Lincoln Hospital (Durham, N.C.) records, 1901-1998 and undated 19.9 Linear Feet

Durham, N.C. hospital established in 1901 Dr. Aaron Moore, Dr. Stanford Warren, and John Merrick to serve African Americans in the area. The Lincoln Hospital Records span the years 1901-1998, and primarily comprise the institution's administrative and medical files. The administrative records document the hospital's administrative history from the 1930s to the 1980s (bulk 1950-1976), primarily in files maintained by the hospital superintendents, especially Larry T. Suitt (1963-1977). There is also some information on the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing. The medical records (1925-1983 and undated) include obstetrical, surgical, discharge, and death records. Some of these are currently closed to research. The collection as a whole documents the bi-racial cooperation that was involved in establishing, running, and maintaining the institution, and outlines the collaboration between Lincoln Hospital, Watts Hospital, and the Duke University School of Medicine in providing patient care as well as education for African American medical professionals. The medical records also demonstrate the emphasis superintendents placed on general record-keeping, statistics, and the documentation of a patient's medical history. Included is a Duke Endowment series that documents the funds the Endowment distributed annually to assist the hospital in meeting costs incurred by charity cases, equipment, and renovations. There are only a few items dated after the merger in 1976 and only one file regarding the institution's School of Nursing.

Photographers of Asheville, NC. Photographs (chiefly cabinet cards produced by Lindsey and Brown) of street scenes, landscapes, and tourist attractions in late 19th-century western N.C. Descriptive text is printed on the reverse side of many of the photographs. Most photographs were taken in the vicinity of the Swannanoa, Hot Springs, the French Broad River, Round Knob, Hickory Nut Gap, Buck Forest, Highlands, and Asheville. Contains photographs of the Battery Park Hotel, Chimney Rock, Hooker's Mill, McElroy Tunnel, Devil's Pulpit, Paint Rock, the Seven Sisters, the Swannanoa tunnel stockade, the Murphy Division, Devil's Slip Gap, the Western North Carolina Railroad and U.S. Mail boys. Includes several images of African Americans in western N.C. Collection also includes 4 photographs produced by Brown alone and 3 stereoscopic views produced by Nat W. Taylor.

Jere Link papers, 1914-2016 and undated, bulk 1975-2006 7.5 Linear Feet .01 Gigabytes

The Jere Link papers comprise his private diaries and journals, creative and scholarly writings, lecture notes and teaching materials, along with incoming correspondence. Diaries and journals contain Link's personal thoughts and comments on his life, activities, creative and scholarly work, and relationships. Link was very open regarding his inner thoughts and concerns, and very frank about his sexual activities and his life as a gay man. His writings include general notebooks with drafts of creative work, screenplays, book proposals and drafts, Link's dissertation, along with articles, poetry, and short stories. There are teaching materials primarily featuring Link's handwritten lecture notes for his classes, along with additional related maps, handouts, photographs, exams and other materials. In addition, there are incoming personal letters and cards, along with some professional letters regarding Link's institutional appointments, writing, and Fulbright travel grant.

Joan Lipton papers, 1963-2001 and undated 0.2 Linear Feet

Advertising executive who worked for a number of New York agencies, including Benton & Bowles and McCann Erickson. Collection includes clippings, proof pages, storyboards, writings, speeches and other printed materials that primarily document Lipton's career at McCann Erickson during the 1970s and 1980s. Advertisements relate to a variety of personal consumer products including lotions and other cosmetics, baby care, contraception and family planning. Companies represented include Gillette, Johnson & Johnson, Mennen (now part of Colgate-Palmolive), Ortho, Pepperell, and Tampax. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Richard Lischer is a white ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the James T. and Alice Mead Cleland Professor Emeritus of Preaching at Duke Divinity School. This collection contains research and audiovisual materials related to the preperation for Lischer's book The Preacher King: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Word that Moved America . Included are recordings and transcripts of interviews and sermons, research materials such as photocopies of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s writings, scholarly journal articles, photographic materials and correspondence related to interviews. Baron Joseph Lister papers, 1900-1902 and undated. 3 items

2 ALS and a fragment of an ALS. Lister writes to James Burn Russell, inquiring about the use and success of anti-plague sera against the plague in Glasgow, and to Herbert Edward Durham, on the question whether the mosquito is the carrier of the yellow fever agent, suggesting various experimental ways to discover the bacilli and establish their development within the organism of the mosquito.

William P. Littell was an advertising executive at the Chicago office of Ruthrauff & Ryan (a subsidiary of the Interpublic Group) from 1922-1964. The William Littell papers include photographs, biographical information, correspondence, writings and other printed materials. The bulk of the collection consists of materials compiled for an advertising instructional course and proposed public relations campaigns for Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon. Daniel A. Livingstone is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Biology at Duke University, with longstanding research interests in biology, limnology, paleolimnology, zoology, and other subjects. The Daniel A. Livingstone papers include the extensive correspondence of Dr. Livingstone from the 1980s to 2001 as well as other materials related to his research and teaching at Duke University.

Houston Riot of 1917 trial photograph, 1917 1.2 linear ft. Linear Feet (1 item)

W. C. Lloyd was a photographer. Collection comprises a gelatin silver photograph taken during the trail at Fort Sam Houston following the Houston Riot of 1917 or Camp Logan riot. It shows 64 African-American members of the Army's 24th Infantry being court martialed for mutiny and the murder of 17 people during the riot. The photographer included description written onto the negative. The back is stamped with the Lloyd Photo Co. address.

Locus Science Fiction Foundation archives, 1942-2012 and undated 10 Linear Feet

Locus, the Magazine of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Field, was co-founded by Charles N. Brown (1937-2009), Ed Meskys (1936-), and Dave Vanderwerf (1944-) in New York in 1968. It first began as a science-fiction and fantasy one-sheet news fanzine that was created to help the Boston Science Fiction Group win its 1971 Worldcon bid. Vanderwerf left after issue #4, and Meskys after #11. Charles Brown remained as editor until his death in 2009. The Locus Archives include names files for more than 800 people, many of whom are writers, editors, or publishers. The files contain correspondence, clippings, obituaries, and writings, the bulk of which relate to American writers, though there are several files kept on writers and fans from across the world, including China, Japan, and Russia. Much of the correspondence is about publishing news, corrections, and deaths in the science-fiction, fantasy, and horror community. There are several well-known correspondents including: Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Jim Baen, Ian and Betty Ballantine, Algis Budrys, Octavia E. Butler, Arthur C. Clarke, L. Sprague de Camp, Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein, Ursula K. Le Guin, Dean Koontz, Andre Alice Norton, James Tiptree, Jr. (Alice Sheldon), and Gene Wolfe.

Just Christian von Loder papers, 1806-1813 2 items

ALS. Loder writes of his situation and that of friends and family during the Napoleonic Wars, from Narva in 1806 and from Moscow in 1813. In the first letter, he bemoans the defeat of the German states; mentions the student unrest at the University of Halle and the subsequent closing of the university as yet another setback for the German nation; and sees Russia as the only "nation" which can now hope to defeat Napoleon. Loder, educated in Germany, was born in Riga, Estonia, and thus could be considered a Russian. In the second letter, he expresses fierce Russian nationalist sentiments, for which uncharacteristic effusions he explains that he cannot give reasons in writing. Probably he meant to appease the Russian censors. In this letter he details his efforts to organize and oversee the operation of the field hospital in Kassimoff and describes Moscow before and after the siege.

George Augustus Lofton papers, 1784-1941 14.2 Linear Feet 1800 Items

The George Augustus Lofton Papers span the years 1874-1941, although the bulk of the material dates from 1875-1900. They consist of correspondence, writings and sermons, clippings, book reviews, and printed materials. The collection principally relates to Lofton's career as a Baptist minister serving churches in Dalton, Gal; Memphis, Tenn. (First Church); St. Louis, Mo. (Third Church); Talladega, Ala.; and Nashville, Tenn. (Central Church). The collection mostly contains handwritten sermons and sermon notes, and includes little family or personal material, although a few family letters are in the Correspondence Series. The Correspondence Series, however, primarily contains letters critiquing Lofton's works, Review of the Question and Bible Thoughts and Themes. The Writings and Speeches Series documents Lofton's intellectual growth throughout his career as author and minister. This series also contains Lofton's published text, Character Sketches (1890), and a manuscript draft of his autobiography titled, "My Family Garden." Lofton's sermons and sermon notes track both his spiritual development and writing skills throughout the years of his ministry. The sermon notes reveal his views on slavery, capital punishment, and foreign mission work. The Printed Materials Series includes published brochures and sermons written by Lofton and others, 1881-1914. The Miscellaneous Series contains an assortment of items from 1873-1940 including Lofton family photographs and other materials. Included are items pertaining to Baptist minister George Law Stewart and Dr. Adiel Sherwood.

Logan Family papers, 1952-1994 2.7 Linear Feet 2025 Items

The Logan family were Southern Baptist missionaries to Nigeria from 1952 to 1982. Wayne Logan was a dentist practicing in Enugu and Ibadan. In the late 1970s, the family moved to Lagos, where Dr. Logan taught orthodontics at the University of Lagos Dental School. The Logan Family Papers includes many slides documenting the Logan family's life in Nigeria, including missionaries, missionary children, churches, and local Nigerian culture. Also includes books from their library collection.

Lynnsy Logue papers, 1989-2007 0.5 Linear Feet

Lynnsy Logue is a sculptor and founder of the Wonderful Women organization. She worked with Rachel Watkins to create The Homecoming Queens project in the mid-1990s. The collection includes a scrapbook and a videotape from The Homecoming Queens public arts project, as well as some research materials about women around the world and some materials on a vigil for the Montreal 14 held in Charlotte in 1989. The Homecoming Queens was a traveling exhibit of life-size mannequins and papier-mache dolls that represented women suffering from various social and political issues around the world, including female genital mutilation, rape, abuse, war, aging, and sexism. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.
