Author, translator, and teacher Norman Waddell was born in Washington, D.C. in 1940, and he moved to Japan in 1965. He is an emeritus professor at Otani University in Kyoto, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Literature (LittD) and where he taught for more than thirty years. He has translated works by notable Zen figures such as Suzuki D.T. (Daisetz Teitarō), Dōgen Kigen, Bankei Yōtaku, and Hakuin Ekaku. Waddell's papers include correspondence from: Zen teacher Robert Aitken, who was a co-founder of the Diamond Sangha in Honolulu; artist Frederick Franck; and scholar and translator Burton Watson.

Norma Taylor Mitchell was an American History professor at Troy University in Alabama and a lay leader in the United Methodist Church. These materials document her research and teaching career, as well as her church leadership.

The North Carolina Association of Jewish Women (NCAJW) was founded by Sarah Weil in 1921 with the intent “to deepen the religious life, to stimulate interest and Jewish affairs, and to increase Jewish community activity.” The organization’s projects included administration of a scholarship fund, sponsorship of the NCA of Jewish Youth (founded in 1946), and help towards purchasing books of Jewish interest for the libraries of North Carolina. The materials in this collection primarily document the daily business activities of the NCAJW and include programs and reports from annual conventions and meetings, membership, correspondence to and from Yetta Leder (President and Membership Chair of the NCAJW), financial records such as balance sheets, budgets, and annual contributions, year books, and reports, correspondence, and photographs related to the organization’s various projects.

The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (NCAWA) was founded in 1978 to support women legal professionals and women's legal rights. Accession (2009-0209) (11.6 lin. ft.; 7100 items; dated 1978-2009) includes administrative and organizational records from the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys. Materials include membership directories, conference binders, surveys and other research about women in the profession, videotapes from annual conferences, committee and task force files, meeting minutes, articles of incorporation, photographs from events, and other related materials. Accession (2011-1018) (1.0 lin. ft.; 1000 items; dated 1998-2011) includes additional administrative and organizational records from the NCAWA. Materials include newsletters, membership directories, conference notebooks, continuing legal education (CLE) presentations, photographs, correspondence, and periodicals about legal matters. Accession (2013-189) (6.0 lin. ft.; 4500 items; dated 1978-2009) includes newsletters, brochures, membership directories, conference materials, and photographs of past presidents. The North Carolina Lesbian and Gay Health Project was founded in 1982. The records in this collection contain administrative files, case files, board minutes, and newsletters that document the organization, staffing, and activities of the NCLGHP. Subject files provide general information about gay and lesbian health issues, such as AIDS, breast cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, mental health, and substance abuse. Includes some artifacts and ephemeral materials such as T-shirts, pamphlets, and fliers.

The North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company was founded in Durham, N.C. in 1897, and was dissolved in 2022. Its archives document the company's founding and development, and contribute to the historic record on African American businesses and entrepreneurship in the South and in the United States. Dating from 1850 to 2008, the material covers nearly every aspect of N.C. Mutual's operations, management, and milestones. Includes corporate office files, including the records of five company presidents; annual statements; reports; surveys; memos; legal and financial papers; original life insurance policies; training material; programs; ephemera and artifacts; and a large number of historical photographs of male and female staff and their families, offices, buildings, and Durham scenes dating back to the late 1890s. Significant businessmen represented in the papers include founders John Merrick and Aaron Moore; and presidents Bert Collins, Joseph Goodloe, William Kennedy Jr., William Kennedy, III, Charles C. Spaulding, Asa T. Spaulding, and current president James H. Speed. Throughout there are numerous images and narratives about the many women workers and administrative staff who held positions at the company dating back to the turn of the 20th century. The collection is especially rich in print material, including many issues of three company publications: The Mutual (1903-1929), The Whetstone (1924-1998), and The Weekly Review (1925-1998). It is also notable for its assemblage of material on United States African American history, including much information on other companies, and public relations material dating from the earliest years to present times, including advertising ephemera, advertising campaigns, and other related items. Other materials document North Carolina Mutual's outreach to the African American community throughout its history to counter racism, unemployment, and diseases by means of public health programs, church affiliations, mentoring, and scholarship programs. Over one hundred selected digitized photographs and a few documents are also available online. Contains the records of the North Carolina Public Interest Research Group, a social and environmental action student group formed in 1972 at Duke University. Types of materials include correspondence, minutes, agendas, reports, notes, fliers, pamphlets, newsletters, handbooks and financial materials. Major subjects include Duke University, student political activity, student movements, political campaigns, consumer advocacy, Durham, N.C., lobbying, environmental protection in North Carolina, and the North Carolina Public Interest Research Group. Materials range in date from 1970 to 1983. English.

The North Carolina Self-Portrait Photography Collection includes copy negatives, contact sheets, prints, information sheets, agreements, and voice recordings created as part of the North Carolina Self-Portrait Project, undertaken to build an archive of images and other materials documenting the experiences of African American families in the South. The photographs were assembled by requesting copy photographs from African American families primarily in North Carolina, but a few locations in Mississippi were also included. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

The North Carolina Student Legislature, the oldest active student legislature in the United States, was established in 1937. Contains the records of the Duke University chapter of the North Carolina Student Legislature, a student organization that presented legislation for possible enactment by the North Carolina General Assembly.

The first Student Rural Health Coalition began at Vanderbilt University in 1968. In 1978, the Lyndhurst Foundation began funding similar work in North Carolina with the goal of improving the health conditions of eastern North Carolina, the state's most impoverished and medically underserved region. Collection contains records pertaining to the operations and activities of the Duke University Chapter of the North Carolina Student Rural Health Coalition with the inclusive dates 1988-2001. Material includes correspondence and memoranda, material relating to internships and cooperative programs with North Carolina Central University, staff work plans and evaluations, reports and surveys, and various printed material.

The North Carolina Temple and Synagogue Historical Collection is an artificial collection created from materials donated to the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina that are from or related to Jewish congregations across North Carolina. There are administrative records for some of the temples and synagogues represented, including Temple Beth El (Weldon, Halifax Co., NC), Temple Israel (Kinston, Lenoir Co., NC), Temple Beth El (Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC), and Temple Oheb Sholom (Goldsboro, Wayne Co., NC), of which Gertrude Weil was a member. Also present are materials related to Rabbi Jerome G. Tolochko's service as chaplain to Marine Corps bases in North Carolina during and after World War II. Central themes include congregational and community events, building dedications, anniversaries, religious services, membership, religious education, and Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Hadassah activities. Types of material include correspondence, bulletins, programs, organizational scrapbooks, directories, teaching materials, financial ledgers, clippings, and photographs.

North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence (NCARRV) was an activist group based in Durham, NC from 1983-1997 that worked to document hate crimes and hate groups including white supremacists, assist victims, raise awareness, and influence public policy across the state, and these records document their work. Collection includes founding documents, bylaws, meeting files, board meeting documents, photographs, audiovisual materials, administrative materials, grants and grant applications, incident reports, publications, subject and extensive newspaper clippings on racist violence and white supremacy movements in North Carolina.

North Carolinians Against the Death Penalty (NCADP) was a coalition founded in the 1960s that, after resuming activity in the 1980s, worked through the early 2000s to abolish capital punishment by lobbying for legislative action and advocating for stays of execution for prisoners on death row. Collection consists of organizational records, partnership files from related groups, chronological files, news clippings, and other related materials. The collection documents the coalition's activism from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, particularly the activities of NCADP leaders Geoffrey Mock and Gerda Stein, and its partnership with other organizations such as People of Faith Against the Death Penalty, Amnesty International, Carolina Justice Policy Center, the Center for Death Penalty Litigation, and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. The Northern Railroad was a U.S. railroad located in central New Hampshire. Collection contains stock certificates, payrolls, powers of attorney, bills of lading, papers of other railroads (especially of the Passumpsic and Northern New Hampshire Railroads), accounts, receipts, reports of merchandise, and a volume of letters from various railroad companies.

Account of life in camp and traveling while stationed in North India and modern-day Pakistan by an unidentified wife of a British Army officer. The first entry begins in Meean Meer (or Mian Mir), a former large British cantonment in Pakistan. Officers and families traveled to locations including Islamabad, Kashmir, Aliabad, and Pindi Gheb. The National Organization for Women (NOW) is a feminist activist organization founded in 1966. Collection comprises one product order form on newsprint, offering feminist and activist-themed items (books, buttons, t-shirts, jewelry, stickers, etc.) available for sale from the National Organization for Women office in Washington, D.C.

The Noyes and Balch families resided primarily in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Collection comprises correspondence, including 136 letters (603 pages); 3 diaries; a photograph album and loose photographs, as well as a wooden box in which the family stored letters from Catharine Porter Noyes. The collection centers around Catharine, who detailed her experiences while teaching newly freed slaves at plantations on the Sea Islands of South Carolina, from 1863-1864 and 1869-1870. There are also family letters written to Catharine, 1860-1892, especially from her sister, Ellen (Nellie); Ellen's husband, F. V. “Frank” Balch; and her cousin, Mary, who taught with Ellen in South Carolina, among others family members. Another set of letters were written by Ellen to Frank while he served as secretary to U. S. Senator and abolitionist Charles Sumner (R-Ma) in 1864 in Washington, D.C.; and by artist Emily E. Balch to Richard Noyes Stone. The collection also contains a diary maintained by a 12-year-old girl, probably Ravella Balch, and there are two diaries maintained by Emily E. Balch in 1929. There is a photograph album containing 32 black-and-white photographs of Noyes and Balch family members, as well as family friends. There are also loose black-and-white photographs, dated 1877-1957. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, and as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.
