Scope and content:

The Hilliard Hardin Papers include materials related to her professional activity as mycologist and microbiologist. The collection contains her diplomas and professional certificates, curriculum vitae, newspaper clippings, and a few pieces of correspondence. A couple of photographs in the collection document the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan (including one photo of Warner Wells). Also included is the text of Hardin's talk on Norman Francis Conant, a pioneer of medical mycology.

Biographical / historical:

Hilliard Hardin (1917-1997) was an American microbiologist. She got her PhD from Duke in 1953. In 1949-1950, she was a part of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan. She worked as an instructor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Arkansas (1953-1957), research associate and instructor in the Department of Microbiology at Duke University Medical Center (1957-1963), chief of the Communicable Disease Center's mycology unit in Atlanta, GA (1963-1968), and associate professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Arkansas (1968-1991). She also served as director of microbiology at the Little Rock Division of the Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1988, she was named "Woman of the Year" by the Acropolis Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.

The Hilliard Hardin Papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from Barbara Procter Smith in 2020.
