Anne and Frank Warner were folklorists and folk song musicians. The Anne and Frank Warner Collection, with materials from as early as 1899 to as late as 2000, documents the Warners' active life of collecting, recording, and producing music and publications associated with traditional American folk song culture, primarily from along the eastern seaboard areas, in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina, and as far as New Hampshire to the north.

Robert Ward was a composer primarily of operas, instrumental works, and symphonic choral works. He won the 1962 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his opera, The Crucible, which remains his best-known work. Ward served as Chancellor of the North Carolina School of the Arts and as a faculty member at Columbia and Duke Universities. His papers span from his time as a student at the Eastman School of Music in the 1930s to his final years composing in 2012. They include scores, music sketches, recordings, libretto drafts, correspondence, scrapbooks, research and information files, writings and speeches by and about Ward, as well as concert programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, awards, and other materials that document his professional life and work as a composer.

Ward served with the U.S. Christian Commission in hospitals in Louisville, Ky., and Nashville, Tenn., from 1864 to 1865, where she worked in the kitchens and as a general aide to the soldiers who spent brief periods there. Mainly letters between Libbie Ward and her family and friends.

Calvin Ward was a Zoology professor at Duke University. The collection contains correspondence and memoranda relating to faculty groups, the Biology, Forestry and Genetics programs and University-wide issues.

Correspondence, diaries, writings, interviews, drafts of studies and reports, scrapbooks, printed material, photographs, and other papers, relating to Warburton's leadership in the Alliance for Guidance of Rural Youth (AGRY), 1947-1963; and to Affiliated Schools for Workers, Atlanta University, Brookwood Labor College, Columbia University (M.A., 1927), Institute of Social and Religious Research, Mount Holyoke College, Summer School for Women Workers in Industry, Spelman College, U.S. Children's Bureau, U.S. Federal Emergency Relief Administration, and the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture. Topics include the rural youth guidance movement, training programs for unemployed teachers in the 1930s, women workers in the 1920s, African Americans in the early 1930s, industrial home work in the Northeast in the late 1930s, migrant farm workers in the Southwest and Florida in the 1940s to 1950s, socioeconomic conditions in coal mining villages in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois in the late 1920s, and in Harlan County, Ky., and Green Sea, S.C., in the late 1940s, and the effects of the National Defense Education Act on guidance in rural high schools.

William Hane Wannamaker (1873-1958) was a professor and administrator at Trinity College and Duke University for over four decades. He served as Dean of Trinity College and Vice President for the Educational Division, and was responsible for critical decisions regarding student, faculty, and administrative policies. The William H. Wannamaker Papers are the official files of the Dean and Vice President of Trinity College and Duke University. Materials include correspondence, reports, evaluations, and other administrative materials. Major subjects include student discipline, faculty issues, World Wars I and II, college sports, the hiring and promotion of faculty, and other administrative matters. English.

The "Asians in America" house course was the first course pertaining to the Asian diaspora and Asian American studies to be taught at Duke University. Undergraduate student, Caroline Wang, organized and instructed the class in the Fall and Spring of 1982. The collection contains syllabi, course proposals, readings, and materials related to Wang's senior thesis about Japanese American internment during World War II.

The papers of the Walton family comprise journals and diaries; correspondence; writings; photographic materials; clippings; and printed material. Early items pertain to the Baker family of Hingham, Massachusetts, and letters document the Walton's courtship and early marriage. Papers from the 1920s to 1948 relate to Eleanore Walton's work with societies and clubs, and as a motion picture censor in Kansas City, Missouri. The larger Loring B. Walton Series documents Walton's student days, his service as a U.S. Army officer in the American Expeditionary Force in France and Germany, 1918-1919, and his lengthy correspondence with his mother, Eleanore, and with A. Goderic A. Hodges, a British Army officer. In addition there are a few letters from authors such as Wilmon Brewer, Count Sforza, Maurice Holleaux, and Anatole France, and a poem by Edmund Wilson. Walton's involvement with Duke University as a Romance Languages faculty member is also documented to a lesser degree. Photographs and negatives are of family member portraits, Princeton and Harvard campuses, 1920, Fort Douglas, Utah, also 1920, Hingham, Massachusetts, and unidentified subjects.

Officer, 4th Regiment of British Osmanli Cavalry in Syria. Chiefly to Colonel Walpole from British diplomats and military officials concerning the conduct and training of the British Osmanli Cavalry, an irregular regiment of Moslem horsemen from the Turkish provinces known as Bashi-Bazouks. Walpole was on a special mission to Syria and the regiment was being recruited to serve in the Crimean War. Some letters also refer to the interaction between Turkish and British officers. Other letters concern Colonel W. F. S. Beatson, who had been placed in charge of recruiting the contingent of Bashi-Bazouks and was then relieved of his duties. List of letters at the end.

After placing her ill husband, Samueal Wall, in a sanitarium, Alma Stikeleather Wall traveled to New York, where she became known as a master of dialects, a singer of spirituals, and a storyteller. She was a great niece of Chief Justice John Marshall. The collection includes some of her writings, photographs of slaves, and photographs documenting the results of the 1926 Miami hurricane. Some correspondence concerns the mental illness of one of Wall's daughters. There are also certificates, a William Jennings Bryan speech, a scrapbook, and diaries belonging to Wall and her daughter.

ALS. Walker writes to a Daniel P. Farrington, regarding her actions to secure voting rights for women, and to a Ralph Greenbaum, expressing her desire to build a hospital, home and school for tuberculosis patients.

Druggist and court clerk, of Scottsville and Glasgow, Ky. Correspondence and business papers dealing primarily with the drug business and containing information on the practice of medicine in ante-bellum Tennessee and Kentucky. Includes papers relating to Walker's later activities as clerk of the Circuit Court of Allen County, Ky., and personal letters of various members of the Walker family of Kentucky.

Ken Wainio (1952-2006) was an American surrealist author and poet based in San Francisco, California. Collection includes manuscripts and drafts of many of Wainio's poems and writings, including his novel, Starfuck. Also includes his journals and diaries, published poetry and printed materials, some correspondence, snapshots, and other biographical information.

Wagner Sign Service was a signage and sign lettering firm based in Chicago, Ill. established in 1920 by Irwin Wagner. Album consists of black-and-white photographs of sign lettering created by Wagner Sign Service. Photographs are of actual signs promoting public service and workplace safety messages, as well as commercial signs advertising businesses and event venues including automobile dealers, banks, churches, movie theaters, real estate agencies, and restaurants. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History and the Kevin P. Reilly Sr. Outdoor Advertising Archives.

Artist, writer, and arts educator. Collection contains personal correspondence, photographs, writings and drawings, subject files, ephemera, and clippings. The photographs document Wade's personal life, her art exhibits, and trips to Cuba, Alaska, and Costa Rica. The drawings and writings primarily consist of published versions and drafts of cartoons, as well as some manuscripts of writings and drawings for texts, including the artwork for Have You Ever Seen an Ugly Bride?, an unpublished book by Wade and Elizabeth Lide. The subject files include a file for the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South, an abortion rights petition signed by Norma McCorvey, and typescripts documenting the Kilbuck family, who were ancestors of Wade's that were missionaries in Alaska. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Author, translator, and teacher Norman Waddell was born in Washington, D.C. in 1940, and he moved to Japan in 1965. He is an emeritus professor at Otani University in Kyoto, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Literature (LittD) and where he taught for more than thirty years. He has translated works by notable Zen figures such as Suzuki D.T. (Daisetz Teitarō), Dōgen Kigen, Bankei Yōtaku, and Hakuin Ekaku. Waddell's papers include correspondence from: Zen teacher Robert Aitken, who was a co-founder of the Diamond Sangha in Honolulu; artist Frederick Franck; and scholar and translator Burton Watson.

Clement Vollmer joined the German Languages and Literature Department at Duke University in 1926, where he remained until his retirement in 1956. In 1918, he published The American Novel in Germany. Professor Vollmer served as chair of the department during the 1950s, as president of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association, and was a member of numerous academic societies. Includes correspondence, recommendations, faculty meeting minutes, German Department memoranda, grade books and department enrollment statistics. Also includes date books, address books and diaries kept by Maude Hugo Vollmer (Mrs. Clement Vollmer). Inclusive years are 1898-1983.

Virginia Barber became a literary agent in 1971 and opened her own agency in 1974. The Virginia Barber Literary Agency was sold to the William Morris Agency in 2001. Among the authors she represented have been Rosellen Brown, Andrew Delbanco, James Dodson, Sue Monk Kidd, Peter Mayle, Alice Munro, David Nasaw, Anita Shreve, and Anne Rivers Siddons. She has served on the Board and as President of Women's Media Group and on the Boards of Literacy Partners, Duke University Libraries, and Poets and Writers. The collection includes client files and correspondence for the VBLA's many clients during the late 1970s through the early 2000s. There are also legal and financial materials, correspondence files with other agencies and publishers, including Virago Books, and materials from Barber's work with professional organizations such as the Independent Literary Agents Association. Notable clients represented in this collection include Peter Mayle, Anita Shreve, MacDonald Harris, and Paul Ehrlich.

Video Monitoring Services of America (VMS) was a television broadcast content tracking and analysis firm, based in New York, N.Y., active from the 1970s until it closed in 2011. Collection includes log books of television advertising, news broadcasts, and other media content recorded and analyzed for viewership and other parameters by VMS. The collection also includes some logs from Radio TV Reports, a competitor firm and limited partner of VMS. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

George Vickers (1943-2018) was a policy advocate, sociologist and social activist. Collection contains materials related to Vickers' antiwar and civil rights activism, research on the New Left, engagement with struggles for social justice and democracy across Central America, and work for the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) and the Open Society Foundations (OSF). Includes research files on US social movements and on armed conflicts and democratic transitions primarily in El Salvador and Nicaragua (1980s-2000s); periodicals, election materials, photographs, and notebooks, primarily documenting Vickers' work in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua as a human rights and election observer (1980s-1990s); FBI files on Vickers and on activist organizations; writings by Vickers and others; and WOLA and OSF administrative files and correspondence. Also includes over 150 recorded interviews conducted by Vickers with Central American politicians, guerillas, social activists, and others. Organizations represented in the materials include Students for a Democratic Society, the Student Peace Union, Hemisphere Initiatives, Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional, the US Southern Command, and the Grupo Conjunto para la Investigación de Grupos Armados Ilegales con Motivación Política en El Salvador.

Henry George Austin Vicars was a British Army officer stationed in India in the 1850s and 1860s. He entered the army in October 1851, and was Adjutant of the 61st Regiment during the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857 and 1858. In his diaries, dated 1853-1855, 1857-1860, and 1864-1865, he reports on the mutinies, the Delhi siege and massacres, executing mutineers, cholera epidemics and fevers, and daily life as a soldier. Entries discuss his daily routine, the weather, his amusements and engagements, his clothing, his friends and fellow officers, his travels with the army, news and rumors he has heard, sermons and other church services he attended, and his home leave in London.

Veteran Feminists of America (VFA) is a nonprofit organization for veterans of the Second Wave of the feminist movement. It was founded by Jacqueline Ceballos and held its first feminist reunion in 1993. The organization sponsors reunions, programs, and publications honoring feminists throughout the United States. The collection includes administrative files, board minutes, program and reunion materials, obituaries, correspondence, financial information, newsletters, and photographs. Acquired by the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Collection comprises a photograph album with 38 albumen photographs (6 x 4.25 inches) pasted on sheets of thick cardboard. The album's binding features decorated wood with a Jerusalem cross. The back of the binding is marked "Jerusalem" in English and Hebrew. Photographs are numbered and feature subtitles in English and French. Photographic subjects in Jerusalem include: exterior and interior of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and several stations of the cross, the Wailing Wall, Via Dolorosa, various gates of Jerusalem, Mosque of Omar, Tomb of the Kings, Garden of Gethsemane, and Mount of Olives. Among the images of Palestine are: Jaffa, Tomb of Rachel, Bethlehem, Hebron, Tomb of Lazarus, Jericho, Dead Sea, the River Jordan, and the Tower of David and Hippicus. There is also a photograph of two women at a mill. All but two of the photographs are signed with the American Colony mark.

Aleksandar Sedmak Vesić was a prominent civil engineer and Duke engineering professor. He is especially known for his work on soil properties and interaction with construction materials, as well as the use of explosives in excavation projects.

Camilo J. Vergara is a documentary photographer, focusing on the evolution of urban spaces. Collection of color prints from Vergara's 2009 National Building Museum exhibit Storefront Churches, with photographs of urban churches, pasters, and murals from cities around the United States. This exhibit was part of a larger collection featured in Vergara's book, How the Other Half Worships.

Collection comprises 63 exhibit-quality black-and-white photographic portraits of Durham, North Carolina citizens of all races, ages, genders, and sexual orientations, taken from 1989 to 1992 for a Center for Documentary Studies project. Subjects include activists, writers, older people, working class men, friends, couples, and families. Many of the individuals were alumni of Duke University. Also includes several prints and a brochure from an exhibit entitled "Home Ground," featuring Vaughan's family and landscapes from two family farms, 1977-1987. Formats include gelatin silver, Polaroids (some in color), and four palladium/plantinotype prints, along with a hand-pigmented, textured print. The photographs range in size from about 8 3/8 x 10 3/4 inches to 11x14 inches and are all matted, captioned, and signed. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

George Van Metre was a civil engineer, real estate dealer, local politician and local recorder of weather conditions at Martinsburg, West Virginia. The collection includes surveying notes, drawings, personal and business correspondence and papers of Van Metre as well as William Ferrel and members of his family. Also included are weather observations, account books and letters from a missionary in India.

The bulk of this collection consists of receipts for dry goods, and farming equipment, including a S.C. bill for taxes on horses and slaves. There are also a few family letters, and two wills signed by Jacob Van Lear in 1820 and 1821.

Collection comprises a four-page letter Van Cott wrote (19 May 1884) to an unidentified close friend regarding her preaching in Dover, Maine, and its impact. She confesses "...I find the people spiritually dead" and tells the story of a father who dragged his son away from her and the altar. The letter is signed, "Peggie." She inserted into the letter a newspaper clipping reporting the revival she led in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Material appears to consist largely of ALS to and from Vallisnieri.

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide census every 10 years. Census 2000 sought to count and classify a record number of the American population, emphasizing the changing demographics of the country. This collection was donated to the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, & Marketing History by Sybil F. Stershic, a member of the Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations for Census 2000. The collection includes a Census 2000 advertising binder, several informational and promotional posters, a partnership informational kit, and two special reports.
