Biographical / historical:

Jane Stricklen (1927-) was an advertising executive and commercial artist based in Baltimore, who served as Art Director for the VanSant Dugdale agency during the 1960s.

Jane Stricklen participated in a government-sponsored tour of the Soviet Union in 1964 during her tenure as Art Director for Baltimore advertising agency, VanSant Dugdale. Stricklen along with some fellow travelers collected Soviet advertising ephemera, labels, packaging and graphic material, which Stricklen later organized into an exhibition for her colleagues at VanSant Dugdale. Striklen's exhibition, titled "Madison Avenue ... U.S.S.R.," framed Soviet advertising designs as decades behind their American counterparts due to the lack of private commercial competition in a state-run economy. The exhibition received some local and national press.
