He Maigui (b.1928) is a resident of Daguo Village, Daguo Xiang, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. During the famine of 1942, He's sister was forced to marry to someone far away from home, so that her family could get a basket of food in return. In 1958, all the cookware was confiscated and families were not allowed to cook at home. People ate at the eating hall, where noodle soups did not have noodles. Many people starved to death. He Zishen (b.1953) is a resident of Hezhuang Village, Daguo Xiang, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. He recalls that villagers were not allowed to cook at home. Those who did were critized at struggle sessions. Village canteen only supplied thin soup with a few small chucks of yam. Adults tried save the yam for their childre. People ate all sorts of tree leaves, even tree bark. He said that the famine was caused because village cadres had to greatly exaggerate the production. Wang Guizhi (b. 1954) is a resident of Hezhuang Village, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. She said that she was little when the famine happened. Children in the village were so starved that they just sat there all day. Her grandfather died of starvation. People were not allowed to cook at home. Those who can walk long distance all went to Shaanxi Province to beg for food.

Jia Guanglai (b. 1948) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. In 1958, people started to eat in communal canteens and Jia saw older people building a mess pot. Mostly, canteens served wild vegetables and vegetable soups. Because their canteen was managed well, fewer people died in the team. Jia's mother dug lettuce from the field and rubbed them with salt. Longwaer's mother managed to get some sweet potatoes. She dared not to have them in the daytime and shared them at night. Corns were not grown well because of the drought, but people chewed them anyway. They also ate elm tree bark and wheat bran.

Jia Baozhou (b. 1942) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. During the Famine, Jia's village was doing better than other ones—they had some vegetables and a few people died of hunger. Usually old people died because they had no offspring to dig up vegetables for them. During the Great Leap Forward, 4 or 5 people would pretentiously carry something with only one scoop of shit on it. Jia was a principal and in order to cater to his superior, he made up a lot of bragging slogans. When eating at communal canteens, one family only got one ladle of rice. Zhang Guizhi (b.1931) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. In the times of blast furnaces, every household was searched thoroughly and anything that got attention would be displayed at the door and confiscated. Wrong-doers would be denounced and beaten up. Frequently, people had to leave their children at home to go to mass meetings. Old people had to work too. If they did not reap corns or look after children, they had nothing to eat. People were working day and night, following the production team's whistling. Jia Yuzhen (b.1940) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. Jia recollects that people were so hungry that they caught rats for food. They sneakily picked up hyacinth beans that had been thrown away. A daughter of some family died and people didn't know how to deal with the body, so they put it in an empty sweet potato vault. An old person was too hungry to walk and died while eating a sweet potato he picked up in the field. When eating in communal canteens, old people secretly cooked at night. Du Shengfa (b. 1937) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. He is also the grandfather of the interviewer Du Guan. Nobody died in Du's village during the Famine. When eating at communal canteens, one family only got one ladle of rice. Adults drank some thin porridge and children got something thicker. People were too hungry to even walk, so they sat on something pulled by cows when working in the field. Fortunately, their village had a vegetable garden. Other villages could only feed on wild plants. Du was a canteen accountant at Sanwuzhang and had some food at hand. Du's cousin brought a woman to him for food and Du gave her a pan of sweet potatoes. The woman, who fled here out of hunger, refused to leave after this. She later became Du's cousin's wife. Jia Youding (b.1942) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. Jia stopped school in 1958 because there wasn't enough food anymore. Before that, he carried sweet potatoes and firewood to school every week and cooked for himself. Only a few people died of hunger in Jia's production team. They had some people in charge of growing vegetables and their several acres of black vegetables filled the other villages with envy. In 1960, Jia was an accountant in the credit union of the production team. One day, after a meeting, on his way back, he saw a person died of hunger, which gave him creeps. Wang Qin (b.1920) is a resident of Poyang Village, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province.During the Land Reform Movement, Wang's family was classified as rich peasant. She suffered through eating at eating halls and Cultural Revolution, but could not remember their details due to her age. Her son remembers that, in 1958, he was only two or three years old, and he was so hungry that he could not walk. He picked up cow dungs on the road and searched for wheat in them. Wang's son also says that many local people went to work on the reservoir and many were starved to death there.
