Abstract:
Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. The Washington, D.C. office opened in 1944. Collection includes correspondence, press releases, project proposals and other printed materials that pertain to activities surrounding the American bicentennial celebration. Entities represented include the American Revolution Bicentennial Administration and the Washington Metropolitan Area Tranist Authority. Collection also includes an announcement of an internship aimed at minority applicants at Howard and other area schools. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. In 2023 the agency was absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML. The Washington, D.C. office opened in 1944.

Acquisition information:
The J. Walter Thompson Company. Washington Office records were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from the J. Walter Thompson Company in 1987.
