The first Student Rural Health Coalition began at Vanderbilt University in 1968. In 1978, the Lyndhurst Foundation began funding similar work in North Carolina with the goal of improving the health conditions of eastern North Carolina, the state's most impoverished and medically underserved region. Collection contains records pertaining to the operations and activities of the Duke University Chapter of the North Carolina Student Rural Health Coalition with the inclusive dates 1988-2001. Material includes correspondence and memoranda, material relating to internships and cooperative programs with North Carolina Central University, staff work plans and evaluations, reports and surveys, and various printed material.

North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence (NCARRV) was an activist group based in Durham, NC from 1983-1997 that worked to document hate crimes and hate groups including white supremacists, assist victims, raise awareness, and influence public policy across the state, and these records document their work. Collection includes founding documents, bylaws, meeting files, board meeting documents, photographs, audiovisual materials, administrative materials, grants and grant applications, incident reports, publications, subject and extensive newspaper clippings on racist violence and white supremacy movements in North Carolina.

North Carolinians Against the Death Penalty (NCADP) was a coalition founded in the 1960s that, after resuming activity in the 1980s, worked through the early 2000s to abolish capital punishment by lobbying for legislative action and advocating for stays of execution for prisoners on death row. Collection consists of organizational records, partnership files from related groups, chronological files, news clippings, and other related materials. The collection documents the coalition's activism from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, particularly the activities of NCADP leaders Geoffrey Mock and Gerda Stein, and its partnership with other organizations such as People of Faith Against the Death Penalty, Amnesty International, Carolina Justice Policy Center, the Center for Death Penalty Litigation, and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. Manuscript pages from a proposed, but never published second and revised edition of North's book, "A treatise on a malignant epidemic, commonly called spotted fever". Available are photographs of the title page of North's own copy of the book, which bears marginal notes in his hand. Reader is referred to the article by Pleadwell, "A new view of Elisha North ... ", in Annals of medical history, 6 (1924). The manuscript and North's copy form the basis of this essay.

The Northern Railroad was a U.S. railroad located in central New Hampshire. Collection contains stock certificates, payrolls, powers of attorney, bills of lading, papers of other railroads (especially of the Passumpsic and Northern New Hampshire Railroads), accounts, receipts, reports of merchandise, and a volume of letters from various railroad companies.

Collection comprises an autograph letter from Marianne North to Dr. Jessop, dated May 22, requesting that Jessop provide details about the possible sale of manuscripts of her ancestor, Roger North.

Resident of Stockton and San Francisco, California. Collection consists of manuscript and typewritten letters, written primarily to Sylvia Norton from her family, dealing with their financial struggles during the Great Depression. Also contains manuscripts of poetry and short stories written by either Sylvia or Lillian Norton under the name (Frances) Elliott Norton. Correspondence with author and critic Laurence D'Orsay discusses Elliott Norton's writing abilities. There are also a few news clippings, legal documents, and some biographical materials. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Josiah Clark Nott was a surgeon, ethnologist, and enslaver with a medical practice in Mobile, Alabama. Collection consists of two letters and one note, written by Nott from Mobile. The 1839 letter speaks of payment for services and financial difficulties; the 1855 letter comments favorably on a work by Arthur de Gobineau on the theory of racial differences, published in French in the U.S. in 1855, which upheld the superiority of the "Aryan race" and thus promoted slavery as a just and moral system. Nott mentions in the 1855 letter that he had hired a "young friend" to help with the translation of Gobineau's work into English, which was published in 1856 in a much shortened and edited form. The undated note asks about the suitability of evening attire. Acquired as part of the Trent Collection, History of Medicine Collections at Duke University.

The Noyes and Balch families resided primarily in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Collection comprises correspondence, including 136 letters (603 pages); 3 diaries; a photograph album and loose photographs, as well as a wooden box in which the family stored letters from Catharine Porter Noyes. The collection centers around Catharine, who detailed her experiences while teaching newly freed slaves at plantations on the Sea Islands of South Carolina, from 1863-1864 and 1869-1870. There are also family letters written to Catharine, 1860-1892, especially from her sister, Ellen (Nellie); Ellen's husband, F. V. "Frank" Balch; and her cousin, Mary, who taught with Ellen in South Carolina, among others family members. Another set of letters were written by Ellen to Frank while he served as secretary to U. S. Senator and abolitionist Charles Sumner (R-Ma) in 1864 in Washington, D.C.; and by artist Emily E. Balch to Richard Noyes Stone. The collection also contains a diary maintained by a 12-year-old girl, probably Ravella Balch, and there are two diaries maintained by Emily E. Balch in 1929. There is a photograph album containing 32 black-and-white photographs of Noyes and Balch family members, as well as family friends. There are also loose black-and-white photographs, dated 1877-1957. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, and as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

The NSF/CEME Decentralization Conference seminars are funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and administered through the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). This collection includes materials relating to the planning and programming of the Decentralization Conferences during Roy Radner's tenure as coordinator.

Collection contains Ruth K. Nuermberger's correspondence, genealogical materials, travel diaries written during trips to Europe, various writings, printed materials and reprints of published articles, and other miscellanous papers, as well as notes for Nuermberger's book, Free Produce Movement, A Quaker Protest Against Slavery, Duke University Press, 1942. Some materials relate to Charles Osborn, a defrocked Quaker minister and early U.S. abolitionist. There are also many folders of notes for another publication, The Clays of Alabama, A Planter-Lawyer-Politician Family, University of Kentucky Press, 1958, which outlined the history of the Clay family and of Clement Comer Clay, governor of Alabama from 1835 to 1837.

Family from Ray's Hill, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Papers of John Nycum and John Q. Nycum include the letters of Philip Weisel concerning family matters and the sale of mineral water, and the correspondence and papers of several members of the Nycum family concerning the management of general merchandise businesses; business conditions; family matters; and the Civil War, including descriptions of camp life in Pennsylvania and Louisiana and the Confederate raid on Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, 1864. The collection also contains bills, receipts, legal papers, and miscellaneous items, including advertisements, circulars, political material, and reports, 1850-1856, of several teachers in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, listing pupils and their records. Volumes include mercantile daybooks and memorandum books of John Nycum, Simon Nycum, and Philip Weisel; record books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ray's Hill, Pennsylvania; account books of public schools of Bedford County; and a mercantile ledger of D. Eshleman and Company.

Henry Nathaniel Oakes was a minister from North Carolina; he received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1974. Collection consists of research material for and drafts of Oakes's Ph.D. dissertation, which focuses on the career of Robert Elijah Jones (1872—1960), the first African American elected to the episcopacy in the former Methodist Episcopal Church (1920). Oakes's materials document the relationship between Jones and his close friend Booker T. Washington, Jones's accomodationist approach to racial integration, as well as the black struggle for equality in the predominantly white Methodist Episcopal Church in the first half of the twentieth century. Among Oakes's research papers are many folders of typed notes excerpting and commenting on Jones's statements made from 1905 to 1920 on abolition, African American business, mob violence and lynching, education, and politics. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Appleton Oaksmith (1827 or 1828-1887) was a ship owner and captain, merchant, writer, and state representative for North Carolina. He was convicted in 1862 for allegedly outfitting ships to traffic in enslaved people but was later pardoned in 1872. Collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial documents, clippings, and bound volumes (mainly ledgers, logbooks, and scrapbooks) that document the personal life, interests, business ventures, naval voyages, and political and diplomatic career of Appleton Oaksmith. To a lesser extent the collection documents the lives and business of the Oaksmith and Mason families. The bulk of collection material dates from the mid- to late-1850s and the mid- to late-1870s. Notably absent from the collection is material related to Oaksmith's alleged trafficking in enslaved people and his indictment, conviction, and imprisonment for it.

Collection contains papers relating to Peru, roughly falling into three groups centering around commerce and industry, literary activities, and religious and social history. Includes papers (1786-1787) containing information on the mining of mercury; poems of Juan de Valle y Caviedes in 17th century script; poems by Antonio de Solís; one volume of Documentos históricos, collected by Manuel de Odriozola; three Documentos literarios from contemporary publications, among them a compilation of the papers of Peruvian viceroys and others (1580-1818); a paper relating to witchcraft and idolatry in Peru; papers (1772-1773) of the Provincial Council at Lima, containing the core of the debate within the Catholic Church on the modernization of learning which Charles III attempted to foist upon the empire; a copy of the proceso of Mariano Tupac Amaro; and material relating to politics and the industrial development of Peru and neighboring countries during the 19th century.

The Duke Forest is more than 7,000 acres of forested land in Durham, Orange, and Alamance counties, managed by Duke University for teaching and research. The Duke Forest records contain a wide variety of materials documenting research projects and forest management.
