John L. Lievsay was an educator, author, and noted authority on Italian Renaissance literature. He was a Professor Emeritus of English at Duke University from 1962-1975. Major subjects include all aspects of Renaissance scholarship, Lievsay's career as a professor of English, and his involvement with the Southeastern Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company records, 1908-1996 56.0 Linear Feet

Manufacturer of tobacco products, founded in 1873 in St. Louis, Mo.; now headquartered in Morrisville, N.C. Collection includes financial records; clippings; scrapbooks; ledgers; print advertisements and posters; point of sale displays; scripts of radio and television commercials; audiovisual materials (film reels, videocassettes, DVDs); photographs, memorabilia and other materials that document primarily Liggett's marketing of tobacco products during the 20th century. Brands represented include: Chesterfield, Eve, Fatima, Home Run, L&M, Lark, Piedmont, and Spur. Advertisements for non-tobacco products, including alcoholic beverages and watch bands, are also present, and reflect a period of Liggett's product diversification. Advertising materials reflect the work of several agencies, including Cunningham & Walsh; Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample; J. Walter Thompson; McCann Erickson; and Newell-Emmett. Lincoln Hospital (Durham, N.C.) records, 1901-1998 and undated 19.9 Linear Feet

Durham, N.C. hospital established in 1901 Dr. Aaron Moore, Dr. Stanford Warren, and John Merrick to serve African Americans in the area. The Lincoln Hospital Records span the years 1901-1998, and primarily comprise the institution's administrative and medical files. The administrative records document the hospital's administrative history from the 1930s to the 1980s (bulk 1950-1976), primarily in files maintained by the hospital superintendents, especially Larry T. Suitt (1963-1977). There is also some information on the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing. The medical records (1925-1983 and undated) include obstetrical, surgical, discharge, and death records. Some of these are currently closed to research. The collection as a whole documents the bi-racial cooperation that was involved in establishing, running, and maintaining the institution, and outlines the collaboration between Lincoln Hospital, Watts Hospital, and the Duke University School of Medicine in providing patient care as well as education for African American medical professionals. The medical records also demonstrate the emphasis superintendents placed on general record-keeping, statistics, and the documentation of a patient's medical history. Included is a Duke Endowment series that documents the funds the Endowment distributed annually to assist the hospital in meeting costs incurred by charity cases, equipment, and renovations. There are only a few items dated after the merger in 1976 and only one file regarding the institution's School of Nursing.

Photographers of Asheville, NC. Photographs (chiefly cabinet cards produced by Lindsey and Brown) of street scenes, landscapes, and tourist attractions in late 19th-century western N.C. Descriptive text is printed on the reverse side of many of the photographs. Most photographs were taken in the vicinity of the Swannanoa, Hot Springs, the French Broad River, Round Knob, Hickory Nut Gap, Buck Forest, Highlands, and Asheville. Contains photographs of the Battery Park Hotel, Chimney Rock, Hooker's Mill, McElroy Tunnel, Devil's Pulpit, Paint Rock, the Seven Sisters, the Swannanoa tunnel stockade, the Murphy Division, Devil's Slip Gap, the Western North Carolina Railroad and U.S. Mail boys. Includes several images of African Americans in western N.C. Collection also includes 4 photographs produced by Brown alone and 3 stereoscopic views produced by Nat W. Taylor.

Jere Link papers, 1914-2016 and undated, bulk 1975-2006 7.5 Linear Feet .03 Gigabytes

The Jere Link papers comprise his private diaries and journals, creative and scholarly writings, lecture notes and teaching materials, along with incoming correspondence. Diaries and journals contain Link's personal thoughts and comments on his life, activities, creative and scholarly work, and relationships. Link was very open regarding his inner thoughts and concerns, and very frank about his sexual activities and his life as a gay man. His writings include general notebooks with drafts of creative work, screenplays, book proposals and drafts, Link's dissertation, along with articles, poetry, and short stories. There are teaching materials primarily featuring Link's handwritten lecture notes for his classes, along with additional related maps, handouts, photographs, exams and other materials. In addition, there are incoming personal letters and cards, along with some professional letters regarding Link's institutional appointments, writing, and Fulbright travel grant.

Advertising executive who worked for a number of New York agencies, including Benton & Bowles and McCann Erickson. Collection includes clippings, proof pages, storyboards, writings, speeches and other printed materials that primarily document Lipton's career at McCann Erickson during the 1970s and 1980s. Advertisements relate to a variety of personal consumer products including lotions and other cosmetics, baby care, contraception and family planning. Companies represented include Gillette, Johnson & Johnson, Mennen (now part of Colgate-Palmolive), Ortho, Pepperell, and Tampax. Acquired as part of the John W. This collection contains research and audiovisual materials related to the preperation for Lischer's book The Preacher King: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Word that Moved America . Included are recordings and transcripts of interviews and sermons, research materials such as photocopies of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s writings, scholarly journal articles, photographic materials and correspondence related to interviews. Baron Joseph Lister papers, 1900-1902 and undated. 3 items

2 ALS and a fragment of an ALS. Lister writes to James Burn Russell, inquiring about the use and success of anti-plague sera against the plague in Glasgow, and to Herbert Edward Durham, on the question whether the mosquito is the carrier of the yellow fever agent, suggesting various experimental ways to discover the bacilli and establish their development within the organism of the mosquito.

Peter Washington Little manuscript medical lecture notes and observations on medical cases, 1805-1843 0.8 Linear Feet (7 items)

Dr. Peter Washington Little (1784-1848) was a white physician who studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and practiced medicine in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Little's son Robert Parker Little (1818-1856) also became a physician and practiced in Columbus, Ohio. This collection consists of Peter Little's notes (1805-1806) on lectures given by Dr. Benjamin Rush and Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as his brief observations (1809) on medical cases and poisons. It also includes a physician's diary maintained by Robert Parker Little between 1842-1843.

Daniel A. Livingstone is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Biology at Duke University, with longstanding research interests in biology, limnology, paleolimnology, zoology, and other subjects. Houston Riot of 1917 trial photograph, 1917 1.2 Linear Feet (1 item)

W. C. Lloyd was a photographer. Collection comprises a gelatin silver photograph taken during the trail at Fort Sam Houston following the Houston Riot of 1917 or Camp Logan riot. It shows 64 African-American members of the Army's 24th Infantry being court martialed for mutiny and the murder of 17 people during the riot. The photographer included description written onto the negative. The back is stamped with the Lloyd Photo Co. address.

Locus Science Fiction Foundation archives, 1942-2012 and undated 10 Linear Feet

Locus, the Magazine of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Field, was co-founded by Charles N. Brown (1937-2009), Ed Meskys (1936-), and Dave Vanderwerf (1944-) in New York in 1968. It first began as a science-fiction and fantasy one-sheet news fanzine that was created to help the Boston Science Fiction Group win its 1971 Worldcon bid. Vanderwerf left after issue #4, and Meskys after #11. Charles Brown remained as editor until his death in 2009. The Locus Archives include names files for more than 800 people, many of whom are writers, editors, or publishers. The files contain correspondence, clippings, obituaries, and writings, the bulk of which relate to American writers, though there are several files kept on writers and fans from across the world, including China, Japan, and Russia. Much of the correspondence is about publishing news, corrections, and deaths in the science-fiction, fantasy, and horror community. There are several well-known correspondents including: Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Jim Baen, Ian and Betty Ballantine, Algis Budrys, Octavia E. Butler, Arthur C. Clarke, L. Sprague de Camp, Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein, Ursula K. Le Guin, Dean Koontz, Andre Alice Norton, James Tiptree, Jr. (Alice Sheldon), and Gene Wolfe.

Just Christian von Loder papers, 1806-1813 2 items

ALS. Loder writes of his situation and that of friends and family during the Napoleonic Wars, from Narva in 1806 and from Moscow in 1813. In the first letter, he bemoans the defeat of the German states; mentions the student unrest at the University of Halle and the subsequent closing of the university as yet another setback for the German nation; and sees Russia as the only "nation" which can now hope to defeat Napoleon. Loder, educated in Germany, was born in Riga, Estonia, and thus could be considered a Russian. In the second letter, he expresses fierce Russian nationalist sentiments, for which uncharacteristic effusions he explains that he cannot give reasons in writing. Probably he meant to appease the Russian censors. In this letter he details his efforts to organize and oversee the operation of the field hospital in Kassimoff and describes Moscow before and after the siege.

George Augustus Lofton papers, 1784-1941 14.2 Linear Feet 1800 Items

The George Augustus Lofton Papers span the years 1874-1941, although the bulk of the material dates from 1875-1900. They consist of correspondence, writings and sermons, clippings, book reviews, and printed materials. The collection principally relates to Lofton's career as a Baptist minister serving churches in Dalton, Gal; Memphis, Tenn. (First Church); St. Louis, Mo. (Third Church); Talladega, Ala.; and Nashville, Tenn. (Central Church). The collection mostly contains handwritten sermons and sermon notes, and includes little family or personal material, although a few family letters are in the Correspondence Series. The Correspondence Series, however, primarily contains letters critiquing Lofton's works, Review of the Question and Bible Thoughts and Themes. The Writings and Speeches Series documents Lofton's intellectual growth throughout his career as author and minister. This series also contains Lofton's published text, Character Sketches (1890), and a manuscript draft of his autobiography titled, "My Family Garden." Lofton's sermons and sermon notes track both his spiritual development and writing skills throughout the years of his ministry. The sermon notes reveal his views on slavery, capital punishment, and foreign mission work. The Printed Materials Series includes published brochures and sermons written by Lofton and others, 1881-1914. The Miscellaneous Series contains an assortment of items from 1873-1940 including Lofton family photographs and other materials. Included are items pertaining to Baptist minister George Law Stewart and Dr. Adiel Sherwood.

Logan Family papers, 1952-1994 2.7 Linear Feet 2025 Items

The Logan family were Southern Baptist missionaries to Nigeria from 1952 to 1982. Wayne Logan was a dentist practicing in Enugu and Ibadan. In the late 1970s, the family moved to Lagos, where Dr. Logan taught orthodontics at the University of Lagos Dental School. The Logan Family Papers includes many slides documenting the Logan family's life in Nigeria, including missionaries, missionary children, churches, and local Nigerian culture. Also includes books from their library collection.

Phillip Loken is a fine art ethnographic and documentary photographer based in North Carolina whose work focuses on the Black American South. The collection contains 24 black and white inkjet prints, one color inkjet print, and associated materials for The Calling: Hoodoo's Communion With The Ancestors taking place in Durham, North Carolina's Eno River State Park and documents Hoodoo and Black community. Carl L. Lokke papers, 1913-1968 16.1 Linear Feet Approximately 4000 Items

Archivist and historian; chief of Foreign Affairs Branch at the U.S. National Archives. Collection consists of the biographical and professional files of Carl Ludwig Lokke, who was on the staff of the National Archives for many years. Material includes copies of his own research papers and many folders of research notes on his specialty, 18th century French colonialism in the West Indies colonies, and more specifically on the life and career of colonial administrator Baron Pierre-Victor Malouet, who was active mainly in French Guiana. There are also many transcriptions and photocopies of primary documents from archives in France and other repositories, as well as some microfilms. Other material includes Lokke's work files from the National Archives.

Fritz London papers, 1845-2019, bulk 1926-1954 22.5 Linear Feet

Fritz London, physicist and theoretical chemist, formulated the London equations of superconductivity with his brother, Heinz London. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933, London held appointments at Oxford and Paris, then at Duke University from 1939 to 1954. He specialized in low temperature physics and quantum chemistry, and authored Superfluids (1950) and numerous articles. The Fritz London Papers include correspondence, notes, manuscripts, reprints, and other materials, with bulk dates 1926-1954. The more than 300 correspondents include Walter Heitler, F.A. Lindemann, Max von Laue, Wolfgang Pauli, Michael Polyani, Erwin Schrödinger, Enrico Fermi, Edward Teller, and other noted scientists. Other materials include galleys and drafts of Superfluids, lab notebooks, course materials, notes, bound reprints. Materials acquired after London's death include interviews with Edith London; memorials; copies of correspondence held in other repositories; selected publications and interview transcripts; and indexes to London's scientific correspondence. Methodist clergyman, missionary, and educator, of Ardmore, Oklahoma Chiefly personal and family correspondence concerning the work of Long and his wife, Lucy Maie (York) Long, as Methodist missionaries in Brazil (1911-1952), where he was also an official and teacher at Granbery Institute, Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Correspondents include Bishop César Dacorso Filho, John Monroe Moore, and Hugh Clarence Tucker in Brazil, and evangelist Davidson Victor York in the U.S. Other materials include writings, sermon notes, photographs, manuscript volumes, and printed materials, almost all relating to Long's activities in Brazil. Additions in the 1980s were processed separately from the main collection, and some unprocessed materials remain..

Mary Alves Long papers, 1944-1953 (bulk 1950) 0.2 Linear Feet approximately 100 Items

Mary Alves Long was born in Randolph County, North Carolina in 1864. She graduated from Peace Institute [College] in Raleigh, NC and eventually earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her autobiography High Time to Tell It was published by the Duke University Press in 1950. The bulk of the material is from 1950, after Mary Alves Long's book was published. Correspondence makes up the majority of the papers. There is one postcard dated 1944 and a letter dated 1953. The rest is dated 1950. Also included in the collection is a book jacket from her book High Time to Tell Itas well as clippings and a few photographs.

Percy Lyham Loraine papers, 1904-1960 0.2 Linear Feet

Sir Percy Lyham Loraine (1880-1961), was the 12th Baronet of Kirk Harle, Northumberland, and a British diplomat. After joining the Diplomatic Service in 1904, Loraine was stationed in Istanbul, Turkey, for three years before transfer to Iran, Greece, Egypt, and other locations. The collection includes correspondence concerning diplomatic matters in Turkey and the surrounding area (1906-1909, 1929, 1935?, 1938) and a detailed narrative journal by Loraine relating to Egyptian activity on the Turkish border near Akaba (Aqabah), 1905-1906.

Collection comprises a letter Alfred H. Love wrote to a Mr. Hacker (26 Jan. 1875) regarding his intention to take Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia for a peace meeting on 4 July 1876. Enclosures include Love's business card as a commission merchant and manufacturer's agent for woolens and yarns, along with an undated clipping regarding Love's being burned in effigy during a protest against the Universal Peace Union.

Ada Lovelace Letter, August 5, [1841 or 1847] 1 items

Ada Lovelace was a mathematician in 19th century England and the only legitimate child of the poet George Gordon, Lord Byron. She is often recognized as the creator of the first set of instructions meant to be carried out by a machine, and is thus seen as a pioneer of what would later become computer programming. The Ada Lovelace letter is a one-page note to [Fortunato] Prandi, an Italian interpreter, regarding ten guineas Lovelace owed Prandi.

Edwin and Anita Low were Southern Baptist missionaries (Edwin was a physician, Anita was a teacher) in Ogbomosho and Kontagora, Nigeria between 1950 and 1961. This collection contains family correspondence, photographs, writings, and a co-written memoir compiled of diary entries and letters about the Lows' lives and work in Nigeria.

Benjamin Lowy photographs of Iraq, 2003-2008 3 Linear Feet (2 boxes)

The collection consists of thirty-two 9x13 inch untitled digital color inkjet photographs taken by Benjamin Lowy, documenting the U.S. military presence in Iraq from 2003 to 2008. The prints are arranged in two series: Windows and Nightvision. Images in the Windows series were taken from the bulletproof windows of the armored Humvees in which Lowy spent most of his time while on missions in Iraq; they depict street scenes with Iraqi civilians, tanks, soldiers, checkpoints, military impoundments, street life, urban Iraqi culture, and a war-ravaged Iraqi landscape. Taken through U.S. military-issue night vision goggles, photographs in the Nightvision series reveal greenish images of late-night raids, prisoners and soldiers, landscapes, families, women, and street scenes. The images in this collection were published in 2011 as a photobook titled Iraq | Perspectives. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Abraham Zacarías López Penha letters, 1894-1925 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet

Novelist and poet, editor of the modernist journal REVISTA AZUL. Born to a Jewish family in 1865 in Willemstad, Curacao, emigrated to Colombia in 1887, died in 1927 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Collection features letters to López Penha from a wide variety of Latin American and European literary and intellectual figures, many of them Jewish. Correspondents include Venezuelan journalist Nicanor Bolet Peraza; Peruvian novelists Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera and Clorinda Matto de Turner; Cuban authors Aurelia Castillo de Gonzáles and Enrique Hernandez Miyares; English novelist H. Rider Haggard; Mexican poet Amado Nervo; European Jewish activists Max Simon Nordau, Angel Pulido, and Israel Zangwill; Spanish authors Gaspar Núñez de Arce, Emilia Pardo Bazán, and Miguel de Unamuno; and many others. The majority of the letters are written in Spanish, a few are in English.
