Scope and content:

Materials in the collection relate to Collaborations in the Creative and the Sacred, Inc., an artistic and creative educational organization operating from 1980-1992. Collection includes records related to the annual summer conference, held by the group from 1981-1992. Included are planning materials, an outline of the proposed program, list of attendees, and post-conference communication for each of the 12 years that Collaborations existed. Also included are a historical overview of the group, the organization's bylaws (labelled "First Principles"), meeting minutes, and correspondence. Photographs depict Collaborations participants in a group portrait, dancing, painting, and in costume.

Biographical / historical:

Collaborations in the Creative and the Sacred, Inc., was founded in 1980 by Dorothy (Dot) Borden and a group of friends committed to a creative understanding of the sacred in human life and history. Many of the founding members were from the Duke Chapel, Duke Divinity School, and the Duke Dance Department and included Reynolds Price, Ella Fountain Pratt, and Nancy Rosebough. The group, composed both of artists and non-artists, organized a series of summer conferences at Black Mountain, NC from 1981-1992. Over time, these programs numbered a hundred participants, who would spend five days collaborating with one another in creative activities.

The Collections in the Creative and the Sacred, Inc. Records were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift in 2021.
