Ingrid Bengis papers, 1930-2016 14 Linear Feet (10 boxes)

Ingris Bengis was a white writer, poet, and fishmonger. This collection documents Bengis's life and work in New York City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Deer Isle and Stonington, Maine. The collection includes drafts, poetry, and published works (including I Have Come Here to Be Alone and Metro Stop Dostoevsky). The bulk of this collection contains correspondence, including letters to and from Bengis, relating to her personal life; teaching; running Ingrid Bengis Seafood; and her 2003 court case regarding her Wooster Street Apartment in New York. Bengis's papers also include photographs of Bengis and her travels, clippings about Bengis as a writer and fishmonger, materials related to her teaching at St. Petersburg State University and Fulbright grant to Russia, as well as personal diaries, journals, and ledgers from her seafood business.

Ben Mallard papers, 1947-1960s 0.25 Linear Feet

Ben Mallard was a Black sales representative for Budweiser based in Los Angeles, C.A., who worked for Anheuser-Busch in the 1950s and 1960s. He was also an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Collection consists mostly of black-and-white photographs related to Mallard's career as a Budweiser sales representative in California, showing him with products and at events. Also present are photos and information about Mallard's wedding in 1947. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Bryant Bennett papers, 1767-1902, bulk 1840-1875, bulk bulk 2 Linear Feet

Bryant Bennett was a merchant and planter residing in Williamston, North Carolina (in Martin County). This collection contains correspondence and papers of Bryant Bennett and of his family. Included are mercantile accounts of the firms of Bennett and Hyman in Williamston, N.C. and of Bennett and Price in Hamilton (both places in Martin County), school letters from a normal school in Oxford, North Carolina, deeds, promissory notes, receipts for land sold for taxes, plantation account books containing household and farm accounts, lists of slaves and supplies issued to them, business records dealing with the marketing of cotton at Norfolk, Virginia, agricultural treatises by one S. W. Outterbridge of Martin County, and letters to Bennett after he had moved to Plymouth, North Carolina, in 1869.

Collection comprises a letter (dated 1962 March 28) from Reynolds Price to Bennett and a 1951 8x10-inch gelatin silver photograph. The letter topics include Price's A Long and Happy Life, Bennett's lecture and travel to Chicago. The photograph is of Bennett and Price at Bennett's debut.

Benson-Thompson Family papers, 1803-1936 3 Linear Feet 864 Items

Recorded earlier as the Benson Family Papers. Includes materials from the related families of Elias Benson, physician, of Marion Co., Alabama, and John Ford Thompson, officer of the Alabama Militia. The families emigrated from Greenvilee and Spartanburg counties, S.C., to Alabama in the early 1800s. Personal correspondence and business papers of the Benson, Thompson, and Moore families who migrated from Greenville County and Spartanburg County, South Carolina, to Alabama. Correspondence between the groups in South Carolina and Alabama is concerned for the most part with family matters. However, political events are occasionally discussed, and a number of letters, 1836-1840, deal with the Alabama militia. The collection includes letters reflecting conditions in Alabama during the Civil War; several items on medical education at the University of Louisiana (Tulane University), 1866-1868; and records of the Marion (Alabama) Grange, No. 95, 1873-1876.

Sacvan Bercovitch papers, 1940-2011 36 Linear Feet 148 Megabytes

Collection contains research notes, manuscripts on paper and floppy diskettes, and correspondence relating to the serial Cambridge History of American Literature, of which Bercovitch is general editor. Research notes chiefly relate to Bercovitch's work on colonial American literature and religion, particularly on the Puritans in New England, and American humor. Also includes drafts with corrections of "A Cultural Model of Literary Studies," and "Literary Context," both by Bercovitch. Another set of files consists of writings by others, curriculum vitae, and more correspondence pertaining to the Cambridge serial. Some correspondence and articles date from the 1940s and 1950s and were written by Bryna Bercovitch in Yiddish; English translations included. There are also some research materials and correspondence concerning Yiddish literature. Part of the Jay B. Hubbell Center for Literary Historiography.

Jane L. Berdes papers, 1525-1993 79.5 Linear Feet 46,000 Items

The Jane L. Berdes Collection (1525-1993) has as its focal points the four Venetian welfare institutions known as the Ospedali Grandi and their role as providers of musical training for girls and women. The inclusive dates for the collection begin with the dates of primary materials Berdes collected and extend through her lifetime. The collection consists primarily of Berdes's research notes and materials on the Ospedali Grandi, and photocopies or microfilms of primary sources, including musical scores in manuscript and printed editions. It also contains correspondence, photographs, recordings and printed materials. Berdes identified the maestri of the Ospedali Grandi, the music performed, and the names of over 800 women who were members of the cori , but relatively little is known about them individually with the exception of Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen. In addition, the collection features general materials pertaining to other women in music throughout history. The user is advised that some photocopies are unattributed and, where Berdes did not indicate composer or author, no attempt has been made to provide one. The archive contains very few of Berdes's personal papers.

Rudolph Bergh papers, 1853-1907 110 items

Correspondence, certificates and manuscript notes, in Danish, French and German. Correspondents include Herman Lynge, F. Didrichsen, and Franz Leydig. Bergh received an appointment as correspondent member to the French Academy of Sciences in 1895 from M.P.E. Berthelot. Most of the material relates to his study of Nudibranchiata, a sub-order of marine gastropod mollusks.

Annie Besant was a British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator, and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule. Collection comprises two autograph, signed letters written by Annie Besant. The first, written 1882 May 20, originally accompanied a copy of a petition, and asked the editor of the Evening News to publish the petition, since he published an attack upon "Dr. E. Aveling, the Misses Bradlaugh" and herself, "as teachers of the Science School of the Hall of Science." The second, written 1883 December 4 to an unidentified addressee, indicated "the place of the meeting is the Grosvenor Gallery."

The collection consists of organizational records for Beth El Synagogue including records related to the synagogue's governance, general membership, the Beth El Sisterhood, the Beth El Preschool, synagogue buildings, and other topics. Materials include committee reports; financial reports; correspondence; printed material, including Books of Life, programs from services, newsletters, and other publications about Jewish history; documentation about the operations of Beth-El Preschool; legal papers; financial papers; photographs of the synagogue, congregation, and programs; and subject files documenting changes in the synagogue's constitutions, construction of new synagogue buildings in 1921 and 1957, dedication services, and the careers of rabbis.
