The Southeast Women's Employment Coalition Records (SWEC) span the period 1868 to 1991 with the bulk dating from 1981 to 1990. The multiracial, regional organization was founded chiefly to expand employment opportunities for women in the rural South. Correspondence, financial records, reports, printed material, personnel files, photographs, audiovisual material, writings, meeting minutes, and conference papers comprise the majority of the collection. Well documented are the Southeast Women's Employment Coalition's efforts: to provide leadership training for women; to encourage women to apply for nontraditional jobs, for example through its Women's Opportunity in Road Construction (WORC) Project; to promote women's employment in the tourism industry; to evaluate economic, social and political trends affecting women in the South such as child care, comparable worth, and nontraditional jobs for women; and to establish ties with other organizations seeking to improve women's economic status. Administrative concerns relating to the Southeast Women's Employment Coalition, including personnel, financial, and organizational issues are also well described. Represented extensively are their efforts to raise money from private foundations and businesses. Organizations highlighted in the collection include Public Affairs Research and Communications, Inc. and the Women's Technical Assistance Project. In general, information concerning these topics and organizations is scattered throughout the collection.

Nancy Sours papers, 1962-1982 1.0 Linear Feet

Nancy Sours was a white civil rights and human rights activist who volunteered and worked in Mississippi, San Francisco, and Berkeley in the mid- and late-1960s. This collection contains correspondence, collected printed and published materials, and some personal materials documenting her volunteer work; her family's activities and travels; her involvement with various organizations such as Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS); her friendships and sexual relationships; her experiences and opinions about her community organizing and activism; her mental and physical health; and her education at San Francisco State College and University of California, Berkeley, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Topics discussed in the various printed materials include civil rights, Black power, socialism and economic reform, gay liberation, women's liberation, reproductive rights, and Vietnam War protests. Retired advertising executive. Collection documents Sosna's long career as an advertising executive and consultant, and contains materials from a wide variety of formats, including correspondence, writings, printed material, advertisement proofs and clippings, sketches, scrapbooks, slides, negatives, and film. The collection primarily provides a record of advertising campaigns Sosna developed as a copy supervisor, creative director, and advertising executive at Gershuny Associates, Leo Burnett, Grant Advertising, Doherty Clifford Steers & Shenfield, Sullivan Stauffer Colwell & Bayles, Norman Craig & Kummel, and J.M. Mathes, from 1948 to 1973; the collection has limited material relating to the specific agencies for which he worked. In addition, the collection documents Sosna's later writings, lectures, and seminars as an independent consultant in retail and supermarket advertising from the 1970s through 2001, including a complete run of the Supermarket Advertising Newsletter (1981-2000) and a copy of his book Dodge #9: How to Never Make a Mistake: Achieving Success in a World That Is Always Looking for Someone to Blame (2001). Major advertising campaigns represented in the collection include: American Tobacco Company (Bull Durham and Silva Thins cigarettes); Bristol-Myers Company; Bulova Corporation; Dr Pepper Co.; Food Fair/Pantry Pride; Hoover Company; Ladies' Home Journal; Martex; Pabst Brewing Company; Procter & Gamble; Pure Oil Company; and Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. The collection also documents Sosna's role as supervisor of the Peace Corps advertising campaign in its first two years, from 1961 to 1963. Peace Corps materials include print advertisements; "Volunteer Radio Kits" distributed to broadcasters; one promotional film originally aired on American television; and a letter from Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr., first director of the Peace Corps.

The Irving Sonn Papers span the years 1963-1977 and contain general correspondence, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and presentation slides that primarily document the periods of Sonn's employment at Ted Bates & Co. and Needham, Harper & Steers. Also includes recordings of advertising spots and jingles in a variety of formats, including audiotape and cassettes; VHS and Umatic videocassettes; and 16mm film. Nancy Watkins Sommers (1930-2018) attended Duke University's Woman's College and graduated with a Bachelor's in Music in 1952. Her scrapbook documents her first year at Duke University (1948-1949) and includes personal notes, invitations, newspaper clippings, and programs, particularly documenting her participation in the Duke Madrigals and her attendance and engagement with music, social gatherings, dances, and performance programs at Duke. Herman Snow papers, 1844-1892 0.1 Linear Feet (41 items)

Herman Snow was a Unitarian minister and spiritualist, as well as a religious book and newspaper agent. Collection comprises 41 items, including 36 letters written to Snow and five manuscripts. Many of the items were annotated by Herman Snow in purple pencil. There are two letters concerning the First Ecclesiastical Society of Brooklyn, Connecticut, and Snow's two-page handwritten memorial of his service there, 1845-1846; two 1866 letters on a white school in North Carolina and the "Freedmen's & Union Society, and the establishment of white and freedman schools in Wilmington, N.C.;" letters from spiritualists Seldes J. Finney, William Denton, A. E. Newton, and H. H. Brown; a 1888 letter from Mary Gunning regarding spiritualism and science; an 1892 letter containing a prospectus for the New World, a religious serial; as well as an 1892 letter from Richard Hodgson of the American Branch of the Society for Psychical Research. Manuscripts include an 1850 resolution for Snow's separation from the Rockford Unitarian congregation, the 1863 certificate issued to Snow by the Harvard University Theological School, and a letter of introduction authorizing Snow as a business agent for the CHRISTIAN EXAMINER.
