Abstract:
Holly Lynton is a Massachusetts-based documentary photographer and artist. Collection consists of 27 chromogenic prints from Lynton's Meeting Tonight project, which portrays contemporary (2017-2023) religious camp meetings in Dorchester County, South Carolina. The photographs depict people and social activities, labor, environment, and structures at the camp meetings. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of 27 chromogenic prints from Lynton's Meeting Tonight project, which portrays contemporary Methodist camp meetings held at historic campgrounds in Dorchester County, South Carolina. Four camp meetings are represented in this collection: Cypress (Ridgeville, S.C.), Indian Field (Saint George, S.C.), St. Paul (Harleyville, S.C.), and Shady Grove (Saint George, S.C.). The photographs depict social activities and labor at the camp meetings, such as children playing, people gathering, and people cooking, as well as portraits of individuals. Both Black people and white people feature in these photographs, with the majority of the subjects being Black people. The photographs also depict the environment and structures of the campgrounds, such as the tabernacle, tents, and historic cabins.

Biographical / historical:

Holly Lynton is a Massachusetts-based documentary photographer and artist. Lynton received a BA in psychology from Yale University (1994) and an MFA in Photography from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College (2000). Lynton has a multidisciplinary and research-based approach to her work that incorporates writing, historical research, and collaborative works in other media. Lynton states that her work explores "core aspects of humanity, filtered through local contexts" and the intersection of spirituality, labor, history, and the environment. She creates her photographs in rural American communities and focuses on the communities' agricultural history, current industry, and rituals.

Holly Lynton is a 2023 recipient of the Archive of Documentary Arts Collection Award for her project Meeting Tonight: Under the Brush Arbor. This project explores the legacy and current practice of religious camp meetings in Dorchester County, South Carolina. This project is ongoing.
