This collection contains family, personal, literary, and business correspondence and other papers (chiefly 1830-1886) of Taveau, of his father, Louis Augustin Thomas Taveau, and of their family. The collection centers around Augustin Louis Taveau and relates to his education, activities as a poet, European travels (1852-1854), career in the Confederate Army, postwar condemnation of Confederate leaders, removal to Maryland (1866), and agricultural efforts. Other subjects include family and legal matters, social life and customs in South Carolina, the education of Southern girls, rice planting before the Civil War, planting in Mississippi and Louisiana (1850s), agriculture and scientific farming in Maryland, Charleston during the Civil War, postwar politics, and other matters. The Delta Upsilon Chapter of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity was established at Duke University in April 1952. It disbanded in 1981. Types of material include correspondence, minutes, reports, rosters, newsletters, printed material, and clippings. Major topics include student life at Duke University, housing arrangements for campus groups, and general management of a fraternal organization. The bulk of materials are from 1970-1976.

Sally Tatnall is a self-described radical feminist and community and political activist from Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Her work centers on lesbian rights, feminism, women's spirituality, reproductive health, anti-racism, and back-to-the-land projects. The collection includes personal materials such as journals, correspondence and photographs, as well as documentation of Tatnall's activism, and printed materials including 1970s sex education pamphlets.

Florence Tate (1931-2014) was a civil rights and pan-African activist based in Washington, DC. Involved in activism in support of Angolan independence, she later worked in support of the UNITA faction in the Angolan Civil War. In the United States, she worked as a press secretary for the first mayoral administration of Marion Barry and subsequently for the 1984 presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson.

Vincent Tarascio (1930-2020) was a professor emeritus of economics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This collection documents his professional life through his writings and professional and faculty activities. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

The Syria Ministry of Health is the government agency in Syria responsible for the health of the population, including raising awareness of health issues. The Syria Ministry of Health posters includes 14 posters related to COVID-19 dangers and prevention.

Elizabeth Symonds was born in 1796 and lived at Pengethley Manor in England. This collection includes 49 watercolor, gouache, and graphite paintings of Hummingbirds by Elizabeth Symonds. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Bound photograph album containing 48 photographs taken by Sir Percy Moleworth Sykes during his travels in a mountainous region of Central Asia, now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, with his sister, Ella Sykes. The gelatin silver prints measure approximately 4 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches and are window-mounted two to a page with calligraphic captions in white ink. Subjects include landscapes, strategic buildings such as forts and trading posts, and local Uighur, Beg, Kyrgyz, and Kazak people and their dwellings and animals, as well as British, Russian, Turkish, and Chinese people and officials. Specific locations in captions include Kashgar, the Tuman River, Yarkand, Khotan, Merkit, Bulunkul, the Pamirs, Tashkurgan, Muztagh Ata, Karakul lake, Tian Shan mountains, and Osh. The images are large, crisp, and rich with detail, offering views of a remote area and its culture during tensions in the decades following the Russo-Turkish War.

Holograph documents, signed. Swift's accounts against Jonathan Hufty (1778) and against Jacob Laughlin (1776-1779). On the reverse of each account, Justice of the Peace William Rush notes Swift's sworn testimony that accounts have not been paid (1782).

Condemns the essay appended to the second edition of the volume, "Cicalata sopra una ceria curiosa statuetta", as "tres impudique". Debbie Swanner is a radical feminist activist based in the Durham area and was a founding member of the Radical Feminist Organizing Committee (RFOC). The collection primarily documents Swanner's work with Brooke L. Williams and the Radical Feminist Organizing Committee (RFOC) in the 1980s and early 1990s. Collection contains organizational materials, RFOC publications, and correspondence between Swanner and other feminist activists. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture.

Andrej Svorenčik and Harro Maas organized the "Witness Seminar on Experimental Economics" at the Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. This collection documents the planning and execution of the event, and the subsequent publication of corresponding book, The Making of Experimental Economics: Witness Seminar on the Emergence of a Field. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Benjamin Sussman (1921-2003) was an advertising executive and founder of the Sussman, Jordan and Pollacheck advertising agency. He also worked for Petersen Publishing and as a freelance writer. Accession (2009-0238) consists of Sussman's original library of clippings on a wide variety of subjects, including a large section of vintage publications, that he used as inspiration and information in his work. The clippings include advertisements as well as articles, and are sorted by subject or topic using Sussman's own filing system. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The Superior Match Company was founded by Harold Meitus in 1932 in Chicago, Ill, and manufactured Union Label Advertising matchbooks. Collection comprises the company's matchbook advertising catalog no. 956 (192 pp., in binder), along with twenty sales representative's forms, including business and dealer identification cards, commission request forms, mailing labels, business reply and rush order envelopes, order pads, and a brief case order form. The order pads hold copies of a few orders placed in 1960 for businesses in Youngstown, Ohio.

La Roy Sunderland was a minister and abolitionist. Collection comprises one page with a clipped autograph for Sunderland, along with a ticket for his lecture "On Pathetism."

Lawrence Sumulong is a Filipino-American photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. Collection consists of 15 black-and-white oversize inkjet images printed on banana-fiber paper, documenting the lived experiences and memories of Marshallese and Bikinian survivors who were forced to leave their Pacific island homes because of the nuclear bomb tests carried out in the late 1940s by the U.S. military. The Marshallese and Bikinian diaspora explored in these photographs is based in Springdale, Arkansas. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Robert Summers (1922-2012) was a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. This collection consists of selected writings and personal items. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Portfolio consists of color and black-and-white sketches and graphic designs for print advertisements. Companies represented include the American Meat Institute, Green Giant, Hoover, Lumbermens Mutual, and Mimeograph (A.B. Dick). Acquired as part of the John W. Anite Arrow Summers (born 1925) is a Senior Research Fellow at the Sell-Lurie Real Estate Center and Professor Emerita of Public Policy and Management at the University of Pennsylvania. This collection primarily documents her professional life and family connections to other notable economists. It was acquired as part of the Economists' Papers Archive.

American author and Duke University alumnus. The William Styron Papers span the years 1855-2019, with the bulk of the papers being dated between 1943 and 1996. The collection consists of correspondence; writings by Styron and other authors; printed materials (including serials containing articles by and about Styron and his work as well as newspaper and magazine clippings); audiotapes, videotapes, and photographs; legal and financial papers; speeches and addresses; interviews; scrapbooks; and other material relating to Styron's personal life and his career as a writer. Extensive personal and professional correspondence between his family, friends, and fellow authors provides insight into his education at Duke University (particularly his studies with Professor William Blackburn of the Department of English) as well as his literary career and personal life.

Papers relate to the British naval hospital at Gibraltar and include weekly reports on the state of the hospital at Port Mahon, signed by John Gray, surgeon; list of gratuitous medicines, signed by Gray; account of lemons issued, signed by Gray; returns of the sick and wounded, signed by J. Gardiner, surgeon; reports on the state of the naval hospital at Gibraltar, signed by John Weir and Edward Vaughan; lists of hospital expenditures, and correspondence. Correspondents include St. Vincent, Captain Duckworth, Weir, Vaughan, R. Blair, W. Gibbons, J. Johnston, and Gilbert Blane, Henry Semple, from the French surgeons on the Luise Cherie, and printed material.

W. A. Stumpf was Professor of Education at Duke University from 1948 until his retirement in 1968. The collection contains surveys of high school seniors (circa 1955) from Durham, Guilford and Wake County high schools, in addition to a manuscript draft and mimeographed copies of papers relating to a 1950 civil rights case against Washington County (N.C.) schools. The material ranges in date from circa 1947-1955.

Studio Girl Cosmetics Records include promotional materials related to the multi-level marketing and direct sales cosmetics company. Collection includes leaflets and a pamphlet with beauty tips as well as sales team recruitment materials. Also contains an LP record with the voice of company Chairman Harry Taylor.

Students for Choice is a student organization dedicated to educating the Duke community about the status of reproductive rights nationally and locally and about available related resources, and to working to protect and uphold the freedom of choice. The Students for Choice Records contains flyers and other event materials, organizational notes, educational literature, and clippings.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) played a major role in the American Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s; its first major photography exhibit was titled "NOW" and opened in New York City in July 1965. Collection consists chiefly of 277 black-and-white photographs in sizes ranging from 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches to 16 x 20 inches, taken by SNCC photographers; a selection of these was used in the SNCC exhibit. Also included are paper records such as correspondence, fliers, brochures, and an exhibit layout diagram. Photographers whose work has been identified in the collection are: Joffré Clarke, Bob Fletcher, Danny Lyon, Fred DeVan, and Tamio Wakayama. The images were chiefly taken in Mississippi; other locations include Georgia, and possibly Alabama and Arkansas. Subjects center on conditions for African Americans in the South, voting rights campaigns, and civil rights marches and rallies; includes images of the 1964 Democratic National Convention, the Mississippi Freedom Party and its own Freedom Vote convention, the Selma-Montgomery March, and large rallies in Washington, D.C. Several images show burned-out buildings and cars, and harassed and bloodied demonstrators. People who have been identified in the photographs include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bob Moses, and Fannie Lou Hamer. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture at Duke University.

Collection comprises 5 black-and-white gelatin silver developing-out paper photographs taken by SNCC representatives from the Atlanta, Georgia, regional office. One photograph is uncredited, the others were photographed by Joffré T. Clarke, Bob Fletcher, and Tom Wakayama. They are undated, but probably were taken during the 1960s. Subjects in the images are all African-American, and include an elderly woman picking cotton, a young boy drawing with crayons, a little girl in a group watching others, a man slaughtering hogs, and a group building a house.

The SNCC 50th Anniversary Conference records are documents related to the convening of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) veterans, scholars, and community members to commemorate the organization's 50th anniversary in April 2010. The event took place at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Collection acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture.

Sixteen digital videocassette tapes documenting the 13 April 2000 conference, "We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest: Ella J. Baker ("Miss Baker") and the Birth of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee," held at Shaw University, in Raleigh, NC.

The records of the Durham, N.C. organization Student Action with Farmworkers comprise: administrative and event files; correspondence; reports, articles, and other publications; student project files; outreach and teaching materials; photographs, artwork, and scrapbooks; audio and video recordings; and materials related to labor organizing and protests across the U.S. Hundreds of student-led projects document through interviews, essays, photographs, videos, and other materials the lives of migrant farmworkers and their working conditions, mostly in NC and SC but also in VA, TN, and GA. Major themes in the collection include: history, working conditions, and abuses of migrant farmworkers in the U.S.; education and outreach efforts; housing, health, and pesticide safety; leadership development for migrant youth; grassroots theater; labor organizing and boycotts; and service learning. Materials are in English and Spanish. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

Document, signed. John Mitchell petitions the Hospital for admittance. The Hospital receives the promise of John Haighton, physician, to supply the patient with clean body linen weekly and to remove the body at his expense, if the patient should die within the Hospital's care.

Journalist and photographer. The Deena Stryker photographs collection contains photographs, negatives, and contact sheets generated by the journalist then known as Deena Boyer during two trips to Cuba between July 1963 and July 1964, as well as exhibit prints produced in 2010. During her second trip to the island, Stryker interviewed and photographed Fidel and Raúl Castro as well as other major figures in the Cuban Revolution such as Che Guevara and Vilma Espín. Topics and photographic subjects include key members of the revolutionary government at work and relaxing; and life in Havana and in rural Cuba, focusing on shops, street scenes, rallies, farms, development projects, and schools. There is a draft of the book prepared for publication in Italian by Stryker about her Cuba trips. Stryker's original negatives were processed in Cuba by Alberto Korda, Fidel Castro's personal photographer. All of Stryker's negatives have been digitized and are available online. Acquired by the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Strong Women Organizing Outrageous Projects (SWOOP) was a non-profit organization in Raleigh, NC that performed community service projects to help people and organizations in need of home repair and landscaping. The collection includes a series of photo albums and binders documenting SWOOP projects, as well as administrative materials. The binders include correspondence with partner organizations and SWOOP members as well as newsletters and notices about upcoming projects. Board meeting minutes, organizational efforts in the wake of Hurricane Fran, and publicity materials are also included in the collection.

Lithography company founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in about 1847. The Strobridge Lithographing Company Advertisements span the years 1910 through 1954, documenting much of the company's printed poster advertising work from that era. All images are black and white. The core of the collection, the Image Files Series, consists of around 1000 8x10 photographs ("A" images) of advertising designs, and a similar number of smaller printed cards (approx. 5x7 to 5x8, "B" images) of outdoor advertisement designs. The images are accompanied by three different Access Files to be used to browse the collection. These files are in the form of image photocopies ( "job tickets" ) and catalog cards. Most images are of poster (billboard or transit card) designs, but there are also some photographs of tabletop display advertising, window cards and other point-of-purchase displays. The collection documents advertising during a time when transportation was changing in America, and the automobile was gaining in popularity. Billboards began to replace smaller posters, accommodating a more mobile public. It was then that Strobridge turned from its emphasis on circus and theater posters (not represented in the collection) to billboard ads for mass-produced products. Many different products are featured, but perhaps the two most prominent and well-represented campaigns are those for Camel cigarettes and Palmolive soaps. The images form a valuable reference collection of advertising designs, relevant for researchers from a variety of disciplines including commercial artwork, advertising history and design, and popular culture. The collection documents outdoor advertising design during the first part of the twentieth century for what were mostly national brands. Numerous examples are from the era of hand-drawn and painted designs, often signed by artists including Norman Rockwell, Howard Scott, and Dr. Seuss (see his designs for the product Flit). Rarely, an artist is listed on the back of the image. Later designs from the 1940s and 1950s include photographic images, often peppered with celebrity likenesses including John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Charlton Heston. Many of the celebrity advertisements promoted tobacco products. Some designs are clearly war-era, such as advertisements depicting a 1943 female factory worker, or one from Schlitz (1942) mentioning war bonds.

Jane Stricklen (1927-) was an advertising executive and commercial artist based in Baltimore, Maryland, who served as Art Director for the VanSant Dugdale agency during the 1960s. The collection includes Soviet-era packaging, brochures, artifacts and memorabilia, along with materials and press coverage from the exhibition of these items curated by Stricklen at VanSant Dugdale. Materials include cigarette packages from Laika, Bogatyri, Pamir, Olen, Kazbek, and Drug brands; boxes and wrapping from Layla perfume and Detskii mir children's retailer (a subsidiary of AFK Sistema) Department Store; product brochures for the Berezka gift shop chain; and food and beverage brands, including Borjomi, Badamli, Mirgorodskaia, Sovetskoe shampanskoe, Zhigulevskoe, Moskovskoe, Donskoe, Krupskaya chocolates, and Chess. There are also materials relating to entertainment as well as literature for Rostsel'mash machinery; and travel materials from Intourist and Aeroflot. Acquired as part of the John W. Stephanie Strickland is a poet and born-digital writer whose works range from paper to interactive websites. She also teaches and serves on the board of the Electronic Literature Organization. Her papers include journals and anthologies featuring Strickland's poetry; TechnoPoetry Festival materials; schoolwork, college, and graduate papers; posters and programs from events; proofs and drafts of her writings; and audio recordings.

Mary Calvert Stribling (1870-1951) was a civic leader, of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Papers (chiefly 1920-1929) relating to Stribling's work as an officer of the West Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and as an official of the Red Cross in the Martinsburg, W. Va., area. Includes scattered business and family papers.

The Strange Fire Collective was a group of interdisciplinary artists, curators, and writers founded in 2015 to support the work of women, people of color, and queer and trans artists. The records of the collective comprise printed ephemera such as booklets, publicity postcards, gallery and exhibition guides, and printouts from their website posts, chiefly interviews with artists by the Strange Fire co-founders. Collection also includes a large set of over 100 single-sheet poster reproductions of artist works used in a 2019 exhibition at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD). Acquired by the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture and the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

St. Philip's Episcopal Church was founded in 1878 in Durham, N.C. This collections contains vestry minutes, correspondence, minutes from various organizations within the church, rector's notes, church bulletins and programs, slides, photographs, financial records, appointment books, scrapbooks, clippings, canvass reports, auditor's reports, sermons, and printed materials. Also included are the records, notes, and correspondence related to parish historian Harold Parker's history of the church (published in 1997), as well as a complete file of the church's extant sermons (1912-1994) Parker compiled for another book. There are also five reels of microfilm containing copies of vestry minutes, marriage records, a church register, etc., organized by Mr. Parker into roughly chronological order and divided into sections by rectorship.

Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe (1811 June 14-1896 July 1) was an American abolitionist and author. Collection comprises an introduction and a letter written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, along with a carte de visite of her. There is an undated introduction she wrote for the second edition of Narrative of Sojourner Truth. Stowe's statement appears as an introduction in some copies of the 1853 edition. In the introduction, Stowe discusses the African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist, remarking on her mental energy and revelatory powers as a Christian, and attests to Truth's character. She then mentions that the sales of the work will "secure a home for [Truth in] her old age ..." There is an undated letter Stowe wrote from Northampton Depot on Aug. 10 to Mr. Ward, informing him that although she is disposed to support his request, she is under pressures that limit her use of the pen. The carte de visite features a textured surface, and was created by the Howell studio in New York.
