George Winfield was a resident of New Market, Virginia.
According to the a biographical sketch, Winfield was born in 1822. It should be noted that a John Quincy Whitfield was also born in Shenandoah County in 1822, and was Captain of Company B of the 7th regiment, Virginia Cavalry, which was part of Ashby's Cavalry. The author of the volume may be in fact John Q. Whitfield or his relative [online source: A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia, 1989, and Virginia Valley Records: Genealogical and Historical Materials of Rockingham, 2010, both by John Wayland].
