, video and audio recordings, and administrative materials. Horace Trumbauer Architectural Drawings collection, 1924-1958 9 Linear Feet 11.3 Gigabytes

From 1924 through 1958 the architectural firm of Horace Trumbauer of Philadelphia, Pa. was hired to design much of Duke University's East and West campuses. Horace Trumbauer, William O. Frank, and Julian Abele were the firm's main designers. Frank Clyde Brown, S.W. Myatt and A.C. Lee were administrators of construction at Duke University during this time. Some of the buildings designed by the firm are the Duke University Chapel, the Allen Administration Building, Cameron Indoor Stadium, Baldwin Auditorium, the East Campus Union Building, the East Campus Central Heating Plant Complex, the Carr Building (formerly known as the Class Room Building), the Medical School and Hospital, the Nurses' Home, the Law School, the School of Religion, the Chemistry Building, and the Botany and Biology Building. The firm also designed the Giles, Alspaugh, Pegram, Bassett, and Brown residence halls (formerly known as Dormitories 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively). Included in the collection are blueprints and printed material relating to the planning and construction of buildings at Duke University from 1924 to 1958.

Horse & Buggy Press print and graphic design projects, 1996-2017 4.0 Linear Feet (7 boxes)

Collection of fine art print and graphic design projects by Horse & Buggy Press in Durham, North Carolina, commissioned chiefly by non-profit organizations, small firms, individual authors and artists, and community events organizers. Formats include catalogs, broadsides, posters, newsletters, pamphlets and brochures, programs, and jacket and packaging designs for six audio and film recordings. Smaller projects include exhibit and book announcements, business cards, invitations, and menus for local restaurants. Chiefly consists of letterpress work, but there are also examples of offset and digitally printed items. Many projects involved the work of other artists and designers, and many were printed in limited editions. Content often includes poetry, prose excerpts, and quotes. Books and zines printed by Horse & Buggy Press have been separated from this collection and individually described for the Duke University Libraries catalog.

Houston Riot of 1917 trial photograph, 1917 1.2 Linear Feet (1 item)

W. C. Lloyd was a photographer. Collection comprises a gelatin silver photograph taken during the trail at Fort Sam Houston following the Houston Riot of 1917 or Camp Logan riot. It shows 64 African-American members of the Army's 24th Infantry being court martialed for mutiny and the murder of 17 people during the riot. The photographer included description written onto the negative. The back is stamped with the Lloyd Photo Co. address.

Howard Kelly Collection of Florence Nightingale prints and photographs, circa 1840-1949 and undated 1 Linear Feet 60 Items

Howard Atwood Kelly was a surgeon, gynecologist, professor, author, collector of medical memorabilia, and founder of the Kensington Hospital in Philadelphia; he served as the first professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine. Among his interests was the life of Florence Nightingale and her memorialization through images. The Howard Kelly Collection of Florence Nightingale Prints and Photographs represents the collecting efforts of Howard Atwood Kelly, a surgeon, professor, author, and collector of medical memorabilia. The collection comprises 60 images and other memorializations associated with Florence Nightingale, 19th century nurse and healthcare reformer. Image formats include engravings, photographs (some of which are albumens), lithographs, mezzo tints, prints, and postcards; in addition, there are photographic and slide reproductions of drawings, lithographs, engravings, crayon drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Almost all the images are mounted on cardstock boards. Portrayals of Nightingale span her adult lifetime; there are images of her during her early career as a nurse in Britain, and providing nursing care for wounded soldiers in Turkey during the Crimean War. There are also images of her birth and death places. Also included are one piece of popular sheet music (1857) and typed explanatory notes. Reproductions also accompany many of the images. Arranged in rough chronological order by date of publication or creation. Acquired as part of the History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

Howard Scott papers, 1921-1984 and undated, bulk 1930s-1950s 4 Linear Feet 600 Items

The Howard Scott Papers span the years 1921-1984, although the bulk of materials covers the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, documenting Scott's career in outdoor advertising as a billboard designer and graphic artist. The papers include correspondence (including two letters from Norman Rockwell), newspaper and magazine clippings, awards, and school yearbooks relating to Scott's personal and professional life, in addition to photographs, sketches, lithographs and reprints of outdoor advertising images for clients such as Amoco, Chesterfield (Liggett and Myers), Esso and Mobil oil products, DeSoto, Ford, and Nash automobiles, H.J. Heinz Co., Lever Brothers, Pabst and Schlitz beers, World War II-era programs such as the USO and Navy recruitment, and the 1939-1940 World's Fair. The collection is arranged into four series--the General Papers Series, the Photographs Series, the Graphic Design, Artwork and Sketches Series, and the Memorabilia Series.

Howland-Mcintosh Family papers, 1713-1997 (bulk 1830-1989) 6.3 Linear Feet 2,147 Items

Families originally from Carteret and Moore Counties, N.C. Correspondence; legal files, including deeds and wills; photographs; many genealogical materials; financial papers; postcards; paper currency; two scrapbooks; and school papers, all relating to the Howland and the McIntosh families from Carteret, Durham, and Moore Counties, N.C. Photographs include tintypes, albumen prints, and one daguerrotype. Many legal files pertain to a lengthy court case involving the transfer of family property on Shackleford Banks, N.C. to the federal government. Oversize materials include aerial photographs and land surveys of Shackleford Banks and other family properties, and photostats of early deeds. Though several photographs and all the currency date from the Civil War, the only other original documentation on the families' Civil War activities is a signed oath of allegiance to the Union dated 1865, and a few letters referring at length to the circumstances surrounding the confiscation of one Howland's property in Beaufort, N.C. during the war, and his attempts at legal restitution. William F. Howland (1876-1951) married Mary Elizabeth McIntosh (1878-1964) in 1903. The collection contains much of their correspondence. Other correspondence includes World War I letters from a McIntosh son, Leland Carson. The addition (04-129)(25 items, 1.5 lin. ft.; dated [1870s]-[1960s]) consists primarily of materials, including a scrapbook, photo album, letters, and travel journals, kept by Mary Howland Dawson from the 1950 "Youth Caravan to Germany" sponsored by the Methodist Conference of North Carolina. Also includes two family photograph albums, with images dating back to the 1870s; clippings about various family members; and an historical sketch of Salem United Methodist Church in Garland, N.C. This addition is unprocessed and is not represented in the finding aid.

Hubert H. and Leona T. Hayes papers, 1891-1983, bulk 1925-1975 21 Linear Feet (37 boxes)

Hubert H. and Leona T. Hayes were actors, authors, and partners in the founding and production of the Mountain Youth Jamboree music and dance festival in Asheville, N.C. (1940s-1973). Collection comprises personal and business correspondence; plays, stories, articles, and minstrel scripts written by Hubert Hayes and others, as well as publicity, ephemera, production records, and photographs relating to the Asheville, N.C. Mountain Youth Jamboree (1940s-1973), to programs at Asheville's City Auditorium; and to the production of Hayes' outdoor drama about Daniel Boone, Thunderland, and plays such as Tight Britches. There are also photographs, chiefly black-and-white, of family and friends, actors in blackface, the Trinity College (Durham, N.C.) football team in 1922 or 1923, author Thomas Wolfe, 1937, and entertainers of the time. Other materials include a photograph album of Hubert's youth (1920s), and many scrapbooks documenting Humbert and Leona's theater and entertainment work, and Leona Hayes's career and her close association with Duke University Libraries and its director, Benjamin Powell. The materials speak to the history of Asheville, N.C., western N.C. life and social customs, and Appalachian and African American cultures as expressed in popular entertainment of the 1920s-1960s.

Huck Gutman papers on the Silent Vigil, 1968 0.3 Linear Feet

Stanley "Huck" Gutman received his master's and doctoral degrees from Duke University in 1967 and 1971. Gutman had a career in academia at the University of Vermont from 1971 to 2018 and in politics as advisor and chief of staff for Bernie Sanders. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Duke University students organized a peaceful protest for racial equality in April 1968. Up to 1,400 students slept on the Chapel Quad, food services and housekeeping employees went on strike, and most students boycotted the dining halls in support of the employees. The collection contains materials related to the Duke Silent Vigil of 1968 including a notebook of handwritten notes and transcripts from committee meetings. Also consists of a partial narrative of the Silent Vigil, photocopies of memos from Duke administration, and a copy of the pamphlet, "The Duke Trustees and Labor."

Hughes-Gray Family papers, 1805-1926 3.6 Linear Feet 1,114 Items

Family with publishing connections in Maryland. Ezekiel Hughes was editor of the HERALD in Frederick, Maryland. Jeremiah Hughes owned the NILES NATIONAL REGISTER, and other publishing concerns. Principally correspondence of the Hughes and Gray familes of Baltimore, Annapolis, and Frederick, Md. Pervasive topics include personal and family matters, Md. and national politics, and religion. Topics occurring less frequently include finances related to the publishing business and the marketing of volumes, the Civil War, city missions for the poor, dealings with Native Americans, and Communism. The collection also includes 31 volumes of notes and diaries compiled by Ellis Hughes, chief anatomist at the University of Md., over the period of roughly 1830-1865. His 1865 diary makes reference to Lincoln's assassination and the capture of Jefferson Davis. The remaining five volumes were compiled by Jeremiah's daughter Susanna Hughes, who herself entertained literary aspirations. These volumes are a mixture of diary, devotional, literary copybook, scrapbook, and original composition.

Hugh Gladney Grant papers, 1847-1939 15 Linear Feet

Hugh G. Grant was an American diplomat originally from Alabama. He served as U.S. Minister to Albania, 1935-1939. With the exception of his diary, these papers are largely Grant's correspondence and other records from his service as U.S. Minister to Albania, 1935-1939. His extensive diary covers this period, but most of it, as does some of his correspondence and other records, covers the period (1927-1933) while he was secretary to Sen. Hugo L. Black. Other topics covered in detail include the roles of Senators Heflin and Black, Alabama and National Democratic politics, the Depression, particularly in Alabama, the Bonus March on Washington in 1932, Albania and its King Zog, administration of the U.S. Legation in that country, and the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. In his diary, he gives opinions of many people, including Senator Black, Neville Chamberlain, King Zog, and Charles Lindbergh. Between 1933 and 1935, he was in the Division of Western European Affairs in the Department of State, and that service is also covered in this collection. A collection of photographs of Albania, various other places, and some family photos are included. There are a few clippings, and some personal correspondence of Grant and of Mrs. Hugh G. Grant.

Hugh Mangum photographs, circa 1890-1922 10 Linear Feet (38 boxes; 2 oversize folders) 2 Gigabytes

Hugh Mangum was a commercial portrait photographer from Durham, North Carolina. Collection comprises 937 glass plate negatives and printed black-and-white photographs taken by Hugh Mangum from about 1890 to 1922 as he traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia and in photography studios he and partners established in Durham, N.C., and Roanoke, Pulaski, and East Radford, Virginia. Localities known to have been visited by Mangum in N.C. include Winston-Salem, High Point, Raleigh, Reidsville, Lexington, Durham, and Greensboro; in Virginia, Christiansburg, Martinsville, East Radford, and Pulaski. The images are chiefly individual and group portraits of mostly unidentified women, children, and men, either in unidentified studio settings or outdoors. Most are white men and women, but there are also many African Americans and others who may be multi-racial. Hugh Mangum and his wife are present in several images. There are several street scenes identified as Radford, Virginia, as well as Warrenton (probably N.C.), and Christiansburg, Virginia. Some images feature houses, barns, mills, outdoor social gatherings, and animals. The last dated photograph in the collection is a mounted print of Mangum's body in an open casket, 1922. Of the photographic prints, there are 55 prints made from selected negatives, and 50 inkjet digital prints from a 2012 exhibit. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Hugo Leander Blomquist was professor and chair of the Botany Department at Duke University from 1921-1957. The collection includes correspondence between H.L. Blomquist and his wife Margaret during the 1920s and during H.L. Blomquist's service in the Army during World War I, class notes, North Carolina maps, as well as drawings and photographs of his book The Grasses of North Carolina. The collection ranges in date from 1912-2000.

Massarik was a member of the Bund Juedischer Frontsoldaten Österreichs, in Vienna, Austria. Collection comprises Massarik's membership booklet, written in German, with monthly activity stamps between 1935-1937. Founded in 1932, the Austrian association of Jewish frontline fighters (Bund Juedischer Frontsoldaten O¨sterreichs) was founded to combat antisemitism, including reminders of the part played by Jewish soldiers in World War I, and had about 20,000 members.

The Humanities Council of Duke University was created in 1961 to give attention to various matters affecting the humanities departments as a whole, including the advancement of research, interdepartmental and inter-institutional programs, and support for various humanistic activities. The Humanities Council records consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, clippings, and printed programs relating to planning, resource allocation, curriculum, and state of the humanities at Duke University from 1961 to 1979. Major subjects include graduate studies in anthropology, the Department of Music, the Museum of Art, medieval and renaissance studies, the American Comparative Literature Association, the Cooperative Program in the Humanities between Duke and the University of North Carolina, and the National Humanities Center. "Hum Sab Ayodhya" exhibit panels on the Ayodhya region and destruction of the mosque, and related protest posters, Uttar Pradesh, India, after 1993-2000 3.5 Linear Feet (3 oversize folders; 1 box)

Collection consists of 37 large paper sheets bearing reduced-size reproductions of 83 panels that formed a 1993 exhibit narrating the history, culture, and customs of the Aydhoya region in India, now part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was organized by the curator Ram Rahman and SAHMAT (Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust), a New Delhi-based collective of Indian artists, writers, and activists against communalism and violent extremism. Also includes 47 posters protesting extremist violence, created by the same organization. The exhibit illustrates the origins of the Babri Masjid mosque complex and its destruction by Hindu extremists in December 1992. The black-and-white and color reproductions, most without captions, include 16th century paintings; regional maps; plans and large color photographs of the mosque complex; details of sculptures, scripts, and reliefs; reproductions of English accounts; and photographs of area inhabitants as well as individuals associated with regional politics. There are also several texts in Hindi. The sheets measure approximately 28 1/4 x 38 1/4 inches. Posters are sized approximately 17 x 21 3/4 inches. Detailed information on the original 1993 exhibit and its historical context is found in a 2012 publication on the exhibit, available in the Duke Libraries.

Hypes family papers, 1700s-2010 4 Linear Feet (6 boxes; 1 oversize folder) Approximately 2250 Items

Materials from the branch of the Hypes family that descended from Henry Hypes of Xenia, Ohio: Samuel Henry Hypes (1826-1917); his son, William Findlay Hypes; his grandson, Samuel Loomis Hypes; and his great-grandson, William P. Hypes. Collection includes a wide range of material from the Hypes family, particularly William Findlay Hypes, Samuel Loomis Hypes, and William P. Hypes. William Findlay Hypes' materials highlight his career at Marshall Fields and Co. of Chicago and his service as President of the Y.M.C.A. of Chicago, with emphasis on his family's world tour on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. in 1924-1925. Hundreds of postcards and photographs collected by the family are contained in the papers, including images from India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), China, Europe, Egypt, and many more places, most unlabeled. Some material from Samuel Loomis Hypes' army service during World War I is also included, the most noteworthy being 24 black and white photographs featuring crowds awaiting the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and the shipping of troops back to the United States, including photographs of African American soldiers. Materials from William P. Hypes relate to his work with the Y.M.C.A. in the mid-twentieth century. The family's research into their genealogy and family history, unidentified family photographs, and smaller amounts of correspondence and material from other family members are also included.

Nancy Ida Grady, a native of Asheville, N.C., graduated from Duke University's Woman's College in 1928. Scrapbook contains photographs, postcards, calling cards, invitations, programs, poems, and other memorabilia. Among the programs are several from church services in Durham and Asheville, theatre productions including performances by the Taurian Players and the YWCA, and several guest lectures at Duke. Also present are exams, quizzes, and study questions from courses at Duke in Bible study, religions of China and Japan, Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Ida Saxton McKinley letters, to Dr. Mitchell, 1901, 1907 2 items

LS. Personal letters by Ms. McKinley to her former doctor, S. Weir Mitchell. In the first letter, written before her husband's assassination, she thanks Mitchell for a copy of his book "Hugh Wynne". In the second, she hopes that Mitchell will be able to visit Canton, Ohio, for the dedication of a memorial to her husband.

There are also copies of the family's newsletter, and some of Knox's correspondence.

The Inabelle Graves Coleman Papers, 1942-1981 (bulk 1952-1957), contain letters and more than 300 photographs documenting her life as a female Baptist missionary in Shanghai, China, and Taipei, Taiwan. Coleman was a school administrator, teacher, and author who lived much of her life abroad in service for the Southern Baptist Convention. Written almost entirely to family members, the letters date from 1946 to 1957, and contain information about her daily life and work; most were sent from Taipei, although some from Shanghai are also included.

Independent Aid, Inc. records, 1934-1954 6.4 Linear Feet 314 Items

Independent Aid, Inc. was the first charitable foundation established by Doris Duke, daughter of businessman and philanthropist James Buchanan (J.B.) Duke. It was incorporated in Delaware in October, 1934. Although Miss Duke had limited direct involvement with Independent Aid, its disbursements reflected her persistent interests in the welfare of women and children, education, social work and mental health, and early family planning efforts. The foundation’s daily operations were administered largely by Marian Paschal, who served as Secretary until her death in 1946, and by her successor, Georgea T. Furst. Independent Aid, Inc. became the Doris Duke Foundation in 1951. The collection spans the years 1934 to 1954, beginning with the establishment of Independent Aid, Inc. and including administrative entries through the first years of the Doris Duke Foundation. Journals, cashbooks, ledgers, and minute books comprise the majority of the collection; these detail contributions to the foundation as well as disbursements. The remaining materials include correspondence, the foundation’s original by-laws, federal tax forms, financial records and lists of stock holdings, and memoranda documenting daily operations.

India and East India Company papers, 1691-1830 0.5 Linear Feet 55 Items

The East India Company was an English joint-stock company formed in 1600 that ruled portions of South Asia until 1858. This collection contains over 55 documents including miscellaneous legal papers, correspondence, receipts, and extracts largely relating to the East India Company's operations and employees; three documents relating to Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nabob of Arcot (1745-1795); manuscripts relating to Sir Robert Chambers (1737-1803), who traveled to India in 1774 as one of the first justices of the Supreme Court at Calcutta; and a petition written by the wife of Almas Ali Khan, an important administrator in Awadh and one of the key figures in the trial of Warren Hastings. These manuscripts seem to have formerly been part of Sir Thomas Phillipps noted collection.

The records of the documentary project Indivisible: Stories of American Community span the dates 1988-2002. Through documentary photographs and oral histories, project records, videos, and other materials, the collection documents the social conditions in twelve American communities as well as the history of the project, which explored civil activism, struggle, and change in the following locations: the North Pacific Coast of Alaska; Ithaca, N.Y.; San Francisco, California; Navajo Nation, Arizona and New Mexico; Eau Claire, South Carolina; Delray Beach, Florida; Western North Carolina; Stony Brook, N.Y.; San Juan, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and the Yaak Valley, Montana. The photographers are Dawoud Bey, Bill Burke, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Lucy Capehart, Lynn Davis, Terry Evans, Lauren Greenfield, Joan Liftin, Reagan Louie, Danny Lyon, Sylvia Plachy, and Eli Reed. The project was sponsored by the Center for Documentary Studies of Duke University and the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, and co-directed by Tom Rankin and Trudi Stack. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Also includes husband Francis MacKinnon's WWI scrapbook and letters to family written during his military service in Europe; sister Louise Stephens' personal correspondence, photographs, portraits, mementos, and scrapbooks (ca. 1912-1937); courtship letters of Inez MacKinnon's parents, Jefferson Davis Stephens and Mae Inez Yarborough (ca. 1900); Jefferson Stephens' diary (ca. 1899-1926); and 19th-century papers of the Stephens and Yarborough families, including an 1821 court order by the Territory of Florida. Informer Group advertisement--Largest Negro Circulation in the South!, 1943 1 items

The Informer Group was a publishing company for African American newspapers in the U.S. southeast, based in Houston, Tex. The advertisement appeared in v. 205, no. 1 (Oct. 1, 1943) issue of Printers' Ink publication and proclaimed "Largest Negro Circulation in the South" to encourage mainstream advertisers to place ads in the Houston Informer and other Informer Group newspapers. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Ingrid Bengis papers, 1930-2016 14 Linear Feet (10 boxes) 11 Megabytes (24 files)

Ingris Bengis was a white writer, poet, and fishmonger. This collection documents Bengis's life and work in New York City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine. The collection includes drafts, poetry, and published works (including I Have Come Here to Be Alone and Metro Stop Dostoevsky). The bulk of this collection contains correspondence, including letters to and from Bengis, relating to her personal life; teaching; running Ingrid Bengis Seafood; and her 2003 court case regarding her Wooster Street Apartment in New York. Bengis's papers also include photographs of Bengis and her travels, clippings about Bengis as a writer and fishmonger, materials related to her teaching at St. Petersburg State University and Fulbright grant to Russia, as well as personal diaries, journals, and ledgers from her seafood business.
