The William Henry Chafe Oral History Collection spans the years 1933 through 1988, with most of the materials dated between 1972 and 1978. The collection consists mainly of oral history interview tapes and transcripts, but also includes interview notes and research files related to Chafe's book Civilities and Civil Rights: Greensboro, North Carolina, and the Black Struggle for Freedom.

William Henry Glasson (1874-1946) was Professor of Political Economy and Social Science at Trinity College and Duke University and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. This collection primarily documents his professional life through his correspondence, writings, and research. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

The Hall family of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, were enslavers and owners of tobacco plantations. Collection includes three generations of the Hall family and documents their involvement with tobacco and other plantation operations in Maryland during the 18th and 19th centuries, including the shift to lumber and wheat after 1800. Also includes information on cotton plantations in South Carolina and the sale of cotton to England, Maryland politics and government in the 1780s, insurrections by enslaved people, and naval impressment at the time of the War of 1812.

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), was one of the earliest and most important American photographers. From 1869 to 1878 he was official photographer for the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories. Collection includes 130 photographs and albumen prints, almost all of which Jackson made while employed by the Survey. States represented are Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. Photographs are organized in several series by year from 1869 to 1874. Other important photographs include both a series and an album of the area now know as Yellowstone National Park; some of Jackson's photographs were shown to Congress prior to their vote to establish it as the first national park.

Clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Rockingham, North Carolina. Sermons and other papers, relating to Biblical exegesis and theology, church missions, religious education, divorce, the Republican Party and the McKinley Tariff of 1890, and Theodore Parker.

Three signed letters: William Hey, surgeon, writes to William Henry about calculi; Henry invites scientist Michael Faraday on request of the Committee of the Manchester Royal Institution to give a course of lectures on chemistry; Henry replies to Thomas Thompson's request for advice on how to dispose of the minerological collection of his brother-in-law, and mentions geologist William Buckland.

A group of letters spanning Welch's career, chiefly written to him, but including one early 1887 letter returning a revised manuscript to Dr. Canfield. One notable letter introducing Welch, then at Johns Hopdkins, to Congressman Robert Bremner, is signed by Woodrow Wilson from the White House in 1913. Includes many pieces of correspondence to and from Wilburt C. Davison of the Duke University School of Medicine, including a 1933 telegram to Welch on the occasion of the 2nd anniversary.

William Hesketh Lever was the First Viscount Leverhulme, and founder of the international firm, Lever Brothers. This bound photograph album belonging to Lord Leverhulme is entitled Solomon Islands Views, and contains 98 black-and-white photographs, chiefly measuring 6x8 inches, that illustrate the beginnings of the Lever Brothers Pacific plantations operations from about 1906-1910. Images include company buildings, plantations at various stages of development, local inhabitants and dwellings, other cultivated crops, flora and fauna, and steamships. Among the place names listed are Rendova, Pepesala and Guadalcanal. Notable persons found among the images include the Resident Commissioner of the Islands at the time, missionary J.F. Goldie, and various Lever officers.

Collector and scholar of medical and pharmaceutical advertising, and advertising Go Cards. Collection contains primarily advertising postcards (500 items, 1999-2000), mainly for clothing, entertainment, and alcoholic beverages, but also promoting AIDS awareness, AIDS drugs, and safe sex. The collection includes 5 handmade AIDS awareness cards from Burkina Faso; advertising cards for phone sex lines, 1978-1992; and 5 papers by Helfand on medical and pharmaceutical advertising. A copy of M. Rickard's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EPHEMERA was removed from the collection and cataloged separately. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.
