Newspaper clippings and letters (LS). Bethune worked in China in the late 1930's and the clippings document renewed interest in Bethune in early 1970's as relations improved between China and the West. Correspondence consists of inquiries regarding Bethune from R.J. Stewart to J.L. Wilson.

Helen S. Bevington was a poet and taught in the Dept. of English at Duke University from 1943-1976. The collection includes page and galley proofs and typescripts. It ranges in date from 1965-1976.

Mary Lillian Duke Biddle (1887-1960) was the only daughter of Sarah P. and Benjamin N. Duke and one of the heirs of the Duke family fortune. This collection documents her personal and family life in New York and Durham, NC as a wealthy socialite, philanthropist, and mother in the first half of the 20th century. She gave notable contributions to Duke University related to the Duke Homestead, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, and Duke University Libraries, and she established the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation in Durham to carry on this work after her death.

4 letters (ALS). Correspondence from Caspar Wistar, Robert Hare and Nathaniel Chapman. Wistar writes regarding quarantine regulations, that, on the one hand, they should prevent the introduction of contagious diseases and, on the other, should not be "burdensome to commerce". Includes transcription of Wistar letter.

Planter and merchant families of New Bern (Craven County), North Carolina. Business and personal correspondence of four generations of the Biddle and Simpson families of New Bern, N.C. Most notable are the papers of John Simpson (1728-1788), locally a prominent Revolutionary figure; his son, Samuel; and his great-grandson, Samuel Simpson Biddle (1811-1872). Topics include financial affairs, including deeds, property in Boston, and the shipment of goods; activities of the Baptist Church in the New Bern area; agricultural and business interests; education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and children's education in the 19th century. Many letters were written during the Civil War and revolve around the activities of S.S. Biddle, Jr. and James W. Biddle, containing brief descriptions of campaigns, troop movements, traitors, fortifications in South Carolina, camp life, and epidemics. The collection also has 12 volumes of plantation and personal accounts, bills, and receipts, loose deeds and notes, as well as information from the estates of Samuel Simpson and William Biddle.

Collection spans 1960s-2006 and includes proofs and tearsheets, correspondence, printed material, storyboards and other materials documenting Bien's career in advertising. Companies and products represented include Campho-Phenique, D-Con, Gerber, Helena Rubenstein, Karo, Mazola, Midol, Panasonic, Pepsi, Playtex, Seagram, and Timex. Acquired as part of the John W. Lucius A. Bigelow (1892-1973) served as a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Duke University from 1929 to 1961. Papers of Lucius A. Bigelow include correspondence, class examinations and procedures, research papers, research status reports, and photographs during his career as a professor of chemistry at Brown University and Duke University. Major subjects within the papers are fluorine chemistry, organic chemistry, chemistry education, and research conducted for the Manhattan Project, the Office of Naval Research, and the Army Research Office. Professional correspondents include H. S. Booth, Henry Gilman, and William A. Noyes. English.

Pre-Civil War letters refer to a mercantile firm in which the Biggs family had an interest. Two letters are from Cushing Biggs Hassell. Wartime correspondence in cludes letters, concentrated in 1864-1865, of two sons, Henry A. and William Biggs, describing service in the 17th North Carolina Regiment and Manley's Battery near Petersburg and Wilmington. There is no material in this collection concerning Biggs's political career. His letters to his wife are personal in nature. There is a brief diary begun by Biggs's daughter, possibly Lucy or Della, in 1854 during a visit to Washington, which largely records household duties and financial accounts.

Bill Communications, Inc., a subsidiary of Dutch publisher VNU Business Publications, is a business-to-business publisher and organizer of trade shows. Sales and Marketing Management is one of their main trade journals. The Bill Communications Sales and Marketing Management Vertical Files cover the years 1960-1994, with the bulk of the material dating 1975-1985. Topics include advertising, black middle class, finance, food industry, hiring, legal perspectives, management, marketing, media, packaging, product trends, real estate market, research, the Robinson-Patman Act, salesmen and salesmanship, research, telephone industry, training, women consumers, youth market and youth alcohol use, and zip codes. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Publishing, marketing research, business services, and seminar management company; name adopted in 1968. Founded originally as a publishing company in 1879; changed name to Bill Brothers Publications, Inc., in 1957. Collection comprises a file compiled by company president John W. Hartman, mainly regarding Harvard Business School's 10-year case study (1970s) of the company's development. In addition, there is an additional Harvard business case study, on Blackwood Press; as well as two copies of the Bill Communications newsletter TRADEWINDS (1959); and a reprinted article on marketing from the Harvard Business Review (1960).

Feminist and author. The Sallie Bingham Papers provide rich documentation of the personal life, literary development, and philanthropic activities of Sallie Bingham, feminist and writer. The papers, dated 1900-2011, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1940s to 2011, are comprised of correspondence, speeches, writings, subject files, personal papers, diaries and notebooks, legal and financial papers, audiovisual recordings, and photographic media. Included also are some records of The Kentucky Foundation for Women, a philanthropic organization founded by Bingham; The American Voice, a literary journal founded by Bingham and published under the auspices of The Kentucky Foundation for Women; and Santa Fe Stages, a regional theater founded by Bingham. Arranged into the following series: Audiovisual Materials, Correspondence, Diaries and Notebooks, Kentucky Foundation for Women, Legal and Financial, Miscellaneous, Photographs, Poetry, Santa Fe Stages, Speeches, Subject Files, Writings, and Oversize Material, with the Writings, Diaries and Notebooks, and Correspondence Series composing the bulk of the collection. Multiple additions have been added since the collection was processed; these are represented at the end of this finding aid.

Family papers documenting the Lefroy, Caperton, and Montague familes, representing the families in Sallie Bingham's matrilineal line. These materials belonged to Sallie Bingham's mother, Mary Caperton Bingham, until her death, when they went to Sallie; her sister, Eleanor Bingham Miller; and their niece, Emily Bingham. Two figures documented in these papers, Helena Lefroy Caperton and Sallie Montague Lefroy, are the focus, along with her mother, of Sallie Bingham's 2014 book, The Blue Box. Includes genealogies, letters, wills, a bill of sale, short stories and other writing, speeches, a prayer book, list, a few clippings, and Irish and English postcards.
