Scope and content:

This collection include correspondence, writings, and subject files relating to Goodwin's roles as Professor of Economics, Director of International Studies, Vice Provost and Director of International Programs, Vice Provost for Research, and Dean of the Graduate School. Also included are records of the Board of Trustees Executive Committee, the Academic Council, the Provost Group, numerous economic and economic history professional societies, and several philanthropic foundations, including the Ford Foundation.

Biographical / historical:

Craufurd David Wycliffe Goodwin (1934-2017) was a white Canadian-American academic economist and administrator who was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He earned a BA in economics and political science from McGill University in 1955 and a PhD in economics from Duke University in 1958. He taught at York University before coming to Duke University in 1962, where he would remain for the rest of his career. During his tenure, he held the roles of Assistant to the Provost (1962-1964), Secretary of the University (1963-1966), Assistant Provost (1964-1968), Vice Provost for International Studies (1968-1972), and Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School (1980-1987). From 1971-1976, he was also Program Officer in Charge of European and International Affairs at the Ford Foundation.

He specialized in the history of economic thought, in particular, the use of economics in public life. He was a founding member, past president, and distinguished fellow of the History of Economics Society, and a founding member of the History of Political Economy and the Center for the History of Political Economy. In 2001, he received the Howard D. Johnson Teaching Award for Excellence from Trinity College.

He was married to Nancy Goodwin, and in 1977, they moved to Montrose, a 19th century homestead in Hillsborough noted for its history, gardens, and their art collection.

Acquisition information:
The Craufurd D. W. Goodwin papers were received by the University Archives as gifts and transfers from Crauford and Nancy Goodwin between 1985-1995 and 2009-2019.
