Areas of image have been hand-tinted with red; a blotch of red mars the center. Many abrasions on the emulsion; probably collodion POP process.

Group portrait of 37 African American students and two teachers, both women of color. Students in second row hold up a sign that reads: 4th Grade PM Roach St. School, Atlanta, Ga. Nov. 1896. Emulsion of photograph is heavily abraded and one small corner is broken off. Probably collodion printing-out paper process.

Printed on front: Phillips Studio / Post Office Building, Bath Beach, N.Y. Handwritten on front is an extensive inscription with signature, covering the face of the photograph in bold handwriting; it ends "With her Frenchies."

Image is of a cameo-like portrait of a woman's head. Caption on back of card reads: "1776 1876 / The Dreaming Iolanthe, King Rene's daughter from Henri Herz. A study in butter, by Caroline S. Brooks, daughter of Abel Shawk....sculptured on a kitchen table without a model, in a milk pan...and brought from Helena, Ark., a distance of 2000 miles, to the Centennial..." Printed on front lower edge: Entered according to Act of Congress, in the Office of Librarian, Washington, D.C.

Image is of a group of five older women in work dresses and aprons, apparently churning butter in a brick paved courtyard. Card is addressed to Miss Williams, Annestown, Tramore, which is a coastal town in southeast Ireland. The message reads: " 'My word,' if I catch you talking," followed by illegible initials.

No markings on item. The tin plate is sixth plate size, roughly cut and asymmetrical. The studio backdrop is a rudimentary cloth hanging with a faintly visible false window.

The women are wearing what were called "Zouave" uniforms; they were either showing their support for Civil War Union troops, probably from Maine, or they actually served in some capacity with a Union troop.

This studio portrait features a camera with a promotional banner for Mrs. Young, Photographer, and a woman who may or may not be Mrs. Young, whose dress, accessories, and hair are festooned with sample photographic portraits. Card mount is pink with gilt scalloped edges.
