The London Office first opened in 1899. The British Marketing and Distributing Company Limited opened in 1936 as a subsidiary of J. Walter Thompson Company Ltd. Consists of two bound volumes: meeting minutes and a register of members/share ledger. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection contains examples of retail merchandising, sales displays, sales methods and methodology, and advertising advice guides issued by different businesses to promote their products or services. Items are printed or published flyers, leaflets, manuals, or other circulated literature acquired from a variety of sources and assembled by the library into this ephemera collection.

Solomon, Ambrose, and Socrates Henkel were prominent Lutherant churchmen active in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Correspondence (1812-1894), account books, and notes for sermons, articles and lectures, belonging to the Henkel family. The primary authors are Solomon and Ambrose Henkel, and their nephew, Socrates Henkel, prominent Lutheran churchmen. Includes information on the Lutheran Church in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, and on the publishing house Henkel Press, Inc., at New Market, Virginia. Some of the material is in German. The correspondence touches on many subjects, chiefly church matters, but there is a small group of Civil War letters from Henkel family members recounting battles (Fort Sumter; Mine Run, Va.), Union occupation, and camp life. One letter from 1860 mentions the hanging of an abolitionist. Also included is a diary begun in 1802, written by Paul Henkel, with a transcription; there are also miscellaneous writings, items relating to religious music, and advertisements.

Walter Thompson Company. Materials include promotional pamphlets, informational bulletins, regional market analyses, research reports, and industry overviews, as well as corporate annual reports, office directories and aggregate client lists. Materials are primarily in English, but several other languages are also represented.

The Hugh P. Connell Papers cover the years 1926-1986, with the bulk of materials dating from 1966-1986, roughly the period during which Connell served in an executive capacity for the J.
