Biographical / historical:

Duke University Retirees Outreach (DURO) was founded in 1997 by William Griffith and George Maddox with support from Nannerl Keohane and John Burness. DURO's objective was to create volunteer opportunities in Durham. Funded and supported by the Office of Communication Services, DURO began offering volunteer opportunities to Duke retirees and their partners and later expanded to include Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members, alumni, students, and community members.

DURO focused on volunteer programs at Lakewood Elementary School, a school in the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership. The Lakewood Garden project started in 2000 in partnership with South Eastern Efforts Developing Sustainable Spaces (SEEDS) and Lakewood Elementary. With this, DURO members helped to construct and maintain a garden at Lakewood. The Backpack Program was started around 2011 to supply weekend groceries to families at Lakewood. With the Library/Media Center, DURO members assisted in the school's library, provided tutoring, installed a signage system, proctored tests, and helped with book fairs and book donations. Members also helped in the office and computer class, aided with school beautification, and the health and wellness program at Lakewood. In addition to DURO and Lakewood projects, members took part in programs like Busy Street, Crayons to Calculators, and Preiss-Steele Place.

In 2021, DURO was discontinued as an organization and the OLLI agreed to take on volunteer recruitment in support of programs created by DURO.
