Scope and content:

The collection includes materials related to the formation and work of the Diversity Working Group, including correspondence, minutes, memorandums, survey forms, flyers, and other materials. Topics covered include the planning and administration of diversity workshops for library staff; feedback and correspondence related to these workshops; the creation, completion, and results of a 2002 workplace assessment survey; the summer film festival; desired workplace behaviors; and other subjects.

Biographical / historical:

The charge of the Diversity Working Group (DWG) is to plan, facilitate, and conduct programs related to diversity within the Duke University Libraries (DUL). Additionally, the DWG is expected to liaise with the Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) and participate and/or collaborate in campus-wide diversity planning and activities, where appropriate. The DWG reports to the DUL Executive Group.

In 1998 the management council (a group of departmental managers in the Duke University Libraries) met with Ben Reese, then Assistant Vice President for Cross Cultural Relations in the Office for Institutional Equity (OIE) and convened a series of diversity workshops for library staff. The Diversity Workshop Planning Group organized the workshops and gathered feedback from attendees. Based on this feedback, the Diversity Working Group was created in 1999 to continue to promote diversity efforts in the Libraries. Ros Raeford of the Duke University Libraries Technical Services Department led the group, which developed a charge, created a list of desirable workplace behaviors, planned workplace assessment activities, and sponsored an annual summer film festival. In 2000, the team received the Diversity Award from the University's Office of Human Resources.

Acquisition information:
The Diversity Working Group Records were received by the Duke University Archives, David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library, as a transfer in 2008.
