Abstract Or Scope: Trinity Park School was established in 1898, under headmaster J.F. Bivins, to better prepare students for admission at Trinity College and other institutions. The school operated on the campus of Trinity College until 1922, when it was permanently closed. The Trinity Park School Collection includes bound volumes, print materials, the papers of headmaster F.S. Aldridge, photographs, and financial information. Annual Trinity Park School catalogs have been removed and cataloged separately.

Abstract Or Scope: In 1892, Dr. Stephen B. Weeks, a professor of history at Trinity College, organized the Trinity College Historical Society. The goals of the Society were to collect, arrange, and preserve written materials and artifacts illustrative of the history of North Carolina and the South, and to promote the study of Southern history through lectures and publications. The Society benefited from the strong leadership of two history professors, John Spencer Bassett and William Kenneth Boyd. They made wide appeals for donations of historical materials and maintained a museum to house these relics. The meetings of the Society, held several times each year, provided a forum at which students and faculty could read their research papers and discuss their ideas. The best of these papers were published, from 1897 to 1956, in the Historical Papers of the Trinity College Historical Society. The collection includes historical notes about Trinity College and the Society, correspondence, meeting announcements, administrative files, publications, speeches, and artifacts. Materials range in date from [1492?] to 1981. English.

Abstract Or Scope: In the early years of Trinity College, the President handled most financial affairs with assistance and guidance from the Board of Trustees. When the College moved to Durham in 1892, one of the trustees, Durham businessman Virginius Ballard, filled the post of College Treasurer and served until 1898. President John C. Kilgo took over the task until 1907. At that point, it appears that an office of Treasurer was formally established, as Dallas W. Newsom is listed in the Catalog as Treasurer. The collection includes ledgers and ledger sheets, cash books, journals, insurance policies, bonds, titles, leases, building and service contracts, correspondence, reports and other records, with bulk dates of 1910-1924. Records from 1891 concerning the Durham campus and buildings are also included.

Abstract Or Scope: Eugene and Margaret Triman both served in the United States military during World War II; Eugene was a sailor and was stationed on submarines, and Margaret was a member of the Women's Army Corps. The majority of this collection consists of Eugene's letters to Margaret while the couple was dating and engaged to marry. There are also five photographs of their wedding day, in April 1946, as well as some newspaper clippings about Margaret's WAC service and two booklets on birth control.

Abstract Or Scope: Cuban people emigrated to the United States as refugees in 1980 during the Mariel Boatlift. A small percentage of them were imprisoned in the U.S. on felony charges, which are cause for deportation under immigration law. After a 1987 prison riot where Cuban detainees protested deportation, the migrants were granted an indefinite moratorium on deportation and a fair review of their case. A decade later many were still in federal detention centers awaiting review of their case, and they often wrote to Amnesty International for help. Collection consists largely of unsolicited correspondence from Cuban migrants written to Sarah Town while she interned with Amnesty International's Refugee Office. Acquired as part of the Human Rights Archive at Duke University.

At least during the latter part of the Civil War William E. Tolbert had a desk job. In 1864 he was In Nashville, and by March, 1865, had been transferred to Newbern, N. C., where he was with the Chief Engineer's Office, of U. S. Military Railroad in the Division of the Miss. He wrote that many refugees had come into the town after Gen. Schofield moved farther into the state.

The letter is addressed to Robins at Rounton Grange, the North Yorkshire estate which was the family home of the writer Florence Bell ("Lady Bell"). Bell and Robins were close friends and collaborators. Thorndike refers to a play; at the time of this letter, she was in rehearsals for the 1922-23 London production of Shelley's The Cenci at the New Theater, directed by her husband, Lewis Casson. There are letters to Thompson from King George V (a thank you note, 1893), Empress Frederick of Germany (1891), and King Leopold II (1869, 1872, 1875, 1876, 1880). Abstract Or Scope: Collection contains the records of the firm of Terrasson Brothers, established in Philadelphia by Antoine and Barthelemy Terrasson as a branch of their father's firm, John Terrasson and Company, headquartered in Paris and Lyons, France. Early business letters reflect the trade of the firm in grain, the furnishings of supplies to the French and American armies, and the purchase of tobacco at various places throughout the South. The letters contain information on the American Revolution, especially on naval operations, and on post-Revolutionary business conditions. Papers after 1800 concern the family of Mark Prager, members of which apparently married into the Terrasson family. Prager was owner of a trading firm in Holland. These papers contain information on Prager's trading activities until 1820, and on the family of Harriet Prager of Philadelphia. The later letters contain references to family affairs, slavery, politics and sectionalism. Approximately 100 Civil War letters describe conditions in the North.

Abstract Or Scope: Walter J. Taylor was incarcerated at San Quentin and Folsom prisons from 1968 to 1973. While in jail, he founded the Sisters of Motivation and the Community Concern for Prisoners organizations to help African American convicts. He was also arrested, but never charged, as a suspect in the "Stinky Rapist" crimes in Berkeley, California, from 1973 to 1978. Collection consists largely of materials from Taylor's time in prison and as a community activist, post-prison, in Berkeley, California, during the 1970s. The majority of the materials comprises Taylor's incoming correspondence during his incarceration, which includes letters from a variety of people, especially women participating as pen pals in the Sisters of Motivation organization. Other frequent writers are Taylor's girlfriends, family members, and community organizations that he had contacted regarding his imprisonment and the general condition of black male prisoners. Post-prison materials consist largely of letters of recommendation and thanks relating to his job as a youth counselor; creative writings and poems about black culture and beauty; business flyers for his music store; and Community Concern for Prisoners materials. Collection also includes several folders of news clippings, most of which relate to Taylor being the prime suspect for the "Stinky Rapist" crimes in Berkeley from 1973 to 1978. Abstract Or Scope: This collection contains a variety of items including variant manuscripts of the 79 poems included in Harry Paul Taylor's book, IMAGERY IN POETRY. There are notes of ideas he incorporated into the poems, revisions, and some layout instruction. One folder contains a brief biographical sketch and a review in which Taylor explains how his poetry is written, what his poetical theories are, and what he hopes to accomplish. There are other poems, letters from Dr. Jay B. Hubbell to Taylor; and other correspondence and clippings concerning Allan Halladay and Gustave Whitehead. There is also an autographed copy of a book about Whitehead, HISTORY BY CONTRACT: BEGINNING OF MOTORIZED AVIATION by William J. O'Dwyer and Stella Randolph. There are three versions of SPACE AGE POETRY and a number of other poems on miscellaneous subjects. Included also is the volume A LIFE SCENARIO WITH ARTIST ANTONIO CIRINO by Charles Movalli, poetized by Taylor; and typescript copies of "The Lady of Liberty." This collection is a part of the Jay B.
