Background

Scope and content:

The Men's Basketball Poster Collection is comprised of posters featuring the Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball Team. These posters typically depict the entire team posing for a photograph, sometimes with the team coach; several posters commemorate championship wins or the game results for the season, while a few feature only the Blue Devil or an illustration of some team members. Posters range in size from 12"x18" to 36"x48" with considerable individual variation in size. Posters collected by University Archives from a variety of sources are generally unsigned. Most posters donated by Jim Jarvis were autographed by the entire team and/or Coach Mike Krzyzewski and are mounted on foam core board.

Biographical / historical:

Basketball was first played at Trinity College in 1906, introduced by then-Athletic Director Wilbur Wade Card. Since then, men's basketball has been played each year at Trinity College and later Duke University, appearing in the NCAA Tournament dozens of times, winning the national championship four times (in 1991, 1992, 2001, and 2010).

Prior to 1980, team posters depicting the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team in uniform and listing the season's games were often created, as were special publicity and commemorative posters for tournaments, championships, and rivalry games. In 1980, Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) became head coach of the team, taking over for Bill Foster. Shortly after his arrival, Coach K's wife, Carol "Mickie" Krzyzewski, began a traditional of creating a thematic poster for each season's team. Mrs. Krzyzewski, and later their daughter Debbie Krzyzewski, collaborated with graphic designer Jim Jarvis and others (including photographer Chris Hildreth) to create a new poster every year, using a variety of themes and styles. Basketball team posters are usually produced at the start of a new basketball season, depicting the season's team player lineup and sometimes the game schedule.
